Terminator Salvation International Trailer

Wow...that was awesome. Another big blockbuster year next summer and I can't wait. Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Transformers 2, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine are what I'm most looking forward to seeing. That looked great, and I didn't think Bale was overacting at all...I think though he was indeed attempting to get the point across to the audience that this is the Future War and things are not as they seem. He succeeds.

I don't know. What's up with his gravely voice? I know people complained about it in his Batman films, and it is not nearly as bad here (however I never had a problem with it, because Batman is suppose to have a deep and gravely voice) but his voice here just seems deep...because?

Like every line seems like he's forcing it.

"You tried to kill my mother....you killed my father...and you are not going to kill me!"

C'mon.

Look, I love Christian Bale. He's literally my favorite actor, but he's just like any other actor. When working with a sub-par director, his acting may not be the best it could be. I mean Bale's worked with Steven Spielberg, Terence Malik, Werner Herzog, Michael Mann and Christopher Nolan. All terrific directors. And now he's working with...McG.

I'm going to give Bale, McG and the entire film the benefit of the doubt, but as much as the trailer was indeed gorgeous looking, I'm still cautiously optimistic and not impressed. Bale has been on the fringe of Hollywood blockbusters so far, not appearing in any conventional, straight-up industry action films, but this appears like it might break that streak.

Bale has credibility, and I'm hoping his credibility is going to lend this film some gravitas, but at the end of the day, not even his performance will be able to save the film.

So here's hoping.

Well, I'd say Reign of Fire was a pretty conventional action film (and not a very good one at that).

I will say that I'm really curious myself (and have my doubts) about how this will turn out. I really enjoy both Charlie's Angels movies but they ain't no masterpieces, that's for sure. So I'm not really sure whether McG will be able to deliver or not.

In some way I think that maybe one of the best things he could do is to give people like Bale as well as the creative guys coming up with all the designs, animations, effects etc. as much slack as possible (without losing control, naturally). He or the studio seem to have assembled quite a talented crew all in all. If they are allowed to do their bits, it could turn out very well. And that's really what I'm hoping for.

You could say that over-acting has been a feature of all of the Terminator movies. 'And it will not stop UNTIL YOU ARE DEAD!' would not have worked had Michael Biehn aimed for subtle-understatement. Or Joe Norton's chattering teeth in T2, or Kristana Lohken's orgasm face when she detects John's blood in T3. I like all of those performances - but the series isn't Merchant Ivory. A degree of OTT is called for.

I've been somewhat uninterested in this movie, mainly because of the involvement of McG and also because the series seemed somewhat played out, after the fun-but-unnecessary T3 and the rather pointless TV show. But I liked this trailer a lot. Perhaps this movie is also in the 'unnecessary' category but it should at least give good spectacle. Not convinced of Anton Yelchin as Reese (You Sir, are no Michael Biehn!) but Bale looks the part, much more so than Nick Stahl - he looks like a cross between a grown up Ed Furlong and the guy who cameoed as adult John at the start of T2. The bikes rocked, the scenes between Connor and the Terminator looked impressive and the gigantic machine at the end was pretty breathtaking. This could be as good as the first two movies, by the looks of things.

brief thoughts:

first, Terminator 3 was not an outright flop. I am openly surprised at this, but seriously, I walked out of the theater going "that wasn't half bad, and I feel like it was worth my money"

it was just in the shadow of its predecessors, and did not become a new cultural icon. The acting was decent all around, the fight scenes were good, just not iconic (we've been seeing so much wire-fu and CGI, that it was nice to have old-fashioned Stan Winston-esque prop fights for once)

and basically, it served to move the plot forward to "okay, Judgement Day happens anyway, now we can have a new trilogy focusing on the Future War"

so I don't begrudge T3

MOVING ALONG

At first I cursed T4 when I heard about that controversial ending leak, but apparently that's not going to happen anymore and was just a crazy rumor.

But seriously, I've been wanting a movie like this for ages.

Not....not the "Future War" seen in T1 and T2 per se...that was like, 2 decades into the war.

I'm talking about the BEGINNING of the war, with Skynet and its Terminators basically the dominant race on the planet, hunting humans in the rubble.....and (echoes of Kyle's evocative speech) "One man turned it around, taught us to storm the wire of the fences, make weapons, and smash those bastards back into junk"

So I want to see Connor liberating concentration camps and stuff and *Forging* the Resistance (They're officially called "Tech-Com" right?)

Anyway, the T2 scenes were also after decades of war. I want to see like...still recognizable rubble from 2007ish.

