An Officer, you make it sound like Malibu is rum. Rum is made from sugar cane. Malibu is made from coconut, isn't it? And not made to be drunk alone. The typical mixer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malibu_Rum

You're partly right, rum infused with coconut extract.

I use it only as a mixer with diet coke, like I said in my first post. :D

The Captain is an easy drinking light golden spiced rum. Bacardi is shitty rum that needs a mixer to cover it's taste. Appletons is miles better and lately I'm a big fan of sailor jerry's spiced rum. Its delish!

I'm not concerned with how the rum tastes when neat, as I don't drink spirits neat, I was talking about their relative merit as mixers.

That's true, but that's not at all what you initially asserted when you stated that everyone who drinks runs the risk of losing control, so I feel you are misrepresenting the position you took.

That you can't conceive of anyone being certain of control is the damning factor.

Do you disagree with assertion that the possibility of losing control-mainly by means of excess consumption of alcohol-always remains? I am quite certain there are many who do possess excellent control (or think they do), but all it takes is one moment of weakness to foul things up.

As far as I am concerned, yes I disagree, the possibility of my accidentally getting drunk when I drink is no greater than the chance that I might accidentally accelerate to 100mph, accidentally drive down to the coast and accidentally drive off a cliff the next time I get in a car. No, I would have to make a conscious choice to do any of those things. I would also have to conciously make the choice to buy about 8 separate pints before I was anywhere near to losing control. No "moment of weakness" involved, it would take several sustained hours of weakness.

Again, that you can't imagine how I could always be capable of preventing myself from having that "moment of weakness" should I choose to drink but not reach the point of drunkenness is only a reflection on your own weakness. You purport to know my limits and capabilities, you only know and speak for your own.

I did not say anything specifically about your weaknesses, only those of people in general. I do not know anything about you, so a judgment made by myself would be no doubt grossly inaccurate.

Referring to the act of unintentionally intoxicated oneself as an "accident" may have been a poor choice of words on my part. Let me clarify. There are people who, with the full intention of only having that one beer, decide to start drinking. Sometimes though they decide they can tolerate more and drink one more beer. These people are still in control of their actions, but have fooled themselves that their self-control is greater than it really is. After this process repeats itself (they decide to drink more and more), those people who did not intend to drink that much originally, now have become completely drunk. Let us suppose those same people decide to take a drive, for whatever reason. You know where this is going. The odds are very good at that point that somebody is going to wind up with a serious injury due to an auto accident, or even a death could occur.

At the risk of this sounding like a slippery slope, I recognize that such a series of events does not occur all time, and in fact the one I described probably happens less often than not. However, it does happen. That is what I meant by people "accidently" getting drunk, and if I was not clear before, then I apologize for the confusion.

You may be able to control your alcohol intake. I know people who do, so I do not necessarily doubt you. However, what you refer to as my "shortcoming" is far from that. It is the way I live my life, a way I am happy with. I view it as a solemn responsibility on my part. A responsibility to myself, my family, and society. A responsibility to be in control of my actions at all times.

You are pointing out that you don't feel you have the self control to prevent yourself from getting drunk if you tried alcohol.

Don't project your own shortcomings onto others.

I think I've already said that earlier, but it is not the only reason I abstain.

As for projecting my responsibilities on to others, there many people who have a problem with alcohol. That fact is generally undisputed. Personally, I believe those with such a problem would be better off if they abstained.

I'm surprised Pingfah didn't pick up on this (perhaps it was the drink :D). Meat T deliberately changed the crucial word 'shortcomings' to 'responsibilities' which is a) a complete red herring and b) very klever.

I did not realize I had changed the words myself. An interesting discovery you have made.

I guess I just gave away my drinking habits. :p Its ok though, I'm a sailor. Large quantities of straight rum are like a tradition, nay, a requirement for us!

To ease the pain of not being with my Timby, I've dipped into the Johnnie Walker Black. special occasions warrant it.

Oops. Accidentally hit a response when that isn't what I wanted.:p Oh well.

I drink occassionally during the week, but if I do drink it is usually on the weekends. have to get up early and take kids to school so don't want to be hung over or still drunk.:rommie:

Re: We Don't Drink To Get Drunk, We Get Drunk To Fall Down...

Special occasions. Usually not even beyond one or two. Last time I got drunk was 3 years ago, when being cheated on. Ah, such fond memories. Before that, another few years. An absolutely pirate drunk on rum, literally spun into the floor and could not get up. That was a good one. But the reason I don't drink is because it makes me sick, or sleepy. 2 beers at a party, and I'm falling asleep on the couch. Also dehydrates me more than others it seems.
I also have a tannin sensitivity, which I previous thought was sulfites, but it's the tannin in red wine. Gives me the mother of all headaches.

I haven't drunk alcohol, and doubt I ever will. I've never really understood the point. (I do eat large quantities of red grapes, so the health benefits of red wine would be negligible.)

Both my grandfather and my father were alcoholics (though my father stopped drinking before his 21st birthday, he'd very clearly determined he was such in the 3 years during which he did drink), which is an extra deterrent (though I seem to have inherited more of my mother's brain chemistry).

Wow, how the times change
Before I would have answered multiple times daily
But now, I am mostly a weekender :D

I do not miss the hangovers :D
