The Ensigns of Command

It's that one where that guy keeps saying "MY Father/Grandfather....Is Buried On That Mountain!!!!"

A great episode for Data! He gets a kiss, learns to problem solve, and his first solo mission went a lot better than Spock's in Galileo 7!

Yeah, that became quite an in-joke among the other colonists, who had heard it so often that they finished the line whenever the crybaby Goshevan started to whine "My Grandfather . . . ". ;)

Anyone miss how, whenever people got shot with a phaser, they glowed for a few seconds afterward? That was awesome. This was actually the first Star Trek episode i ever saw.

I remember the show for that Goshevan guy. It seemed like his voice was dubbed or something. Maybe he was just a bad actor.

i barely remember this episode. Apparently, the 15,000+ colonists were evacuated.

How, exactly? Did they all cram onto the E-D (or suspend in the transporter!) or were we left to assume that transport ships would be along to aide in the evac process??

I assume the latter, given all their personables that they needed to bring along

IIRC, there was some contract dispute with the actor after filming was completed. Rather than re-film everything, they dubbed over all of his lines. (I know, I know - they recorded the series on videotape, not film. Work with me here.) A good episode overall.

Forgive my ignorance, though: why is it called "The Ensigns of Command??" I'm obviously missing something.

There were transport ships on the way to carry out the evacuation, but they weren't going to be there for three weeks. This was the point of Picard having to find a way to stall the Sheliaks.

It's from a poem by John Quincey Adams; 'ensign', as in 'insignia', a symbol:

I want the seals of power and place,
The ensigns of command;
Charged by the People's unbought grace
To rule my native land.
Nor crown nor sceptre would I ask
But from my country's will,
By day, by night, to ply the task
Her cup of bliss to fill.
