Re: EPISODE #63 of STAR TREK: SHUFFLE THE DECK

Hmm...sounds like this woman might've been manipulated by some force. I wonder if the Cardassian who killed O'Brien was also being manipulated?

And boy is Lokad drawing a false analogy here...Picard had no control over his actions once he was assimilated, whereas Lokad made a choice to torture O'Brien and all those people on Setlik II.

What happened on Setlik III was all about choices and the motives behind them, for everyone there. At Setlik, O'Brien did what he had to do out of defensive motives and though it's hard for him to live with, it wasn't for himself that he did it. It was to save others. As for those who ordered the attack--they pressed forward even though they should have concluded early on in the attack that their intelligence was faulty. As for those like Lokad, who conducted the torture--they did so of their own free will. No matter how oppressive the Cardassian state is, it's not like the Borg in that ultimately it IS a choice even if you know very well what fates you're choosing between.

(The choices made on Setlik III are something I intend to work with as well in the background of my own story, but I won't give away too much.)

Re: EPISODE #63 of STAR TREK: SHUFFLE THE DECK

Yes..I totally agree with the difference of Locutus and what Lokad did...I think he is trying to push Picard's buttons...And I think, like you, there is more going on here than meets the eye...

#64

With the ruse over, Angela and Daniel freed Admiral Janeway. Bakooth, Jake and Admiral Bachmeier stood around the decapitated android. The body of the android was motionless in the center of the room. The removed head was sitting on the counter near the kitchen alcove. We join the conversation.

“And you’ve been held captive all this time?” Bachmeier asked Janeway.

Janeway nodded, “Yes, however, the memory of our meetings have been experienced by the android, stored, and then later downloaded into my memory. So, Admiral, even though we have never met, to me: we have.”

Bachmeier looked to Angela and Daniel. “And you two built the android?”

“Yes sir,” Daniel replied. “I built up the vocal matrix, and the outer skin of the android. Angela engineered the buffers and relays, as well as the memory transfer components.”

“And they did this,” Janeway said, “with out any Starfleet education. From what I have heard them discuss, they are Augments.”

“Impressive, very impressive. Makes you wonder if those laws are outdated” Backmeier said with genuine respect.

“Excuse me,” Jake Sisko said to Admiral Bachmeier, “But they could have easily killed Admiral Janeway.”

“It’s okay Jake: I agree with Admiral Bachmeier,” Janeway said, “What they have done is extraordinary. The ability to create an android duplicate that can experience anything, and then transfer those memories, those sensations, into a person’s mind? It is impressive.”

Backmeier nodded, “But why? Why go through all the trouble?”

“There were obvious gaps of time,” Janeway said. “Whatever it was doing outside of what was downloaded into my mind is unknown to me.”

“But not to them,” Backmeier said as he looked over to Angela and Daniel. “I want you two to tell me what this android was doing. And I want you to tell me now.”

“We don’t know,” Daniel said.

“You expect me to believe that?” Bachmeier came back with.

“Admiral, whether you believe us or not; I honestly don’t care anymore.” Angela replied. “And now, because of your discovering us, my brother, and Daniel’s parents, will be killed.” Angela said as she buried her hands in her face.

Bachmeier looked to Janeway. “What do you think we should do?” Bachmeier.

Suddenly, a voice spoke from the decapitated head of the android, which had been sitting on the table.

“Actually,” the deep voice of a man said, “there is nothing you can do.”

They all turned to face the android’s head. The eyes of the android’s head were now opened.

“Who are you,” Admiral Janeway, “And why have you done this?”

The voice, which was deep, and confident, replied.

“All you need to know now, Kate Janeway, is that my is Mr. Mortavo,” the Android’s head stated, “Bakooth, are you still there?”

Bakooth nodded, “I am.”

“You’re part of this?” Jake asked in anger. “So all that stuff about smelling Janeway was a lie?”

“Um,” Janeway said, “excuse me?”

Bakooth nodded. “Yes. The deception worked.”

“What about our meeting in France?” Jake asked Bakooth. “I found you at that restaurant and hired you after that. The only way this could have worked is if…” Jake paused, “Korena! It was her idea to even go there: She’s involved.”

“What is going on here?” Janeway demanded.

The android spoke again, but now with the voice of Korena Sisko.

“Jake, I’m here.” Korena said.

Jake turned to the android’s head. “Korena?” Jake asked, “What is going on?”

