Please, spare me.
Kes was dead set on having children in "Elogium" and presuing a life with someone beyond Voyager in "Darkling". Why wouldn't she be upset that none of that happened?
Kes in "Fury" made every indication that is was the Kes we always knew. Pretending that it isn't doesn't erase actual canon. If it was to get rid of her, then they planned it around "Coldfire" because everything she was told that would happen to her once her powers came out actually did. So if it was poorly written then she was poorly written since "Caretaker" & "Time & Again" when she explained about her peoples mental abilities.
You're wrong in your assumptions.
Kes was set on having children in "Elogium" but accepted that the elogium was a false one and that it would be possible for her to have children in a later state of her life. She never complained about it or even mention it later on so there is no eveidence at all that she was upset in any way or that it would trigger the ridiculous events in "Fury".
Kes had a crush on Zahir in "Darkling" but in the end she decided to stay on the ship because she wanted to stay with her close friends. Once again, there is no evidence anywhere that she regretted that decision.
It has never been stated that the events in "Cold Fire" were part of some plan to get rid of Kes. If it had been, I'm sure that Berman, Braga and Taylor would have mentioned that in their excuses for getting rid of the character. It's more likely that the decision to get rid of Kes was a very quick one, considering the many flaws and the unrealistic scenario in "The Gift".
The pathetic, ridiculous wreck we did see in the horrible episode "Fury" had no resemblance at all with the real Kes. The reasons brought up for her wanting some sort of revenge on her crewmates is downright ridiculous and adownright shame for anything which has something to do with decent Star Trek writing. The real Kes would rather have sacrificed her own life than to harm any of her crewmates. Besides that, the "String Theory" books have come up with a plausible explanation what the pathetic creature we saw in "Fury" really was.
Everybody knows the books aren't canon.
Getting rid of Kes wasn't a quick one considering there had to be try outs from other actors for the roll of Seven of Nine. Many fans in America knew by the end of 2rd season someone would be leaving the cast. We knew by the middle of 3rd it would be Kes. So it took considerable time to plot it all out. So the abilities she's shown in "Coldfire" are the same exact abilites that cause the character to leave, the writers just tied it all in. That in of itself is crystal clear. B&B&T didn't need to mention it, we all saw it for ourselves on TV.
I think
kimc explains Kes' reason in "Fury" rather nicely. I suggest you debate her about that issue. However, if no evidence is given about Kes being unhappy not having a child or life outside of Voyager, I don't see why anybody should accept Kes in "Fury" wasn't her either because the same rules applies.
So what? The books are continuing the Voyager story and the explanations in the "String Theory" books are plausible and also acceptable for the fans.
The decision to bring in a Borg character or a "sexy babe" was made in the middle of season 3 (finally they decided to bring in a sexy babe Borg character) but it wasn't decided who should be kicked out. The first choice was obviously Kim but when that silly poll among the staff of amagazine showed him as one of "the 50 most handsome", they decided to dump Kes instead. Therefore the flawed, unrealistic story in "The Gift".
The events in "Cold Fire" had nothing at all to do with "Fury", it actually contradicts the events in "Fury because in "Cold Fire" Kes overcame Tanis's temptations with her strong will and saved the ship at the same time, thus showing that she had the will and strength to overcome evil temptation.
Kes was the last one of the ship's crew who could become some crazy idiot.
I've also read
kimc's statement and I have to disagree with it.
Whatever happened to Kes after leaving Voyager, there were no reasons at all for her to blame Janeway and her other crewmates.
First of all, Kes joined the Voyager crew of her own free will.
Second, she wanted to explore space and learn.
Third, she loved her life on Voyager and her crewmates, something which we could see in allthe episodes in seasons 1-3. She would rather have sacrificed herself than to harm them.
And don't forget that Janeway saved Kes's life on two occasions, first when they rescued her from the Kazon (OK, Neelix staged that rescue attempt but it would have been impossible without Janeway and the Voyager crew) and then in "Sacred Ground".
Besides that, Janeway was a friend who Kes could turn to if or when she had any problem. There were no reasons for Kes to become hostile against Janeway. Only an idiot would blame Janeway and Kes was definitely no idiot.
I must say that I still wonder how someone could come up with such a flawed, downright idiotic plot as the one in "Fury". It must have been an idiot or a sadist who really hated the character, or both.
