The Psi Phi collection thread for favourite characters and scenes

For Best Scene, I'd also nominate...

the Shakaar cell's freeing the Gallitep workers.

Donnie

Too true. But I decided to play it safe since the novel actually describes what happens in detail, and I didn't want someone coming along who didn't know the history as well as I and feeling I'd blown something.

I just read that scene in the book, and it was defintely pretty cool. Scenes like that expand on events referenced in the show, like the one above, have definitely been one of my favorite parts of the Terok Nor trilogy so far.

For Best Scene:

Scotty, Sisko, and Worf drink Scotch together, from Myriad Universes: Echoes and Refractions: A Gutted World

I tend to enjoy small character moments or brief "aha!" scenes in my Star Trek reading. Two that come to mind are McCoy's argument that he and everyone who went through the transporter are in fact dead from James Blish's Spock Must Die, and the moment when the new voice of the computer switches on in Peter David's The Rift.

McCoy's argument that he and everyone who went through the transporter are in fact dead from James Blish's Spock Must Die,
That's actually one of my favorite moments in Trek lit, too....

Having said that, this thread is for scenes and characters from the 2008 books so that folks can nominate them for the Psi Phi Awards next year. Since those two scenes are from books that came out in 1970 and 1991... :D

Picky, picky...

And given that it's now late November and we've yet to see the planned combined 2006/2007 Psi Phi Awards, I'm not terribly optimistic about seeing them for the 2008 books, either... :(

^It was a combined 2005/2006 awards that were done last year, so it's just 2007 that's still outstanding. A bunch of boring stuff delayed this year's voting so far that I'm trying to decide now whether it's smarter just to combine things again and do 2007/2008 in a couple months. But the Psi Phis are absolutely NOT. DEAD.

PsiPhi will live as long as there is Trek!!!! ... I hope. :)

I'm new to the PsiPhi awards (not that it seems that complicated) but for the "official" submissions- do we just email David as PsiPhi with our choice of fav. scene and new character from an ST book published in 2007 (and maybe 2008?)

The suggestions for character and scene in 2007 were collected earlier this year and have been finalized. The suggestions for 2008 aren't being formally collected yet; once we're ready for them I'll post an e-mail address where people can send them. And I'll count the ones posted in this thread, of course.

David isn't formally involved in the Psi Phi Awards; questions about them can be addressed to me. :)

Boooo! I've missed suggesting then!! Blarg...

Will there be an open vote for the suggestions, or do you gather that based on how many people suggested the same thing? I'm sure someone nominated what I'd pick since I'm usually obvious... then again... with Star Trek... LOL!!

And thanks- I don't mind harassing you instead of David... :p
(joking, joking... :) )

I have not been good about posting picks in this thread. I promise that I liked the latter half of 2008's books. From Lost Souls:

The transformation of the Borg Collective

New character: Inyx

For best scene...I nominate from Night of the Wolves...

Miras Vara has an Orb encounter on Cardassia Prime and becomes the new Astraea, the Oralian Guide.

I literally cheered out loud when I read that, especially after what happened in Day of the Vipers. If that's not a moment of hope reborn, I don't know what else is! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

For favorite character...I agree with the nomination for Miras Vara--but I also want to nominate Bennek.

Poor guy deserves SOME kind of honor after all the hell he went through!!!

So when do you guys do the awards? Will they be soon or do you wait to later in the year?

I hope to have the voting in March and/or April, with the awards announced by early May. But then I once hoped to do the awards for 2007 in 2008, so all I can really say is "Stay tuned."

Best scene:

Inyx asks Hernandez not to let herself die.

Pretty easily my favorite treklit moment of the past couple of years.

I also second the nomination of Inyx as best new character.