“I’m so sorry,” Korena’s voice replied. “They had Kassidy and little Joseph all along. They never made it to Vulcan. If I hadn’t done what they said, they were going to kill them…” she was cut off.

“I think you get the general picture,” Mortavo’s voice cut in. “Unless what I say is followed to the letter,” Mortavo said, “your loved ones will die. It is that simple.”

“And what exactly is it you want us to do?” Jake asked, feeling powerless.

Suddenly the door to Janeway’s opened and in walked Pascal Fullerton.

“Oh, it’s quite simple what we want you to do,” Fullerton said as he came into the room. “We want you to kill the President of the Federation. And then,” Fullerton said as he held out a phaser, “we will kill every alien on this planet: Even those who were foolish enough to help us.”

Fullerton fired his phaser, striking Bakooth, and incinerating him.

The death of Bakooth will have Repercussions down the line..meaning? If I were Mr. Fullerton, I'd be expecting a knock on my door from Bakooth's older and much more narley brother...

I am sure we will find out that Bakooth was forced to help Mortavo and Fullerton...they must have had some leverage on him as well...I also like the fact that since Kassidy never made it to Vulcan, maybe we will see her and Little Joseph soon...(i think they're going to show up over on the Balboa Spoke of the wheel...hint hint)

EPISODE #65 of STAR TREK: SHUFFLE THE DECK

Star Trek: Shuffle the Deck
Balboa—Deep Space Nine—Federation Earth: and introducing Septos-14

SHUFFLEBALBOA5.jpg

#65

The USS BALBOA was limping. The journey through the wormhole was violent. By the time the ship exited the wormhole: fifteen crew members were dead, including Lt. Elame, the Bajoran Navigator who was liked by so many on the ship. The ship had exited the wormhole deep inside the Gamma-Quadrant. Any attempt to re-enter the wormhole had to be discounted due to the violent forces encountered inside of it, and the swarm of Thraval on the other side.

Commander Everett West, who had ran engineering before becoming the acting Captain due to the absence of Captain Duell, surveyed the damage assessments his new chief of engineering gave to him: it wasn’t good. The damage to the Balboa was extensive. Even though it didn’t matter at this point, due to the affects of the Wave, the Warp Engines were now down for repair. Other systems were damaged as well. And with out the help of a space dock, or star-base, the repairs would be slow going. With the need for damage repairs, all work centers volunteered extra man power. West was also impressed with the Romulan crew members who had augmented the engineering crew. To S’ovak’s credit, his men were proving to be efficient members of this combined crew.

West entered the bridge. Ensign Wy’clan, a young man, and a direct descendent of the Atikamekw tribe of the Native Americans, was now manning the Navigation post. Unlike other Native American officers who served Starfleet, some of whom wearing ceremonial tattoo art as they did, Wy’clan chose not to wear such artwork. It was his tribe’s custom to only wear their markings while on Earth: home to their tribe. To do so would, according to custom, dilute the watchful eyes of their Gods. West had frocked Wy’clan to the rank of LtJg, but the promotion would not be official until midnight the following night.

West surveyed the rest of the bridge crew. Lt. Commander Thron, who was now third in command, was at his usual post, Communications. The female Efrosian, Kral, was at her science post. And as always, with a brooding scowl, was S’ovak. The Romulan commander stood next to West’s command chair. It was almost as if the Romulan had self appointed himself to first officer, and even Captain at times.

The new first officer of the Balboa was actually Commander Shigeru Ichiro. West had been impressed with Shigeru’s investigation of Kip’fk’s death. And because Shigeru was in the same academy class as West, and Captain Duell as well, he was the perfect choice. It didn’t hurt that they were the best of friends as well. Shigeru’s straight forward persistence had gotten West out of many problems back in their academy days.

Captain West sat down in his command chair.

“Good morning S’ovak,” West said. “How are you doing?”

“I am impressed with your crew’s ability to do regain their composure after the loss of so many shipmates,” S’ovak said. “I rather liked Mr. Elame. He will be missed.”

West looked over to the Navigation post, where Wy’clan was busy with his duties. It did seem odd not to see Elame trying to get Lt. Anrolla, the Swahili helmsman, to laugh at one of his unfunny Bajoran jokes.

