Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords - Best of NuWho?

All three eps. got progressly better and the finale was incredible,
I'd say it's the complete opposite for me. I loved Utopia, found TSoD to be fairly entertaining, and loathed LoTL. Though I think Fear Her is the worst episode on a techincal standpoint, I rank LoTL as my least favorite episode because it squandered so much potential.

Or, to paraphrase Roger Ebert, "I hated, hated, hated this episode!"

I thought The Last of The Time Lords more than exceeded it's potential, it was a very Shakespearan storyline, complete with the Master's Richard The Third act, his death and flaming burial.

Nah that wasn't Shakespeare, that was Geroge Lucus :p

It's Lucas and I think you've gotten hung up on one scene the finale was cetainly more than just one scene. The Master's pathos and death were certainly Shakespearan in nature.

Does nobody have a sense of humour anymore? Jeez I didn't even mention the Flash Gordon or Harry Potter bits!

If it was shaklespearean then it was Shakespeare lite.

I just finished rewatching these episodes, and I got to say, these are perhaps the best episodes of Doctor Who I have seen. Though I've only been watching since it returned in 05, so I don't know what I might have missed prior.

But really for the most part, these episodes make for some of the most perfect television I can think of. Everything from the story and the way it unfolds, John Simm's performance as the Master, the awesome musical score (most notably the amazing Gallifrey theme) make for an excellent presentation. Okay, the way things are resolved at the end of Last of the Time Lords is a bit of a cop-out, but in light of the pure awesomeness of everything else, this can be forgiven.

So, do you all agree? Is this not the best Doctor Who produced during the new series? And for those who have watched the classic series, how do you think it ranks with their best episodes?

Certainly the period from the last 15 minutes of Utopia through to the first ten minutes of LotTL is the best. Sadly, once, Dobby the House-Doctor shows up then the rest of that episode is far more variable...

Utopia os my favorite Dr. Who episode. The soundtrack alone blows all others away.

The soundtrack is too fucking loud, it blew me away, as in, off my chair :p

The soundtrack is as essential an element to that episode (and the next two -- Murray Gold produced a frickin' symphony for television) as the dialogue. And its volume was fucking perfect

I hold season three as the best yet of NuWho. I feel that the other seasons have their good episodes (usually by Moffat), but I felt season three had a larger majority of outstanding episodes.

No.... Sir Derek Jacobi is the best Master ever. ;)
only in terms of %, sure he was 100% brilliant as the Master for 30 seconds, but that isnt enough.

Fair enough. But I believe in leaving the audience wanting more. ;)

John Simm gave me all I ever wanted. I never cared much for The Master as a character before. He was always too much of a cheesy Count Dracula-esque, moustache-twirler to me. Simm was probably the closest we will ever see to a live action interpretation of Mark Hamill's The Joker from Batman: TAS right down to his Harley Quinn-esque sidekick . Seeing someone that equally suave, bastardly, and outrageously hilarious isn't something easily done. I didn't even recognize him as Sam Tyler until later.

Yeah I don't know, I wonder if I was a bit out of sorts watching that one, I've heard people complain about music volume in Who before and its never bothered me. I should probably rewatch it.

"Last of the Time Lords" had the annoying gimmick of setting things a year later, brushing over the Master's tyranical rule of Earth and how his prisoners coped onboard the Valiant.

Since the year was erased for everybody but those on the Valiant, what difference does it make?
