Did J.J. fix Star Trek or doom it?

It's hard to say whenever abrams has saved or destroyed it,no one will know, nor even the suits at paramount ot abrams himself, everyone will have to wait until they have seen the moviethen they can decide then.

After giving the question a good deal of serious thought, I've concluded that my reaction to the movie will primarily depend on how much handheld camera is used. I am unable to enjoy (or even watch for more than 30 seconds) TV shows that rely on shakycam, even shows whose writing is routinely praised. (I haven't seen Mission Impossible III or any TV episodes directed by Abrams, but I wouldn't be surprised if they featured lots of shakycam.)

As for the writing and acting, the geometry of the port-side emergency hatch, etc., I'm not worried. I know that any adaptation can be radically different yet still have much to recommend it. (For example, Nabokov's Lolita and Kubrick's Lolita have very different flavors but are both very satisfying works of art. Abrams may not be a Kubrick - but not even Kubrick could be Kubrick very often; only 5 films during 1969-99.)

I think his greatest contribution will be creating box office for Paramount . . . that is, the film will make some money. But I don't think he will succeed on other levels, such as suddenly creating millions of new fans or making Star Trek mainstream. It will succeed because as a big budget event picture released at the beginning of summer, it will draw enough of the movie-going public to be called a hit. I don't expect a sudden revival of all things Star Trek as the result, though going with Abrams, who has TV experience, might generate interest in some sort of Star Trek series.

Well all I'm saying and why I started this thread is that if it is a hit, we will be stuck with whatever it is forever. The good with the bad. I'm just hoping he built in a defense or a survival mechanism to counteract that if it is necessary - a plan B. I think they did. but even that detracts from it to their own disadvantage I think. It's a double edged sword.

All I know at this point is that I'm looking forward to watching this movie.

Same here.

Trek was well and truly fucked until they handed Abrams the keys. He can't "doom" it any worse than it was when he took possession.

That much is true. VOY, at least three of the four TNG movies and ENT especially well and truly fucked Trek so badly it can barely walk--indeed, I'd say they left Trek for dead in a ditch by the side of a road. Abrams Trek can't be any worse. What I've seen, heard and read, however, makes me doubt it will be any better--better produced, certainly, but no better in any way that matters. (Hell, Transformers is "better" than The Man Who Fell to Earth from a lavishness-of-production standpoint; I'd rather not associate with anyone who would argue it's a better film.)

O.k., here's my point. We're stuck with them riding TOS' coattails forever until they bleed the last drop of money out of it as a commercial success like it or not. Now there's nothing wrong with that if it's good..

No and yes - at least, to the extent that stuff like "Star Wars" is mainstream. Mind you, when Triumph the insult dog can get a bit out of harassing SW fans at the cinema there's clearly an aroma of nerd clinging even to that money factory.

DS9 didn't do it any favors in the public mind either - people stopped watching that in droves.

I loved it when Spock walked past the line flipping them all off.

I wonder if success will be harder to take than it's doom.

Of course it will be.

So many want it to fail, it'll just kill em when it doesn't.

"Star Trek fans" they call themselves...

It'll be a moot point whether we think it is truly Star Trek anymore. It'll be a J.J mobile. A mediocre success will just mean more of the same mediocrity forever..

Nothing we say or do is gonna make a difference or matter or change anything ever. J.J is gonna ride this baby for the rest of his life if he can make a prifit. He's gonna be a spoiled brat about it too.

On what are you basing that opinion? A glancing check of IMDb shows that Abrams currently has two unrelated film projects on his slate in addition to a tv-movie and two ongoing television series. Star Trek needs him a hell of a lot more than he needs Star Trek.

One need not be a fan of this movie to be a Star Trek fan, and this movie is unlikely to convert audiences into fans of existing Trek.

I really can't say. The trailer was too short and left many questions unanswered.

Unless...

Do they plan on making a movie out of that trailer??

If so, then I'd have to see hypothetical movie and then know if he did a good thing or a bad thing.

No one needs to be a fan. It's the wishing or hoping of it to fail that
stuns me coming from supposed fans of the franchise.

Really? On what do you base that? I think it will. Casino Royale made me
a fan of 007 and so I gave the previous films a chance and found I liked some them.

Already many friends of mine just seeing the trailer have expressed interest
in seeing some of my DVDs because the new film makes Trek look cool, so
they take interest. Besides it's not about making new fans of old Trek.
It's about making new fans of Trek in general, whether they end up watching
old Trek or not, they'll be the future of the franchise and the reason it
continues.

Easy. If the is good he fixed it, if the movie sucks, he doomed it.

I find his approach incredibly refreshing. Love the bright bridge. Not too crazy about the tapered nacelles but there is an escape valve - TT. Things could eventually change for the better while some things will stay the same. He's doing something without being locked into it which I think is very clever and gives him alot of freedom and wiggling room. He's not trapped by his designs. I don't think the story will be that great, I hope I'm wrong and I probably am, but at least the universe seems somewhat intact and I think we'll be all happy with and alternate origin story knowing that it could always change. I've always dreamed of creative risk taking direction since TNG started. We haven't really seen this universe in a long time. Even though it is different, it will still be comforting.

Watch the movie.

These are the same questions that fans were asking when they first heard about Star Trek: The Next Generation. Will it kill the franchise or destroy it? How can they make Star Trek without Kirk, Spock, et al? The Enterprise looks different...sacrilege!

TNG started out sucking, got good near the middle, and ended up sucking again. Ditto the movie series. Maybe JJ's version will do the same. In that event, in about 6 years we should have a really kick-ass Trek movie!