I mean its one thing to see "the ribs of a nuked out skyscraper"

but...there's this evocative scene from "World War Z" in my mind, describing a field of rubble with a children's backpack with a "Spongebob Squarepants" design, splattered with blood and dirt

faceless skeletons of skyscrapers aren't scary.....the ruins of a local Wallmart or Ciruit City, covered with leaves and a deer walking through it...that's kind of disturbing. You know, places I'd actually go; like, a ruined Burger King (both product placement AND hitting home)

but I digress.....

as this film is the "Rise of John Connor and how he forges the Resistance" I was at first surprised to hear that a major plot element is that Connor ISN'T in charge yet; granted he commands his own cell of rebels, but surviving military who are like, 20 year career Marine officers and detachements who survived, don't treat this "civilian" like he's anything

but then I realized....this makes complete logical plot sense. I mean...yeah they got nuked, but remnants of the army almost certaintly survived in bits and pieces, and why would everyone, *with no prior explanation*, just start following this one guy who isn't an officer in anything? I mean surviving Marine and Army officers probably would think he was some wacko.

But then he liberates lots of concentration camps, and he's *really good at killing Terminators* and gradually more people rally to him as the leader of the Resistance.

So while the original movies never really stated that.....logically it almost certaintly had to happen. He'd run into surviving military people who question why he's in charge.

Of course.....I wonder how Connor gets so good at killing Terminators.

I mean in T2 and T3....he's experience at fighting Terminators, but by 10 years post-Judgement Day, so is everyone. They mention in passing that until he was like 8, Sarah was bringing him around all over Mexico and such showing him how to use guns and "to be a "Great Military Leader"..."

but the most I can see is that he's just really smart and thinks outside the box, plus he *doesn't underestimate the Terminators*

I think, judging from trailers, that a major plot element of T4 will be that the pockets of the regular military command that survived (logically there are a few) ......will still think that Skynet is just a haywire military system. They won't respect it as a truly sentient AI, will consistently underestimate Skynet's capabilities, and run their men into a meat grinder. Meanwhile, Connor is the one who's smart enough to figure out the Terminators.

Meh...I dunno. If it didn't have "Terminator" in the title, I would never have known this was suppose to fall within that series. Seems like they are banking on whatever strength the franchise has left.

While I plan to see the movie, I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD.

I guess. However every film has a moment where the character reaches its realization -- the moment where it steps out of its subtle box and gets a bit overly emotive -- Christian Bale has certainly had those moments in all of his films, for the most part, including the Batman films, and perhaps I'm being unfair since this is just a trailer.

However for the most part, Michael Biehn was pretty down-to-earth with his performance. Yes, he might have had a moment or two where he screamed or shouted, but I'm not asking for every character to act emotionless. I understand this is a franchise -- but there can be subtlety and nuance. I think James Cameron's films had it and there is a certain degree of balancing subtlety and being emotive in these films.

Just from the trailer, Bale seemed like he was really trying too hard to sell this sort of harsh, angry man. I mean I compare this trailer to the first trailer for Batman Begins and there's a big difference in the way that Bale handles the characters. I know that each character is different, but I think if Bale toned it down a bit (in the Terminator trailer) I wouldn't have had a problem.

Again, I'm critiquing based off a trailer, not even two minutes and even less of screentime from Bale. So I'll reserve judgment. Perhaps this trailer is composed of all of those "emotive" scenes where the character is reacting to something and since it is a trailer, the build-up is not present. It was just cut like one of those traditional, conventional action "shoot 'em ups" and I never for once took the Terminator series as just an action film. Yes, they were essentially action films, but they had a little more to them.

I'm going to stop now, because I'm over-analyzing.

"It's just a trailer, JacksonArcher, it's just a trailer..." :p

The scenes of the crushing skulls were a trademark of the Terminator films. James Cameron always tried to incorporate something being crushed into his films. We have seen skulls being crushed in:

The Terminator
Terminator 2

It has not been seen in
T3
TSCC

Don't get me wrong Jackson, I like Biehn as Reese a lot (in fact, I like Bien a lot full stop and think he's one of the Great Movie Stars Who Should Have Been). But you could definitely throw together a trailer for the original movie using only clips where he seems to be over-acting.

I think Bale has already been guilty of the odd over-acted performance himself over the years. Remember his 'chewing a brick' cock-er-ney accent in Reign of Fire? The only reason why it doesn't seem all that over the top is that he was alongside Matthew McConaughey, whose performance in that movie is over the top, down the next hill and over the top of the far mountain as well ...
