Unresolved Trek trailer questions

that the central plank of Star Trek, a message of optimism and humanity carried by protagonists who are a better breed of human being.

In short, no matter what revisions are made to the rest of it, I hope Star Trek doesn't lose it's soul. It'll be interesting to see if we hear anything else before the movie premieres that clues us in to whether the franchise is safe in the hands of its new masters.

TOS was never about a "better breed of human beings". That's a Modern Trek concept - and a poor one, just like the idea that Vulcans have "evolved" structures that suppress their emotions rather than exerting emotional control through personal effort. TOS was about human beings who, through great struggle and effort, most of the time manage to overcome their baser instincts.

"Yes, we are savages. But I'm not going to kill today." - James T. Kirk

Indeed. GR's reboot in '87 has taken hold firmly in most people's minds.

It's one of the things that later writers commented on - that GR kept trying to take the conflict out of their writing. I have it in a book here somewhere....

Indeed, it was a well spoken of issue, apparently, during the first two seasons of TNG. And was "fixed" by the third season with the "retirement" of GR and the bringing on of Piller as head writer.

And indeed, GR pissed in his own Cherrios right at the start of TNG ("Encounter at Farpoint") when we learn mankind didn't overcome his nuclear demons and there was a WWIII which almost destroyed us.
Part of the attraction of TOS, in the midst of the Cold War, was it showed a world that made it through that era when in reality we weren't sure we would. (Trek's Eugenics War notwitstanding. ;) )
We didn't poison our Earth until it was almost uninhabitable, or kill off so many of us that we nearly made ourselves extinct. In the late 1960s and early 1970s (in syndication) it was nice little world to crawl into for a while. Later, the idea became quaint. But in today's world, people may again enjoy escaping into such a place for a while.

Wow. So not clouds. I am a retard.

Yeah, they're clearly buildings in the good-quality version:

I think this movie will be better than the last 10 years of "Star Trek"

As would a hernia.

TGT

Or massive hemmorhoids.

Or a fork in the eye.

In other words, it needs to be as good as DS9's last four seasons, TNG's 3rd and 4th season and/ or TOS's 2nd season (I won't expect anything to be as good as TOS's 1st season) before I'll believe that Trek is Back (TM), no matter how hyped hopeful fans are from a pretty, shiny trailer.

Call me a cynic, but we've got to have standards.

I'm thinking the cop is just wearing some Iron Man-style mask that displays all kinds of readouts and info inside.

Although I wouldn't be horribly upset if it turns out to be an android. If they can build giant starships and develop warp drive and transporter technology in that time, surely they'd be able to create an android cop.

I would guess that it's an android. If for no other reason that Earth is supposedly a crime-free paradise, so why would they need so many cops anyway? If they must have them, just send some robots out.

As for the girl that Kirk is banging: AFAIK, it's an Orion Slave Girl. We know there's one in the cast...

Horseshit. You went out on a limb and defended your posts with honor. Don't let the goon squads take that away from you.

Even if you were wrong.

Wow. And SO wrong. Like ... how could you BE that wrong and still be smart enough to respire? Ooops! Sorry, lost it for a moment. Guess I'm part of the goon squad.

I look forward to you trying to maintain that confidence when the HD screen shots start to appear.
They're just unusual clouds to make the scene look artsy. I can't believe that there's this much discussion over clouds. I can see the Enterprise if I stare at this photo long enough.

Except that the "clouds" in the trailer have very clear, rigid geometric lines and corners.

That would probably be the Third World War that Spock mentioned in "Bread And Circuses." So it wasn't an invention for TNG.

How did young James drop the convertible top on the Vette while driving it at 80+ MPH?? The pursuit starts out with the white convertible top up but soon the top is down, not something you can do in a mid 60s Vette.

Also, where is the music from? It sounds familiar.
