I find his approach incredibly refreshing. Love the bright bridge. Not too crazy about the tapered nacelles but there is an escape valve - TT. Things could eventually change for the better while some things will stay the same. He's doing something without being locked into it which I think is very clever and gives him alot of freedom and wiggling room. He's not trapped by his designs. I don't think the story will be that great, I hope I'm wrong and I probably am, but at least the universe seems somewhat intact and I think we'll be all happy with and alternate origin story knowing that it could always change. I've always dreamed of creative risk taking direction since TNG started. We haven't really seen this universe in a long time. Even though it is different, it will still be comforting.

All I know at this point is that I'm looking forward to watching this movie.

I like that it looks like a different approach to Trek overall with fresh faces behind and in front of the camera, I don't care about deviations from canon and frankly it's the first time in many many years it feels like Trek is getting a real movie and not some extended tv episode.

In any case, there are things I like about J.J's Trek, there are a things I don't like.
I reserve final judgment until I see the movie and how it will do worldwide before I know if J.J "fixed" Trek.

As for dooming it, I don't think that even if the movie fails Trek will be in worse position than it was before this movie.
There's only going up when you're already at the bottom of the barrel.

JJ Abrams and his cohorts have doomed Star Trek and have raped our childhoods in the process.

And before anyone even thinks of arguing with me, Article 218 of the Grand Internet Charter allows any Fanboy the right to bitch and moan and declare their chidhood raped when faced with unpleasant changes to the franchise with which they have devoted their lives to. So while you may not agree with my opinion, you can not deny me the right to express it.

It's the zero, isn't it?

When i first heard about ST: XI i was dismayed, however after having read J.J's reasurring interview in Empire about ST: XI i am quite looking forward to it. i dont believe he has 'fixed' star trek, because star trek didnt need 'fixing' in the first place, in my oppinion. =]

The zero did destroy the sanctity of logical registry numbers.

Once I've convinced the BBC to let me borrow the TARDIS for a few hours, I'll get back to you.

I think he opened the doors to a new trek universe but only people with verifyable story ideas and music should work on the next movie with J.J. directing of course. I hope it'll remind us what TOS could have done on the big screen and not come off as a fantasy like Star Wars. It's seems to be more like an introduction to a new universe like the first X-men movie did. Nostalgia will rule this one.

I don't know how anyone can say conclusively one way or the other until they've actually seen the movie.

I also guess it depends on what your definition of "doom" is. If Trek XI is a flop, the property may go ignored (at least as far as major films & TV projects go) for the next decade. But it won't kill it forever.

Nonono. You're talking about Article 0218. Article 218 is the one about crossover fanfiction.