Yet West, and most of the crew, had served during the Dominion War. The loss of friends was an unfortunate part of the equation. But new friendships were always forged. And West was confident that Wy’clan, and Shigeru, would meld their personalities with the other crewmembers. Life would go on.

“Captain,” First officer Shigeru said from the science station. Kral was looking a readings on her panel as Shigeru read them as well. “Lt. Kral suggests we take a look at the star system I spoke to you of. There is an M-class planet there. It might be a place to, as you say, pitch our tent until repairs are made. The next star system, at our best speed, is at least 800 years away.” His Japanese accent was light, but still noticeable. West thought it was ‘cool’.

“Are there any records of this planet in the ship’s library?” West asked.

“Negative,” Kral said. “No Federation starships have made it this deep into the Gamma-Quadrant. Not even the Klingons have. The only problem is the companion star. It is causing havoc with communications, and sensors. The only way we’re going to find out anything about that M-class planet is if we go there.”

West considered the suggestions. They could even stay at the planet, provided it was feasible, until such time Warp Speed was usable again.

S’ovak spoke, “Why don’t we just go back through the wormhole?”

West shook his head. “I don’t want to chance it,” he said. “We barely made it out of there in the first place. Besides,” West said, “those things (Thraval) are probably still looking for us on the other side. And in case they were to survive a trip through the wormhole, I suggest we put as much distance between them and our selves. That is why I put us on direct coordinates to Bajoran Wormhole.”

S’ovak didn’t like the sound of that at all. “With out warp speed, the journey to the wormhole will take thousands of your years to get to.”

“Which is why,” West said, “I suggest you let me teach you how to play poker. We’re going to get to know each other very well.”

Kaette oide, kaette kite,” Shigeru said softly as he joined West and sat in the first officer’s chair, which was to the right of West’s.

"Yes," West replied to Shigeru, "It could very well be our home for the time being."

S’ovak, with out any more to say, finally sat in the third chair, to the left, usually reserved for another officer. But S’ovak had clearly declared the third chair to be his in the here and now. It wasn’t the usual bridge arrangement, on an Excelsior class ship. But West ordered the reconfiguration just before they had left Septos-14. And with the wear and tear S’ovak was putting on the deck, it was good to see him finally sitting in the chair.

“Very well, soon to be Ltjg Wy’clan,” West said after he gave the matter more thought. “Go ahead and plot a course to this M-class planet.”

“Yes sir,” Wy’clan replied.

--
Meanwhile: on the M-class planet.

The mother was worried for her safety, and more importantly, she was worried about the safety of her ten year old son. She couldn’t believe they were where they were.

Nearly four months earlier, just before the wave hit, she was piloting her private transport ship towards Vulcan. With out warning, three smugglers overtook her ship, and then boarded it. They forced her, and her child, on to their own ship. The smugglers plotted a round about course for Earth, she surmised, which took them very close to the Klingon/Romulan border. Suddenly, with out warning, they were attacked by winged creatures. Three of the creatures managed to make it aboard the ship and killed all but three of the smugglers. They were able to finally overpower the creatures, but the ship was unexpectedly pulled into, of all things ironically, a wormhole. The ship was nearly torn apart, and was forced to land on the M-class planet, deep in the Gamma-Quadrant.

For the past four months, she and the smugglers had called the planet home. There was no sign of any intelligent life on the planet. So, trapped in the Gamma-Quadrant, she, and the smugglers, two human males and, of all things, a Horta, had signed a truce until they could get off the planet.

But she also was planning an escape, if the chance ever came. She wasn’t sure why she and her son, Joseph, had been abducted. But one thing she knew: it wasn’t for a good reason. And Kassidy Sisko would do whatever it took to save her child, even if it meant losing her life.

Aha! The Thraval are generating the wormhole...but to what end? That could be very dangerous indeed!

