The...ship

What was your favorite 'beauty' shot of the Enterprise on TOS..and then in the movies, even including the "A"....

My favorite comes from TMP..right after the ship has left space dock and it is shown orbiting earth just as the sun rises in the distance...great shot!!!

Another I like, from the movies, is when the Enterprise passes over head and then we see it heading toward the Mutura Nebula..

As for TOS? Since most of it was stock footage, it pretty much all runs together. But I like the typical orbiting shot, but from the right hand rear angle just as it passes by...

TMP was, by far, the best movie for imaging the Enterprise. There are a lot of "beauty shots", most memorable being Scotty's flyby for Kirk before boarding. The only other time that magic was captured was at the end of STIV when they crew comes upon 1701A.

Really wish they would have done the same for the launching of Ent-B, and for ENT-D in Generations; would have been a nice contrast. ENT-E has never been given a decent beauty flyby either.

That's probably mine, too. I especially like the Remastered version of that shot too. I don't know what it is, the ship seems to be bigger, faster, more graceful and demand more respect all at the same time.

Though, there is a lot to be said for the 'wobble' the model had - not perfect, but it has a certain je ne sais quoi ;)

I was hugely disappointed by the ordinariness of the first shot of Ent-D in Generations. Seen from behind and only getting halfway into the frame before they cut away. It was this sort of lazy directing that made the film seem more like a bog-standard TV episode that just happened to be on the big screen than an actual movie.
In contrast I loved the first shot of the Ent-E as she came out of the nebula in FC.

Oddly, I think that first fly-by in FC showed the E-E from some of the worst angles and has a weird motion to it (I suppose some of that must've been due to still using a model at that point). I just didn't find it flattering at all, and it left me with a sour first impression.

Fortunately the shots improved a bit as FC progressed: http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/firstcontact/ch8/firstcontact0371.jpg

On TOS I really like the flyby where the secondary hull comes right into camera, the ship seems huge the way the saucer overflows the camera view.

I also like the close in shot of dish and nacelle caps as the ship seems to pivot, which was done later on (lots of 3rd season eps use it, don't know if it was in 2nd or not.)

TMP is more a matter of finding shots that are NOT good (there are a few, like looking down at the dish in dock) rather than ones that are great (there are tons of great ones.)

The nebula battle in TWOK where Enterprise rises up behidn the Reliant. The ship has "emotion" in that scene, a feeling of "Okay bitch, now I'm going to knock your teeth out!"

I'll second the drydock reveal in TMP. That's a "Everyone, shut the fuck up" moment in the house when that's scene's playing.

There were a bunch of shots in TMP that included the Enterprise that I hated for the way she was featured. Any shot of V'Ger with a tiny, tiny, Enterprise flying along her made V'Ger look awesome but made ol' 1701 look like a damn toy.

But no, any shot that was primarily of the Enterprise was pretty awesome.

I was always partial to this angle from the original series:

That's a classic angle.

I'm also fond of the 3/4 ventral perspective taken off the starboard bow that was used in a lot of stock "firing phasers" shots in the original fx work.

Another great angle is the "orbiting" angle where she passes perpendicular to the PoV with just a slight roll to port right at the point where she's full length framed in the scene.

In the movies, the "daybreak" orbit scene in TMP is a favorite. I also like the "spiraling down" and "rising up" scenes in TWOK.

The shot in TSfS that makes me tear up is the one right as she's entering Spacedock showing us the horrible wounds gouged into her starboard side. "Approaching Genesis" is another good angle.

ST IV's "We've come home" reaveal and subsequent departure are also big favorites of mine.

I love the sequence at the fade in of act one in Return of the Archons. Such a nice, long sequence of shots of the old girl.

Aside from that, the angle of the Enterprise at the very started of Let That Be Your Last Battlefield.

all original BTW, not the TOS-R versions. :-)

I can't recall any from TOS that stand out (though that shot posted with K7 looks quite nice) though in the movies, I quite liked the shot in Final Frontier - I think when Kirk's making his way onto the ship - where you see it from behind at a low angle.

Of course most of the shots of the ship in TMP were great, as for TOS I guess there aren't many bad shots either, the 1701 is just nice to look at from all angles. :)

This was a great shot...

I also liked a similiar one in Space Seed...
