Babylon 5

Hi all! ive been contemplating getting Babylon 5 for awhile and i think i might go for it. every thread ive read theres always people gushing about the show, and i think i should check it out, so my question is this: is it worth a blind buy? thanks!! :bolian:

Go to Hulu.com first. They have seasons 1 and 2 there for free. You should be able to gauge whether or not you like the show based on that.

Well, I guess it's a matter of personal taste in the end, but I went blind into season 1 a few years ago with the dvds and I didn't stop till I saw all the seasons, movies, and the spin off.

To cut what could be a long story short, if you're interested in a well thought out intelligent five year long sci fi story with elements of politics, action and typical sci fi themes then go for it. The series will not disappoint you. Whether you want to check out the movies and the spin off afterwards depends on whether you want to see more B5 even if it is of a more stand alone nature than the series was. (Exceptions to the stand alone quality of the movies are The Gathering which is the pilot movie and which you should watch before season 1 and In The Beginning which is a prequel movie, but which you better not watch before finishing the series.)

It takes a while to get going, stick with it. Once it does the payoff is worthwhile.

I don't know if I would ever blind buy anything...especially a TV show...you could either do Hulu as another has suggested, or easily get them on Netflix.

That's how I first watched them, and then rushed out and purchased.

I was about to make that same recommendation. As much as I love the show (it is arguably my all-time favorite), money is such that don't think I could drop too many ducats on such a purchase without knowing far more about it.

Even so, follow Lindley's advice. It does start out slowly but understand that you're going to be watchign a sort of book for TV.

Also refer to sites such as The Lurker's Guide To Babylon 5 for a good non-spoilery reference place.

Oh, I blind-buy things all the time. Makes my wife crazy

But it's how I got into Alias, and how I sample animes.

If you can get it cheap I would go for it, If not do as the other people suggested, Its slow going at first but once it gets going its excellent and I bet you become your hooked, Seasons Three and Four are the best but you couldn't just jump half way through, watch it in the order suggested on the lurkers guide and you wont be dissapointed.

I still rate it as the best Sci Fi I have seen!

The first sentence is absolutely true. The second is personal opinion. Star Trek is slightly better.

That said, Babylon 5 is more realistic in it's portrayal of humans, and that's one thing I've always loved about it.

I say buy them. You're in for a good time.

Opinions ... gotta love 'em!

Suffice it to say you're both ...... not exactly right. ;)

What are you talking about?? I'm ALWAYS right!

Except when I'm wrong. Then of course, I'm right twice.

Yeah, you thought you made a mistake once but that was a mistake, right? ;)

B5 is for people who can pay attention. Don't try to watch it if you're going to be other things at the same time. It's not that it's too convoluted and you'll lose track of anything, it's that they paid so much attention to detail in writing and making it that your attention will be richly rewarded in future episodes when you appreciate how things were set up earlier.

Ah...I envy you the first time...

PS: for those interested, Amazon.com has the Crusade DVD set on sale for $12.99 right now.

I keep waiting for them to have the "Babylon 5" sets on sale like that. I need to get a "backup set", as my daughter & I play my originals so much.

Yes, that's what I'm after, and that is a good price (about $99 American?). But the problem is they're R2, and my player is not multiregional

Sorry for going off topic a bit but has anybody read any of the B5 novels, are they worth a read?

I did just order myself another set but what I really need to do is set up an alternative method of storing the disks because the holders have almost all detached from the covers.

Anybody going to do a nostalgia watching of 'Sleeping in Light' on Tuesday to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of it airing?

Yes, I believe they are, or at least most of them are. There's a nice thread about them going on right here. I found that by using the babylon 5 tag at the bottom of the first page. No worries about asking in this thread, but that thread will really fill you in on what you want to know I'm sure.

Oh definitely! As I said in the DS9 thread, that first airing was special for me in a couple of ways. The next day was Thanksgiving Day. We watched the episode that Wed. night, and then inexplicably the next morning ... I woke up before the sun had come up, something I hadn't done in a VERY long time. Hadn't planned it. Didn't set the alarm for it. In truth, I'd rather have slept in. So....... I got up, fixed a cup of tea, and went out onto the deck to watch the sun come up.

Ok Thanks for the link, I am still finding my way about about the forum, that tag cloud is a neat idea :)