And poor Elame...I think I know somebody who, IF he ever gets resurrected with his old form and memories, might be quite upset. :(

The one thing I like about this story title, Shuffle The Deck? I actually take it literally and try to find ways to 'shuffle the deck'...from the events going on with Janeway and her android, and the twist with Korena and Bakooth...to the twists going on up with Picard and company and Lokad on DS9...and the Balboa. Hurq Treasures, Elane and her Vuclan companion, Tiberius, and now, Kassidy Sisko showing up after the Balboa is thrown into the Gamma-Quadrant (and the new Dominion threat)...its like throwing a deck of cards in the air and wondering where they will land..its fun to write..and the tangents...is Odo dead? What about Q? How does this all tie in with Spock and the others on the ESSIANS adventure?..fun fun fun...

actually...I do have a master plan. I actually wrote most of this story some time back. I have altered some of it to jazz it up a bit..some of it is new, mainly the Balboa part. Most of it is from old notes..the hardest part is timing the events that will happen with Spock and company with what is happening with the other spokes of the wheel...plus now we have gotten to the part where future Elaine, and Tiberius (the son of Spock and Michelle Duell, sort of) will soon be interaacting with our characters in this part of the time...the character of Sheppard, then and now, was always the hardest to write for...a good friend of mine is helping me with the 'Essians' part of the story..which i need..because it is weird, what is going to happen...

I just hope the readers have the patience to keep reading...its almost like a soap opera with all the characters..I am going to have to put up a new "CAST ROLL CALL" so even I can keep up with who is where

#66

Even though it was happening inside of his mind, much like a dream, Jean Luc Picard could tell that the destruction he was witnessing was as real as it could be.

A massive fleet of Jem’Hadar swarmed around a planet, and with out delay, the ships began to bombard the world beneath them. Wave after wave of blasts were fired from the ships, causing untold damage. Picard could only hazard a guess as to how many ships were part of the armada, but it had to be in the thousands, perhaps even ten thousand. The attack went on an on.

The desired result was finally reached. The battered world exploded, and was obliterated. The Jem’Hadar fleet had taken no losses. Picard could only wonder why the Jem’Hadar felt it so necessary to use overwhelming force on a world that offered no defense.

The images in Picard’s mind shifted to another much smaller fleet of Jem’Hadar vessels. Picard recognized the formation, having seen it when he traveled to the other side of the wormhole to confer with Odo. The ship that had been Odo’s suddenly exploded, as did the others.

The dream ended, and Picard realized he was no longer on DS9. He was in the all white universe of the Celestial Temple. He knew he was in the temple because he had been here before. It was when he, Q and Evan Cooper were brought inside of the Temple, inside of the wormhole, and Sisko eventually sent Cooper on a mission to the Gamma-Quadrant to find the elusive Essians.

Picard was relieved when he saw the Founder, Odo, former chief of security on DS9, come out of the whiteness.

“Admiral Picard, it is good to see you again.” Odo said.

“When we last met, you showed me the Starship Sheppard you had found in the Gamma-Quadrant. I assume Spock’s team made it there?”

“Yes, they did.” Odo said. “However, right after the Sheppard vanished, on its way to who knows where, the ship I was on exploded. I was destroyed, and was brought here by the Emissary.”

“You were destroyed?” Picard asked softly. “What were those images that I saw?”

Q and Sisko came out of the whiteness.

“Q,” Picard said, “how are you still involved with all of this?”

“Me? What did I do?” Q said. “The images you saw of the Jem’Hadar attacking that world are compliments of me, which is about all I can do. What you are about to hear is the result of Riker and his Essian friends.”

“Riker?” Picard asked, “What does Captain Riker have to do with all of this?”

Sisko spoke. “The Essians are using Riker to funnel all of the Q’s power, so as to insure that Spock and the others can complete what must be done in order to save the galaxy.”

“And so,” Q said, “I have no real powers. But I can show events as they unfold, or have unfolded, as I wish to. Think of me as nothing more than a walking crystal ball.”

“Cue ball,” Picard said with ironic humor in his voice.

Odo took over, “And what he showed you: was the destruction of the great link.”

“Your world was destroyed,” Picard said, “by the Jem’Hadar? I thought, to them, you were Gods.”

“That is not the case any more,” Odo said. “The loss of the Dominion War cast doubt on that belief. The Vorta, seeing the end of our hold on the Jem’Hadar, began to undermine us as well. I was shielded from this truth by who I thought was a trustworthy assistant.”

“Weyoun,” Picard concluded.

“Yes,” Odo said, “I had once attempted to save a Weyoun clone, and I made the misfortune of believing I could trust one again.”

Picard turned to face Q and Sisko. “Very well,” Picard said, “what now?”

“You haven’t seen the rest,” Q said. “So pay attention.”

Picard found himself back inside of his mind. The Jem’Hadar fleet had destroyed the home world of the founders. The fleet would now be one of the more formidable powers in the galaxy. But that dominance would only last for a little more time.

