Will Riker or Thomas Riker?

I'm very fond of Thomas, actually. I think he's an interesting character. When we first meet him he's got an appealing vulnerability and a not-so appealing woe-is-me attitude. Later when we see him on DS9, he's charming, charismatic and hardened. I like all these contradictions. I wish we saw more of Tom, or that we get to see him again. I'd like to see Riker when he's been under duress for a while. Will Riker is a priviliged man living a priviliged life. Who knows what kind of cracks will begin to show. Or not, as the case may be.

Agreed. Tom Riker was an underutilized character that was a goldmine untapped potential. Another one of those loose threads that made TNG so intriguing.

Of course, what we all have to keep in mind is that Tom isn't just Will's "brother," he's a transporter duplicate -- exactly what Will would've turned into had he been trapped on that planet for eight years. I think it's that snapshot quality that unnerved Will -- esp. in the ardent way Tom pursued Deanna.

Also notice that as soon as he could get his career jump-started again by transferring to the Ghandi, he abandoned Deanna again, just as Will did. And it's interesting to note that our Will would have also joined the Maquis, if his life mirrored Tom's.

Not killing off Will and replacing him with Tom was a missed opportunity. Tom might've stayed on Enterprise and continued to woo Deanna. I guess he would've become operations officer and Data would've become first officer.

I agree. I really felt like they were two separate people. Frakes and the writers really had a handle on the character of Riker. I find it interesting that Riker's character (like a few on TNG I think you could argue) had been neglected by that stage in the run. However, when Tom arrived and was so different to Will, it kind of proved that Will had been well fleshed out an had a recognizeable back story because Tom was so different.

It's interesting. We actually did see a somewhat 'cracked' Will from a different universe in 'Parallels.'

I'd forgotten about him! There are also cracks in Frame of Mind. Actually, he does crack and turn the phaser on himself at one point. He was willing, or driven, to kill himself in that episode.

My initial reply to you about Thomas was quite short, given that I am so fond of him and that I could probably write an essay about him and why I like him so much. Maybe one day I'll do that. Had you caught me on an evening when I wasn't heading out the door again and in a more expansive mood, I might have done that.

She is actually alive, and a hostage of Professor Moriarty. Even though it was late in the series, I do wish that TPTB did kill off Will Riker and kept Tom Riker at the end of "Second Chances," something that was briefly discussed in the writer's room. It would've revitalized a character who became stagnant after BOBW, part II.

After the Dominion war, what do you supposed happened to Thomas Riker, assuming he survived the Dominion plan to destroy all Cardassa. This is one those questions that you really can't answer, because we just don't know if he even survived?? Any Thoughts??

Is there a Voyager episode where they hear that all the Maquis prisoners being held by the Dominion/Cardassians have been killed? I hope that Tom survivied the massacre. I'm not sure what he would have been up to afterwards if he had survived, though. I know he's mentioned in a few novels. The snippets I've heard, though, don't really seem to interest me to read them. I know in one novel I've read (imzadi 2, maybe?) he hooks up with Sela, which is interesting but streches my credibility, I'm afraid.

^No. "Hunters" suggests that the Maquis have been effectively wiped by the Jem'Hadar but DS9's "Blaze of Glory" covers this anyway. However, nothing is said about prisoners.
