What is Nero's beef with Kirk?

Romulans are calculators so a story like this suits them... Klingon's just arn't into backdoor plots, they're a face to face, in your face type of people.

Personally I've seen enough of these ... 'let's go back to the past and change things' story lines...but one more won't hurt.

Nero probably caught Kirk with his woman. I mean, you have to figure that Kirk's womanizing would catch up with him someday :p

Nero's beef is due to the fact that Vulcan and Romulus are very close to reunification. Nero is a rogue faction of romulus who beleives that this reunification will destroy the romulans, and is not acting on behalf of the romulan government. As Spock (from that TNG ep) is pretty much directly responsible for reunification Nero has it in for him. By killing Kirk as well he has killed the man responsible for alot of the recent political history of the federation. Nero believes that by killing kirk, romulans would become the supreme power of the Alpha quadrant. One of Neros aids early on in the movie asks why they do not attack Archer instead, Nero says that Archer was responsible for a lot of the militarization of Romulus before during and after the Romulan war, and would change Romulan history too much.

Already seen the movie, eh?

Most likely not, but you have to admit that for a theory, it's not too shabby.

Honestly, I'm sort of happy the Klingons aren't the antagonists in this movie. It's been done WAY too often already (STIII, STV, STVI, ST:G), and no offense to Klingon fans, but I don't think they'd be inclined to come up with such an elaborate plan to tear apart the Federation.

Not knowing anything more about the movie than the rest of us, I'm merely speculating here, but I don't think Nero has a beef with Kirk in particular. I think it can be said with confidence that Kirk and Spock are extremely significant figures in Federation "history". Their actions throughout their careers have had a great influence on the evolution of Starfleet and the UFP. Take them out of the equation, and there's no way the UFP can grow into what we've seen it become.

Is it extreme? Sure it is, but I'm betting Nero's probably not playing with a full deck when it comes to rational decisions anyway, so if it works, go with it.

Presumably, without Kirk, V'Ger and/or the Cetacean Probe (two probably well-known historical events even among some 24th-century Romulans) destroy Earth. Nero need not destroy Earth itself when he can just kill the guy who saved it so many times.

Plus, there are these two other things that Nero might want to stop by killing Kirk:

1)Prevent Kirk's destruction of the Bird Of Prey in Balance of Terror (maybe)

2) Stop Kirk's theft of the cloaking device in 'The Enterprise Incident'.

Don't forget about Kirk's part in the Khitomer Accords, which changed the balance of power in the Galaxy against the Romulans.

However, as I said before, I suspect there is NO REASON for Nero to specifically want to kill Kirk. I still think Kirk's father/parents were just unrelated collateral damage of some greater scheme of Nero's.

Assuming the plot rumor about Nero killing Kirk's parents (or at least his father) is correct, how do we know that these specific deaths were premeditation on Nero's part? Perhaps George Kirk's death is just the "collateral damage" of some otherwise unconnected scheme of Nero.

That's my take. I'm hoping that Nero is somewhere between reckless and psychotic, and he's just running around fucking shit up because he can. Sort of like Doomsday in the Superman comics (before they overexplained and ruined his origin).

It just makes no sense for him to go all the way back to Kirk's time and try to eliminate him. Even if he is somehow pissed about something Kirk has done, eliminating Kirk would have so many unpredictable effects by Nero's time, that no reasonable man would try it.

There could be an emotional connection to Kirk, like with Khan, but Nero seems too remote from Kirk, time-wise.

So, I hope he's just reckless, like Lobo, or just plain old frakkin' crazy.

Kind of like a certain Reman/Human fusion from a certain movie that everybody hates, even though this guy and Nero are the same kind of bad guy. How come Nero is better than the other guy (Hint: the other guy is from this movie.)

Well, one of the problems with the villian in "Nemesis" is that he had too many motivations (which often conflicted with each other), and none of them were very convincing.

When Nero was a kid, something bad happened to his family. He called 911, but the first cop on the scene -- TJ Hooker -- screwed up and Nero's parents died. The Romulans tried to sue, but ace lawyer Denny Crane won for the state.

Nero (with a full head of hair) had just successfully finished an experiment creating a crude protoplasm. Shortly thereafter, Nero knocked over a chemical flask and set his lab on fire. Kirk happened by, and helped put the fire out. Unknowingly, some of the chemicals had combined and the gas fumes made Nero's hair fall out.

KIRK: "And the fumes made your hair fall out! What a tragedy! I - I'm... sorry..."

NERO: "Will being sorry bring back my hair?"

NERO: "You were afraid my genius would make me more famous than you!"

And Nero has hated Kirk ever since.

kirk stole and wrecked his car

yeah, those romulans love their vettes!
Nero's beef is with the Vulcans since he wants to destroy their planet and if he is half Vulcan or Spock's son which is very likely, his own anscestry. I hope it is not just personal revenge. That would really suck. Nemisis and wraith of Khan in one movie. So what is Nero's motivation is a better question.

Nero might be one of those guys with a 'beef' with everyone. He hates the klingons for enslaving him.

Maybe he hates the Romulan and Vulcan governments for getting together or something.

And he hates Earth because, well, who doesn't hate Earth?

Or maybe he's just a really really obsessive fanboy who goes back in time to hang with Kirk & Spock. Then, when Kirk and Spock don't want to be his BFF, he goes all psycho on them and tries to rewrite history so they will HAVE to be his BFF. He does this by trying to kill eveyone in the universe except himself, Kirk and Spock.

So really, Nero is just a really obsessive fanboy trying to live out his fan-fic dreams.