Suddenly, with out warning, a massive fleet of ships came out of warp. The scope of the battle was unimaginable. The new invading fleet was comprised of thousands of Borg cubes. The Borg and the Jem’Hadar fleets engaged each other in what was no doubt one of the most epic fleet battles of all time. All though they put up a gallant effort, the Jem’Hedar, caught off balance, eventually lost the battle. Most of the Jem’Hadar ships self-detonating, rather than allowing them selves to be assimilated by the Borg.

Picard came out of it, and was, once again, in the all white universe, along with Odo, Q and Sisko.

“How did the Borg know to show up at the right moment to destroy the Jem’Hadar. It almost seemed like it was a set up.” Picard asked.

Sisko and Q both looked to Odo, as if Odo had the answer.

“Some time back, during the Dominion War,” Odo said to Picard, “I came into contact with a Founder named Laas. Unlike me, he did not trust the solids. While being taunted by Klingons on DS9, he killed them.”

“There had been other transgressions.” Sisko added. “But the Klingons demanded justice. To make a long story short, Laas escaped.”

Q smiled, “This is where it gets interesting.”

Odo continued, “Apparently Laas became aware of the coming Vorta/Jem’Hadar coup, but I didn’t believe him, nor did most of the Great Link. Apparently he, and some of the Founders who still distrusted the solids, made a deal with, as you would put the term, the devil.”

“The Borg,” Picard concluded softly.

“Yes, Jean Luc,” Q said with a broad smile, “the Borg.”

Odo looked to Q, then back to Picard, “The Borg and the Founders both want the same thing: a galaxy of order. It is clear they have entered an alliance, the Borg and the renegade members of the Great Link, to at last bring that order. The new alliance destroyed my home world. They then destroyed the Jem’Hadar fleet, taking out any real threat to the new Borg/Founder alliance.”

Sisko took over, “The Wave has affected the Transwarp conduits that the Borg use. The fastest way to this part of the galaxy is through the worm hole.”

“Can you close the wormhole?” Picard asked Sisko.

“Ah hah,” Q said, “This is where Riker and the Essians come into play. You will find this most interesting, Jean Luc.” Q said.

Sisko went on, “The Essians are drawing upon energy bounderies that include the Prophets. The Wormhole can not be closed. As it turns out, the Dominion fleet on the other side of the worm hole was destroyed by the explosion of Odo’s flagship, so that fleet no longer poses a threat. But the Borg fleet is on a direct heading for the wormhole.”

Picard felt the hair on the back of his neck prick up. “How long do we have until they get here? Warp speed doesn’t work over there either. If I’m not mistaken, the Great Link was several hundred light years from the wormhole. It would take that Borg fleet thousands of years to make that journey.”

“Not unless they use the same technology you used with the Sheppard,” Odo said, “and travel to the wormhole via another dimension. Before my death, I was well aware of the Vorta working on ways to travel in such a way as well. If the Borg were able to assimilate any vessel in that Dominion fleet that had information , such as tests, the Borg would no doubt be assimilating that data as we speak.”

Picard understood the gravity of the situation. If the Borg could travel via another dimension, and with a fleet of Borg vessels numbering in the thousands, they would be unstoppable.

And even if things ever went back to normal, the Federation, in fact the entire galaxy: would face an uncertain future with an alliance between the Founders and the Borg. It was a nightmare scenario.

“Well,” Picard finally said, “what can we do to counter this threat?”

Q looked to Sisko, then Odo, and then back to Picard.

“You’re asking us?” Q asked. “That’s why we brought you here.”

There was nothing but silence…

Man, the stakes just keep going up! I always see these Borg vs. Founder threads--but now to see them allied...uh-oh!

Rather fun, however, to see Q humbled. Something tells me The Sisko must be getting a kick out of this moment... ;)

One question about your Jem'Hadar...are they genetically altered to worship the Founders in your universe or no? If they are--how are they managing to fight their programming?

Kassidy Sisko held a nice hot mug of coffee in her hands. The warmth from the cup was doing a pretty good job of keeping her body warm. The early wisps of morning sunlight could be seen in the distance, as though someone one was slowly peeling back a cover on this remote world, deep inside the Gamma-Quadrant. She looked down at her son, Joseph, who was sleeping soundly next to her, in bundle of blankets. He was still sound asleep, as Kassidy brushed the side of his cheek with her soft warm fingers.

