Cold hips -- causes???

I ALWAYS have really cold hips... more pronounced on my right side. Does anyone have an idea of what causes this? I thought that it may be a circulation problem since about a year ago I stopped working out and went up from 160lb - 190lb (I'm a 5'10" male) from a very active lifestyle to a completely sedentary one. I'm back into my exercise mode now, but my hips are still always cold even though I get daily activity.

Any ideas/thoughts???????????? This gets very uncomfortable. At times when we go to sleep and my fiance puts her hand on my hip it feels numb. I'm slightly worried :cardie:

diabetes, poor circulation (despite working out - do you smoke, consume caffeine?) is your belt too tight? Parasympathetic nerve condition? Counds a lit like sciatica except for the cold. I have sciatica and I get numb. I suppose the hip/thigh could get cold.

I do not smoke; however, I love diet coke :( As for my belt, I try not to wear it too tight. Is there any particular sensation in my back that I should note for that is symptomatic of sciatica?

My mother was diagnosed with diabetes when she was around 45 (5 years ago)... I hope not :(

No sensation or symptoms for sciatica. Just happens. Especially look for sudden numbness in the thigh when sitting. Get yourself screened for diabetes ASAP. That is, if you have any other risk factors for it. Sciatica is no big deal, just an inconvenience.

^ :( I always hoped I'd escape diabetes... in my immediate family, only my mother has it; however, 5 of her cousins (all sisters) had it...

Doctor's appointment made for tomorrow! :) Let's git 'er done!

I'd never made the diabetes connection... I mean I hope I don't have it, but I'd never considered that a) it runs in the family, b) I get VERY cranky if I haven't eaten, and c) my frigid hips... all of these issues have been with me for at least the last year (except "a" obviously).

some of the greatest men in history have worn pants. Take Rutherford B. Hayes for example, inventor of the pornographer.

I have diabetes...I don't get cold hips.

?

If you drink a lot of Diet Coke, aspartame has also been known to cause nerve and sensory issues.

You should totally follow what I say, too...I'm first year pre-med!

T'Baio, knows everything.

I heard a radio report many years ago that Aspartame was viewed as a godsend for diabetics. Then, over time, more and more diabetics developed blindness that was ultimately traced to Aspartame, which is in diet soft drinks. Once the researchers found that link, they weaned the patients off of the diet drinks laden with Aspartame and their sight returned. It turned out that one of the three components of Aspartame is wood alcohol. Wood alcohol is an ingredient in Prohibition Era bathtub gin.

The report later details how Aspartame is very unstable and will break down into its individual components when the food item is stored in temps in excess of 40ºF. Think of truck full of sodas being ferried around on a hot summer day.

Sorbitol can lead to cataracts and neuropathy in diabetics, though I haven't heard of aspartame. The confusion may come from the two sometimes being combined as sweeteners, but I've never heard of them being combined in diet soft drinks.

Aspartame, however, under certain circumstances, can indeed break down into methanol, and even formeldahyde. Aspartame was originally rejected FDA approval for many, many years. That is, until Ronald Reagan came to power, appointed a new FDA commissioner, and Searle's (the company at the time that wanted to produce aspartame) CEO, Donald Rumsfeld...yes, that Donald Rumsfeld...immediately reapplied under the new administration and had the approval granted.

Aspartame...is bad. Avoid it at all costs.

Thanks for the clarification *AND* the education. After all, ketchup is a vegetable, right? ;)

I avoid diet drinks at all costs anyway.

So, what kind of doctor are you going to be?

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure yet. I'm doing psychology as my pre-med undergrad, but don't want to be a psychiatrist. Not sure about my specialization. I think I'd just like to be a family GP, as they are desperately needed where I am in Ontario, Canada, and the government has policy changes planned that might give me huge deals on my education if I stay in Ontario as a General Practitioner.

But that's far in the future, I have a long time to figure it out. ;)
