Speculations on McGillion's role

One of the more hush-hush aspects of Team Abrams' project has been what role Paul McGillion plays. Although I suspect it will probably be a brief role, I also suspect it will at least be slightly important. In other words, I don't expect him to be a redshirt.

So it occurred to me the other day that there were two potential possibilities: He could play either the first officer serving on the U.S.S. Kelvin, or he could be Pike's first officer. Since there is no listing for a female 'Number One' in the cast, it seems that particular bit of Trek lore is being overlooked, which means anyone could be Pike's XO. Personally, I think this would be a good role for McGillion.

The other possibility is that he could be Scotty's father, serving on the Kelvin along with Kirk's father. That could be an interesting touch of irony.

Having McGillion play Mitchell isn't a bad idea, but nothing I've read seems to indicate that the character has been included. The more I think about it, I really think it'll turn out that Paul is the Kelvin's XO, and he could likely be Scotty's dad.

Of course tomorrow, Paramount could release a full cast listing and this idea of mine will be blown out of the water.

McGillion's going to play Q, and right at the end he'll appear onscreen and say directly to the audience "Had'ja going there for a while, didn't I?"

At this point Pine, Quinto, and all will remain onscreen, but their Enterprise will transform into one that looks much more like the one we knew, inside and out, and the credits will roll. :D

He will play Captain April, who works for the shipyard and will be the temporary Captain of the Enterprise for a short "Shakedown Cruise" only, right before handing it over to Captain Pike.

Since Scotty is picked up after the launch of the Enterprise perhaps he is the chief engineer until the end of the movie.

Apparently George Kirk is the first officer of the Kelvin, but it would be awesome to see Paul as the engineer of THAT ship! :techman:

He'll play the guy who tells the crew what they can and cannot say or do. He's going to be Officer Canon.

That works, yeah. Or maybe April is just the chief engineer in charge of construction or something.

Or, maybe he's assigned to be the first Captain but falls down an unfinished turbolift shaft and goes "splat."

:guffaw: You realize you've triggered mass suicides (ok, perhaps not "mass").

Well, though, several of those options preserve April's status as "first Captain" thus finally establishing the character in canon - if not satisfying the Trek Orthodoxy.

Come on guys leave April alone, he's one of the most forgotten captains in trek. I mean when they came up with is picture it was just Roddenberry in a Star Fleet Uniform. Never caught a break from the get go.

Well...if we are going to canonize the TAS episode The Couterclock Incident (otherwise, why else would be discussing the existence of Robert April), then he is still alive and well in that Episode.

I suppose he could have been injured in the turboshaft enough to need to hand over the ship to Pike, but eventually healed.

No.
In Trek XI we'll get the first view of the Enterprise's redesigned toilets.
And Robert April will be captain of the cleaning team.