Betram Norris, the Captain of the beat-up old transport that had abducted Kassidy and Joseph from their own newer transport ship, was standing over the small fire that was burning in the middle of the camp. The fire not only provided much needed heat for their bodies, but it also provided the only means of heating food items like coffee. Most of the ship’s resources were either destroyed by the Thraval, or the trip through the unexpected wormhole, or were destroyed upon crashing on the uncharted world. Three old style Federation phasers had survived the crash. But it was decided to save them incase they were needed them to fight off local wildlife, or, God forbid, an attack by those winged monsters.

Kassidy watched as Betram came over to her with the kettle of coffee. For a no good smuggler, Kassidy thought, he made a pretty good pot of coffee. She held out her mug and watched as he topped it off.

“Thanks,” Kassidy said as Betram finished pouring the coffee and then sat down near to her and her son.

He looked at Kassidy, and her son as they young boy slept.

“I’m sorry,” Betram said, “This isn’t the kind of thing, being stranded on a world like this, a young boy should go through.”

Kassidy nodded. She could tell by the look of Betram’s face that he had lived a harsh life.

Then Betram continued, “I can see your mind surveying the situation practically every second,” he told her. “But even if you do escape, Kassidy, where would you go?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know,” she replied. “But, look at it from my point of view. Friends of yours might show up at any moment, and the next thing you know, we’re prisoners again.”

Betram shook his head, “By the looks of things, we are going to be here for quite a while. You saw the same messages I saw, months ago. That energy Wave was going to wipe out all means of warp travel, all through the galaxy. We’re kind of lucky those things attacked us, and we came through that wormhole and crashed here when we did. We would have run out of food with in two weeks had we not crashed here. I have learned that in all the chaos of life? There is some kind of control of it.”

Betram could tell by the look on her face, she knew the truth. But he could still see her scheming.

“So,” Betram said, “where will you go if you got away? I can promise to protect you while you are here, with us. However, if you run away from my friends, and I, then I can’t guarantee anything. My employer paid me quite well to fetch you, and I have. So, you can see, we both have much to lose if you try to run. You: your life. Me: my payment.”

“Who is your client?” Kassidy asked for the hundredth time it seemed.

Betram shook his head. “I keep telling you: I don’t know. In my business, secrecy and privacy are gold.”

“Don’t you even wonder what they’ll do to us?” Kassidy asked.

“Look,” Betram said, “for all I know, my employer could be your husband. Maybe you ran out on him, and he’s trying to get you and the boy back. I could actually be doing something good here.”

Kassidy looked at him and shook her head. “You’re just trying to justify your actions.” She sipped the coffee. “However, you do make a good cup of coffee. Right now it’s the only thing keeping me here.”

Kassidy looked over at Betram’s fellow smugglers. They were a married couple: A male Betazed and a female Horta.

“What about them?” Kassidy asked. “Do they care about my child’s safety as well?”

“Sure they do,” Betram replied. “They get a cut of the action too, you know. I will get half, and they will split the other half. Since most of the crew died during the attack by those monsters, we stand to make, the three of us, a pretty good profit.”

“So all we are, Josepth and I” Kassidy said, “are a giant payday to you.”

Betram nodded. “Rather a blunt way to put it, but in essence, you’re right. Most of my so called profit will go into trying to fix my ship. But since that doesn’t seem likely to happen, because it’s just a twisted pile of metal, I’ll probably be forced to take my half and buy my way on to another ship and start all over.”

“Being in your line of business can be rough life,” Kassidy said to him, as she reflected back on her own smuggling career.

“You should know,” Betram said with a slight chuckle, “you got caught, as I recall. In fact, didn’t your own old man catch you?”

Kassidy sipped on her coffee, “No, not exactly. We weren’t married yet, but yes, I got caught all right. The Maquis used me to lure him away from his post. I lost all respect for the Maquis. I was only providing them medical supplies, and would have gone on doing so, but they used me, and I went to jail and almost lost the man I love.”

“So, there it is. We have more in common than you think.” Betram said.

“No,” Kassidy countered with a slight tinge of anger, “we are not alike at all. I would never be involved in the smuggling of flesh. That, to me, is the lowest a smuggler can go.”

Betram looked at her for a long moment. “It helps pay the bills.” He replied as he downed the rest of his coffee.

