Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Books

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

I'm always amazed in these catalogues by how much of Pocket's library seems to be devoted towards love/lust stories for women.

But with a supernatural twist! I guess it's no longer sufficient to be swept off your feet by a ruggedly handsome roguish gentleman, he also needs a deep dark secret that only a woman's love can soothe.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

That's not surprising. Romance literature has always been hugely popular. Look at the bookshelves in a supermarket and you'll see maybe a half-dozen SF/fantasy titles at most, but whole shelves full of romance titles. I know a used-book store where SF/fantasy fills the back wall of the store but romance takes up nearly half the store overall.

^Chris, sometimes it seems no matter what a person remarks, you've always got a comment about why it's really not so remarkable at all. It really becomes quite irritating to feel the need to justify every little offhand comment made.

Yeah, I know there's a lot of romance novels out there. I've always attributed the reason why there is a higer proportion of them in supermarkets because that has traditionally been the "women's place to shop" and it is more likely a woman would buy a book there than a man. You're also much more likely to find a Cosmopolitan magazine at the checkout than a Maxim. I don't think that their sheer number of steamy romance novels is because they all have a place on the New York Times Bestseller list. If you go to any actual bookstore, the romance novels probably don't occupy one-tenth of the store; much less than the proportion in these catalogues.

I'm just trying to be informative. You don't need to "justify" a damn thing, because I'm not judging you, just offering more information for you to do with as you please.

Overreact much? He wasn't challenging you, he was just spouting information.

Well most of the used bookstores I go to have shelves and shelves of romance, but little in the way of Fantasy or Science Fiction.

I'm looking forward to Losing the Peace though. I am attempting to judge the book by its title in this case.

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

No 'making of' book on the feature listed. I remember publisher's weekly had a nice one-page ad for all the trek books months ahead of TMP's release, and of course anybody who read STARLOG knew about the non-fic books months before release as well.

Kinda makes me wish S&S would sublicense somebody to do the nonfic stuff. Either a place that does illustrations fairly well like DK used to, or a serious film book publisher to do a text-heavy research volume (which would be a nice augment to whatever illustrated mag STARLOG or whoever winds up doing, assuming there is still going to be one of those at least.)

Or maybe that's all a thing of the past and BTS/making of is only a DVD supplement notion to Paramount.

Sadly, almost every nonfic ST book that Pocket produced to celebrate ST:TMP ended up on bargain tables, at remaindered prices, not that long after they came out:

"The Making of ST:TMP", the "Make-Your-Own Costume Book", "Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology", "Star Trek Speaks", "Make-a-Game" book, two "Punch-out-and-make-it" books, "Chekov's Enterprise"..., to name a few off the top of my head.

I know, because I placed special orders for a few titles - and ended up finding them remaindered before my order could be filled.

"Starlog" eventually gave up on movie mags... They went crazy on ST IV, with a "deluxe" edition and the usual movie magazine and poster book.

Are you sure? I thought I had a Starlog movie mag for Star Trek VI way back in the day. I remember it well because it spoiled Valeris' role in the movie. It might not have been put out by Starlog but I was almost sure it was.

I think you'll find the annoying SPOILER caption belonged to the "Cinefantastique" spread.

but yeah, they did do a few more after ST IV. Mine are in the garage since I moved house. Haven't touched them in ages, which is very annoying.

Starlog did "movie mags" at least up to Generations, along with the premieres of DS9 and Voyager. I don't recall if they did anything for First Contact and beyond.

Titan I believe did a magazine for First Contact, not sure if they did or not for Insurrection and as for Nemesis, I'm positive they didn't.

They did indeed release one for Insurrection. No separate magazine was produced for Nemesis, but there was a supplement along those lines included in Star Trek Monthly issue 100.

Cool. Titan Books (at least, I think it was Titan) also did a "making of" book for First Contact, which wasn't released in the States, but I was able to order a copy via Amazon UK.

Hopefully the 80,000 words of the novel live up to the first three. :techman:

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

TrekMovie has new details for 2009 and 2010 from Margaret Clark. Beware SPOILERS.

Some interesting items:
  • What appear to be final covers for Losing the Peace, The Soul Key and The Never-Ending Sacrifice
  • Vanguard book 5 and the follow-up to Full Circle have titles; Titan book 6 has a new title.
  • Spring 2010 to be for "classic Gene Roddenberry Star Trek".
  • David Mack gets to expand his Glass Empires story into a separate novel in February 2010.
  • A new alien threat will arise in Losing the Peace, leading to an intertwining "meta-story" in 2010, where the Aventine may get its own novel. Clark emphasises that the stories are still stand-alone.
  • The Romulan War will not cover the whole of the conflict - some spoilers regarding Vulcan's role in the novel are revealed.
  • Sadly, some delays - Seven Deadly Sins is delayed until March 2010, the third Myriad Universes book, now with a title, is delayed until Summer 2010, and the CoE omnibus Out of the Cocoon is delayed twelve months to December 2010.
  • No comment on Star Trek (2009) tie-ins. "Not at the present time", says Clark.
  • The Aventine gets a design!

Re: Tentative Covers & Descriptions for Upcoming Summer 2009 Trek Book

Wow. Lots of new stuff there. Wasn't expecting all the info.

Love the concept design for the Aventine! Not exactly what I had envisioned (I just went with a four-nacelle design I've tinkered with for years and years), but as sleek as I would like it to be.

I like the idea of a new enemy. Always figured there'd be someone new after the Borg. I like how Voyager will apparently lead a fleet. I hope they have a specific mission or goal to shoot for.

Too bad we have to wait two years now for more SCE.
