Absinthe legality confirmation needed

Rÿcher

Fleet Captain
I heard from someone that the legal status of absinthe has been overturned in the US. Can anyone confirm this?

Absinthe, in technicality, is legal within the United States. However, thujone (which is potentially one of the components of the psychedelic effects of absinthe) is banned by the FDA, and is therefore illegal in the USA. U.S.-based makers of absinthe filter out the thujone.

So, "true" absinthe is still illegal to sell in the States, but the mildly diluted form is relatively widely available.

I'm not sure that's correct.

I buy my absinthe online from a British company called Absinthe Classics.

At present, due to "problematic customs clearances," they do not import absinthe into Canada. The only brand they sell to Canadians, Taboo, is made in Canada by Okanagan Distillers of BC. (This is the stuff I drink.)

But according to their website, Absinthe Classics ships to all fifty US states. In fact, they say that 95 per cent of their business is with American customers.

I only trust half of what I see and none of what I hear or read especially that of what I read on the interweb.

Lucid is the Absinthe I drink. It is available in the U.S. and is made with wormwood, the ingredient that had been banned long ago.

but you say that you are trustworthy yet you write for wikipedia yet you are trustworty yet wiki...trust...canon...kirkunit....BOOM

It's like this;

I'm at the break room at an office. "Hey buddy. Have you heard absinthe is legal now?"

"Really? I'll have to look that up on wikipedia."
or,
"Really? Wow, that's interesting." goes off to ask his friends at the bar (here)

that's not really heading where I was hoping... but I hope you see where I was intending.

I had this one night, the Okanagan Absinthe, and had some pretty severe memory blackouts and woke up top of my bed with all my clothes on and no idea how I got there.

Good times!

It's one of the great American legal loopholes. It's illegal to produce and sell "true" absinthe within the United States, but it's legal to import such a substance.