At that moment, squawking came from the battered portable communications panel they had been able to salvage from the transport. It had been transmitting a very weak distress signal since their arrival on this world four months earlier.

--
The USS BALBO entered orbit of the seventh planet in the nearby uncharted star system. Due to the strange effect of the nearby companion star, a dark star, communications and sensors were unstable.

“Are you sure the signal came from this way?” Captain Everett asked the Gorn communications officer.

“Affirmative,” Thron replied.

Kral, the Efrosian science officer, chimed in. “According to our limited scans, there are trace elements in the atmosphere indicating that some kind of ship, probably under some kind of stress, penetrated the atmosphere.”

“They must have crash landed,” S’ovak said. “Perhaps they were victims of the Thraval as well.”

“But with Transporters down,” First officer Shigeru said, “due to the interference of the dark star, we will have to a ground search. That might leave us vulnerable to attack.”

Captain West nodded. “Perhaps, but if there is a crashed ship down there,” he told Shigeru, “We are duty bound to render assistance. So,” West said to the entire bridge crew, “we will go ahead and establish search parties and look for any signs of survivors.”

The crew snapped into action. Captain West could only imagine what they would find on the planet below.

--
Unknown to Captain West, and hidden behind the orbit of the eight planet: was another vessel. The commander of the vessel, a Vaadwaurian battle cruiser, sat in his command chair and observed the real time images of the Balboa in orbit of the other planet. His name was Gawthar. His first officer, Thelin, walked over to him.

“What now?” Thelin asked.

Gawthar thought for a moment. “Sometimes silence is the best approach. As long as they keep their presence on the seventh planet, we will let them be. The last thing we need is for them to get a signal off before we destroy them.”

“And what if they start exploring each world in this system?” Thelin asked. “They are Starfleet. You remember what Gaul said about Voyager and Starfleet: that is what they do. They explore.”

Gawthar nodded his head. “Yes, that is what they do.” He then looked at the image of the Balboa in orbit of the seventh planet in the system. “The moment they start exploring anything other than that world: We will destroy them.”

Star Trek: Shuffle the Deck
Balboa—Deep Space Nine—Septos 14—Federation Earth

#68

The Federation camp on Septos-14 was still manned by a skeleton crew that was left behind when the Balboa departed. Among the crew left behind was the highest ranking officer: LtJG. Martin Mistral.

Part of the Balboa’s medical crew, LtJG. Mistral was left behind to tend to some of the injured crewmembers. He was also spending part of his time at the nearby colony settlement, a small population of nearly five thousand, to help lesson the work load of the colony doctor.

Dr. Mistral was at the Federation camp. He was hard at work inside his make shift office which was situated in the main sleeping area and was cataloging his medical supplies, when the door to the barracks opened. Three people came in. One of them, a bearded man, was very dehydrated.

“Holy shit!” Mistral said as he stood up, forgetting his habit of using old Earth slang, he corrected himself, “Umm, pardon me.”

He came over and helped the other two newcomers situate the weakened man on one of the bunks. He looked to the two youngsters, a Vulcan make and a human female.

“What the hell is this crap, and who are you?” Mistral said, almost wanting to take back what he said. “Again, pardon me. Your sudden arrival has flustered me.”

Elaine smiled, “Don’t worry, I have heard worse.” She looked down at Riker, whose uniform was very dirty and sweaty. “His name is Captain William Riker and…”

Dr. Mistral cut her off, “Holy shit! Captain Riker? Here?” Mistral said, upon hearing the name. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a cigarette, and lit it up. “I find that when I inhale the poison of these things, it helps me cut down on my swearing.”

Elaine looked at Dr. Mistral. He was in his mid twenties, or so, and was in rather good shape. His face betrayed his nervousness. The fact he was so young was an indication that he wasn’t one of the more usually polished Starfleet officers: Elaine liked that.

Mistral looked back to Elaine as he knelt down and felt Riker’s pulse. “His pulse is very weak,” he told her, “how on Earth, well actually, how on Septos-14 did Captain Riker get here? Has he been here since the wave passed?” Then he thought for a moment, “And how did you get here as well. What someone please tell me for Christ’s sake, what hell is going on?!”

Tiberius, Elaine’s Vulcan companion, found Mistral to be a very interesting example of humanity: flawed. His father, Spock, had warned him of such humans, and how to appreciate them more than the polished humans who came off as unnatural, at times.

