The arcology idea is fine, where the giant structures are concerned, but I don't think they have anything to do with this large hole in the ground. I do think it looks like a quarry, and if one in Iowa in the area described by Batnam below, it's most likely for quarrying limestone, which would match quite well with the characteristics of color, pit shape and apparent method of removal we see evident in the screencaps. So whats up with the this mined area? Anyone know?

Well, any attempt to construct the arcologies in the back would require alot of raw materials, at least in the early years of construction before more advanced materials and tech was developed.
It's more than possible that Mines like that are a result of such massive construction projects.
However, I think that that wasn't a mine so much as it was the preliminary excavation before one is built. As an arcology requires a deep "basement" if you will, with the base built on bedrock and there being many levels of Industrial and Power generation plants under ground with the towers containing the comerical and residential areas, it is a logical standpoint.
Also, with the population, and comerical and industrial industries located in the arcologies, and with the possiability of mass transit being primarily located underground, it explains the "farm wasteland" of the areas inbetween, the lack of established (and nature unfriendly) paved roads.
At least, that's my theory. JJ and the crew behind it seem to be tapping into many fields of future design, science, and other concepts that GR liked and even included in his TMP novelization, but never touched on screen.
I'm sure TGT could go more into the details of the "future earth" as envisioned by GR and the production for phase II/TMP.
I live in Muscatine, Iowa. Coincidentally, about 30 miles from the town James T. Kirk will be born in. Riverside, Iowa. About 15 miles north of me is a quarry, very similar to the one in the trailer. It is about 5 miles north of a town called Buffalo. The quarry sits along side the Mississippi river. So..... even though this is set in the future, it's still a good representation of this part of Iowa. I will take pictures of this quarry to share. Iowa is not just corn and dirt like most people think. But, I don't blame people for thinking so. To bad they didn't film in Riverside, but I understand why. Not much there.
I'm pretty sure you're correct.^The second word after "open" might be "quarry."
Possibly... But Kirk's TAS ship had vast shirtsleeves-accessible spaces inside the nacelles, too, and windows on the engine pylons. Perhaps the Kelvin's main engineering is inside the front part of her nacelle, with the warp coils inside the rear part?

Does the Kelvin's lower Nacell have windows???
BTW: This is a shot looking at it from the rear as it passes by the camera.
So the 'Windows??' would be at the front of the Nacell.
