NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

Your guys had better beat UCLA Digits. If Oregon State backs into the Rose Bowl because USC loses, I'm gonna be pissed.

Well, nothing is certain.

Having said that, USC's defense is unreal. Absolutely unreal.

Notre Dame stats in the first half: 0 points, 0 first downs, 9 yards of total offense.

I've got my reservations for Pasadena, so I'll keep my fingers crossed next week. A Rose Bowl against Penn State will be epic.

:techman:

USC beat up Notre Dame, so everything is all right with the world for the moment.

I have mixed feeling about the Oregon State loss. While a USC-Penn State Rose Bowl is a good game, a USC vs Texas or Oklahoma in Fiesta Bowl may have been even better.

O-State runs the kick off back for a touchdown and OU goes down the field in 20 seconds--again. Took 4 or 5 whole plays.

:brickwall: Bradford simply won't make that mistake. One mistake. One bit of luck. One wildly tipped ball that goes O-State's way. It won't happen. I've seen it too many times. It doesn't matter if we score. We cannot stop them.

Agreed.

I think USC/Penn State will be a great match-up. Plus I just love the Rose Bowl. I grew up 3 miles from there.

Besides, I never want to see Texas again as long as I live.

Of all the QB's (Bradford, McCoy, Harrell, Tebow and others) I've watched this season, Bradford seems to be the most NFL ready. Harrell may be a senior, but that wild spread offense he runs for Texas Tech ... it will be interesting to see what teams want to try him out.

For crying out loud, Oklahoma State, you can't hold them out of the endzone for one last junk touchdown in the remaining seconds. That's not what elite programs that can reach 10 wins a season do. When are you ever going to get over that hump? People will see the score and not realize how close it was until late in the fourth quarter.

Bradford will be the number one pick in the draft. I guarantee it.

Right now, my Heisman short list for NY is:

1.) Sam Bradford (Oklahoma)
2.) Colt McCoy (Texas)
3.) Tim Tebow (Florida)
4.) Graham Harrell (Texas Tech)

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending November 29th, 2008

1 – Alabama (12-0)

I think Florida's gonna kick their ass.

2 – Oklahoma (11-1)

I've stayed with the Longhorns based on head-to-head, but unfortunately that's no longer justified, in that OU has played a more impressive schedule than UT. Whuppin' Cincinnati and Texas Christian, coupled with their run through the Big 12, is enough to put them over the top. This final win over OSU gives the Sooners five quality wins, to only four for Texas. Sorry, Longhorns fans: Oklahoma is the better team, based on what we saw on the field. You've got to hope now that Missouri comes through for you, unlikely though that is.

3 – Texas (11-1)

"But we beat them" is a great argument. It's just not a convincing one, ultimately. It reminds me of the season Notre Dame bitched up a storm when they finished number two to an FSU team they'd edged earlier in the year. Problem was that the Irish had gone out the next week and lost to Boston College. The logic was unassailable: The Seminoles had lost to a great Notre Dame squad, while Holtz's boys had dropped one to a good Eagles crew. Based on the body of work, FSU was the better team. Same principle absolutely applies here.

4 – Florida (11-1)

The Gators can make a case for number one if they beat 'Bama.

5 – Utah (12-0)

Yet another Utes team will be shut out of a national championship shot.

6 – Southern California (10-1)

So much for Notre Dame having a chance. My bad.

7 – Texas Tech (11-1)

Harrell's looked human for two weeks now.

8 – Boise State (12-0)

The blue tux is pressed ... but the phone ain't gonna ring.

9 – Penn State (11-1)

Joe Pa may yet figure out how to coach from beyond the grave.

10 – Ohio State (10-2)

These guys DO NOT deserve a BCS bid over Boise State, but they're gonna get one. What a travesty.

11 – Ball State (12-0)

Frankly, I'd rather see the 13-0 Cardinals in a BCS bowl than the Buckeyes.

12 – Oklahoma State (9-3)

I'll say it here first: The best three-loss team in the country.

13 – Texas Christian (10-2)

They too held Oklahoma to 35 points.

14 – Cincinnati (10-2)

They did not.

15 – Georgia Tech (9-3)

They ran all over supposedly formidable UGA. Quite enjoyable.

16 – Oregon (9-3)

And they had their way with supposedly formidable OSU. The Beavers, I shudder to say, played like p-----s.

17 – Georgia (9-3)

National championship? Hah!