“Will Captain Riker live?” Tiberius asked.

“No, he will die,” Mistral said as he checked Riker’s glands for swelling. Then he reached into his medical pack and pulled out an old style hypo. The slight hissing noise could be heard as Mistral injected Riker.

“We were too late,” Elaine said with sorrow in her voice. “He must have been dying of thirst the entire time.”

Tiberius hugged her.

“Oh crap, wait a moment,” Mistral said with a slight chuckle, “I didn’t say he was going to die right now. Well, if he ate some of the food our cook has been preparing, it might happen, but what I meant to say was that someday he will die, we all will. He just needs some rest, and then he will be just fine. Now, just who are you people?”

Suddenly someone else entered the barracks. It was a young female Ensign and she came over to them.

Mistral looked to her. “Ensign, could you please reorganize my medical bag. It’s all jumbled up.”

Ensign Rose smiled. “Martin, I just reorganized it a couple hours ago.”

“I know, but look,” he opened it to show a mess of items inside of it. “I accidently dropped it and now, it’s a mess again.”

“Sure,” Ensign Rose said. She then looked at Riker on the bunk, and then over at the other two strangers. “Hello, my name is Ensign Rose. How did you two come to be on Septos-14?”

Elaine’s heart skipped a beat. She had been an infant when she left Septos-14 with Captain Michelle Duell, and ventured to Hotep to save the galaxy. The images of her mother’s face were just fragments. But now: here she was.

“Please excuse her,” Tiberius said, knowing full well who Ensign Rose was to Elaine. “We’re all very tired and thirsty.”

“Oh,” Rose said, “then in that case, just head to front of the barracks. Take the first door to the left, and you’ll be in the kitchen area. There is food and drink there.”

“Thanks,” Elaine said.

Elaine and Tiberius headed for the kitchen area. Ensign Rose remained with Dr. Mistral and helped him attend to Riker.

Once Elaine and Tiberius were in the kitchen, Elaine turned to Tiberius.

“Do you know who that woman is?” Elaine asked.

“You know that I do. She’s your mother. This is something you have always wanted: To meet your mother.” Tiberius said.

Elaine shook her head. “I hated my mother,” Elaine said softly. “She just let them take me and I lost what ever childhood I would have had.”

“Do you hate her any more?” Tiberius pushed.

“No,” Elaine said, “not after Spock explained it to me. I just wish, sometimes, that I could just go back and live the childhood I never had.”

“Do we tell them?” Tiberius asked. “Tell them who we are?”

Elaine shook her head. “No, I don’t think we should say anything just yet. We should wait until Riker comes around. He’ll know what to do.”

In the other room, Captain Riker opened his eyes. He was still fatigued, but he looked around and saw a silver instrument aimed at his ears. He grabbed the doctor by the wrist, and then sat up quickly.

“What’s going on here?” Riker demanded of Doctor Mistral.

“Captain, you are on the planet Septos-14,” Ensign Rose said, as she stood to the side of Mistral. “And the doctor is tending to your dehydration.”

“Oh, he is?” Riker asked the doctor.

“Ummm,” Mistral said, “Yes I am: asshole.” Mistral covered his mouth with his hands. “I didn’t mean to say that Captain Riker. I have a strange condition: I swear a lot and words just, well, they just come out when I don’t want them too.”

Riker let the Doctor’s wrist go. “I use to have the same problem,” Riker said to him.

“How did you stop it?” Mistral asked.

“Lots of,” Riker paused, “long nights in the company of beautiful women,” Riker said. “And looking at you,” Riker said, “I think it might help in more ways than one.”

Ensign Rose smiled, and satisfied Riker was fine, headed to the kitchen area to see on the status of Tiberius and Elaine

“Septos-14?” Riker said to himself. “Isn’t this planet near the Romulan/Klingon border?”

As Doctor Mistral filled in Riker on how they too came to be on Septos-14, Ensign Rose entered the kitchen to find Tiberius and Elaine kissing passionately. She smiled at them, and quickly shut the door, leaving them to their privacy. Ensign Rose sighed.

“Well,” she said to herself, “at least someone is getting some.”

Meanwhile…far off in space…there was a large object slowly drifting back towards the Septos-14 star system. Actually, it wasn’t a large object. It was several thousand objects, close together, creating the illusion of a large object. The objects could sense life up ahead. The Thraval were hungry: again.
