Would You Describe Yourself as a Nationalist/Patriot?

I think America is going downhill fast. Honestly, I would seriously consider moving to Canada if I had the money and I job lined up.

Just move you pussy. A lot of people come from overseas to start a new life here with hardly anything; you should be able to emigrate to Canada if that's what you really want. Start looking for a job - it's not that hard thanks to the internet.

Unless you fall into certain skill classes, and assuming zero legal or medical issues, it isn't all that easy. Canada is actually pretty strict when it comes to people immigrating into their country, other than refugees that is.

I don't think it's correct to conflate nationalism with patriotism. I see the former as more blind jingoism and something to be avoided. The latter I see more as a pride for one's nation that could be expressed any number of ways. However, I don't see patriotism as a form of communitarianism; there is still the notion of rational free choice as to how to express patriotic feelings--if one wishes to express them at all.

actually, it's MUCH easier to get your immigrant visa approved by Canada than by the USA. if I am not mistaken, a health issue is one of the few problems they latch on to. because of nationalized health care, I guess.

Refugees, yes. Students, yes. Work visa, hard unless you fall into certain skill sets. Family Visa, harder still; you have to prove sufficient familial ties and a valid familial relationship. Got medical on the last two, you can about forget it all together; especially if you're a US citizen and are deemed what is called in slang a "medical refugee"-- a US citizen looking to cash in on the NHI.

Been down the road both ways; US green-card (for my wife) and going through the research and contacting for myself when we move back to Canada. Health issues, certain types of convictions and/or arrest records, and in general anything that makes it look like you're going to end up on Canadian welfare or be a drain on the tax-payers will get you denied. The big difference between the US and Canada is the appeal process and how that's handled-- in some cases in the US, you waive the right to appeal immigration decisions. Though Canada does have a faster turn around on their Visas than the US.

Wow, how rude of you. The fact is America IS is a state of decline currently. Our government is increasingly corrupt and is becoming more and more socialist by the day. I don't have a problem with socialism but we are supposed to be a capitalist free-market democratic society and we really aren't anymore. Anyone who says so is lying. Most Americans have their morals and idea of what government should and shouldn't do totally screwed up as evidenced by recent elections. At the rate we are going I will be surprised if America doesn't collapse in my lifetime.

I feel no need to be "patriotic" because I was born in America than I feel the need to have pride and "school spirit" in my former high school because I attended it. People should look at things objectively and not through rose-colored lenses.

I don't want to move to Canada. I like it here in America but this place is getting worse and worse and I don't see it getting much better for at least a few years and right now Canada has it's act together much more than us.

I don't want to move to Canada.

Well, then, that's the beauty of it: you don't have to.

I like it here in America but this place is getting worse and worse and I don't see it getting much better for at least a few years

If you think there's something wrong with America: Try and help FIX IT.

and right now Canada has it's act together much more than us.

Anyone else want to quote the line about the grass always being greener on the other side of the fence? ;)

Wow, how rude of you.
Yes, I have very little patience for whining whiners who sit there and whine about how horrible the US is and how they're going to move to Canada.

The fact is America IS is a state of decline currently.
It's maybe about as bad as it was in the '70s, and the '30s were way worse. The world is not going to end.

Our government is increasingly corrupt and is becoming more and more socialist by the day.
:guffaw: and yet

I don't have a problem with socialism but we are supposed to be a capitalist free-market democratic society and we really aren't anymore.
The problem is that a completely free market and a democratic society tend to be mutually exclusive, as an oligarchy would tend to form. But it still gives me a good laugh whenever someone whines about Obama being elected by claiming he's socialist.

Most Americans have their morals and idea of what government should and shouldn't do totally screwed up as evidenced by recent elections.
Morals are relative, and all the recent election proves is that the majority of Americans thought Obama would do less harm to the country than McCain.

At the rate we are going I will be surprised if America doesn't collapse in my lifetime.
Oh Noz! Teh evil Democrats are in charge! OMG!

I feel no need to be "patriotic" because I was born in America than I feel the need to have pride and "school spirit" in my former high school because I attended it. People should look at things objectively and not through rose-colored lenses.
Or crimson colored glasses either, for that matter. ;)

So move.

No, I would not describe myself as either a nationalist or a patriot. While I certainly feel a sentimental attachment to my country and its culture I'm not proud of it, since it is pure chance where we're born.

I agree with you on this one.

I love America, but Patriotism is overused and misunderstood. It's become such a negative thing that I don't want to be a part of.

What about Australia or New Zealand?

Wow, how rude of you.
Yes, I have very little patience for whining whiners who sit there and whine about how horrible the US is and how they're going to move to Canada.

If someone's just whining and not taking active steps to do anything about it, that's one thing. My opinion changes when someone actually DOES what they say they're going to do, though--because at least then that's someone acting on whatever their convictions are. I can respect said action even if I don't agree with it.

Well, you better learn either patience or silence, because if I see you Flame anybody again, I will give you a Warning. It's possible to debate and express your opinions without name calling.

We Dutch are quite proud of our country; I dont think there's any nation that rivals the reverance of their national colour (orange) on international football matches or national holidays (Queensday) etc. Nonetheless we Dutch can be quite sober, we only display the flag at certain events, and publicly showing any form of nationalism (when its not appropriate) is frowned upon and often associated with right-wing extremism.