18 – Boston College (9-3)

Flutie's kid is playin' for 'em. Now I really feel old.

19 – Pittsburgh (8-3)

Any team that beats WVU is OK in my book.

20 – Brigham Young (10-2)

They lost the Holy War, but there's always another Crusade next year.

21 – Missouri (9-3)

Losing to Kansas is actually a bit embarrasing.

22 – Michigan State (9-3)

Stop Ringer and you've beaten them.

23 – Ole Miss (8-4)

Sometimes you feel like a Nutt.

24 – Iowa (8-4)

Ruining Penn State's season is something upon which to hang their hats.

25 – Virginia Tech (8-4)

Georgia Tech is better than either them or BC.

Florida is beating up Florida St. VERY convincingly. Score 45-15. The total yardage is something on the order of 2-1. And a large amount of this has been wit Harvin out. No word about the seriousness of the injury.
Little note on Harvin getting hurt, there was a big cheer from the nolies when he went down, classy bunch up there, shame the score wasn't worse.

Oregon is ranked #14 in the coaches poll and #16 in the AP poll, not a bad place to finish the season. This week I get to repay all those USC fans who rooted for the Ducks by cheering on the Trojans. That would probably get Oregon the Holiday Bowl bid against a Big 12 team.

The Ducks are pretty unpredictable. Would've been interesting to see where they'd have ended up with an actual quarterback available.

Well, on the plus side they didn't have any senior QB's this year so all of them will be back. The biggest losses on offense will be RB Jeremiah Johnson and WR Justin Williams, so the offense returns fairly intact next year. The defense though is a different story.

Yeah. I'm actually pretty jazzed for next season. I think Rutgers, despite the loss of Teel and probably Britt, will be even better than they are this year. They lose absolutely no one off a much improved offensive line, have an entire stable of good running backs (none of whom graduate next year), a couple of young passers, freshman and redshirt freshman respectively, who look to have near-infinite potential, a defense that'll plug in for losses rather easily in my opinion, and a very reliable kicking game. I look for them to win ten next year in a depleted conference, and perhaps even reach their first-ever BCS game.

Go Knights!

JM, as a Texas Tech fan, I'm gratified that you took more into account than just the head-to-head game (or 45-35, as Texas fans are repeating over and over along with Mack Brown) in ranking Oklahoma over Texas.

Yes, Texas Tech royally laid an egg in their one loss, and Texas and Oklahoma lost close games, so the Red Raiders don't have an argument for winning the tiebreaker. But it is still a three-way tie, not a two-way tie for the division, and I don't think it's appropriate to treat the Texas-Oklahoma game as if it's the only thing that matters. I really think that Oklahoma deserves to go to the championship game based on their body of work over the whole season (including annihilating a #2 Texas Tech team that beat Texas!) and the fact that they are playing the best football right now.

I want to congratulate the Red Raiders on their best season ever. It feels strange that they went 11-1 and are only headed to the Cotton Bowl, but this was just an incredible year for the Big 12 South division all around (except for Texas A&M). The Red Raiders have nothing to be ashamed of, as far as I'm concerned. :techman:

Frankly, I think Texas Tech wins that game if it's in Lubbock, and puts up a good to great fight on a neutral field, Kolrad. Playing in Norman is like an away game in the City of Dis.

I dislike Oklahoma, and hope that Missouri pulls the upset and ruins their season, but ... for now, they deserve the nod over Texas.

Apparently playing in Lubbock produces a similar effect, though. Good for the goose and all that?

When it comes to picking Oklahoma over Texas, what tipped the scales for me was the way the Sooners convincingly beat up A VERY good Okla. St team in Stillwater. A team that Texas narrowly beat at home. Combined with the sheer firepower of Oklahoma's last four games, that edges out the Texas win over Oklahoma on a neutral site.

Texas Tech really never was able to enter the equation, as unfairly as it sounds, because they lost so badly. On the road or not, the look of that loss this late in the season tended to edge out their last-second win at home over Texas.

I like the SEC's tiebreaker better:

The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games shall be the divisional representative in the SEC Championship Game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the SEC Championship Game.

I greatly prefer the SEC tie breaking system as well. I'd say Texas got jilted...

All the talk is about Oklahoma's matchups with other teams than Texas. Apparently the Red River Rivalry doesn't mean anything.

I dunno, I liked Tech coach Mike Leach's suggestion for the tiebreaker even better: graduation rate!
