New ST:XI trailer

Damned Abrams for launching the Enterprise from the ground.
We haven't seen it launch from the ground, nor heard of any scene in which that occurs.

You're right. I bet they try to launch it from the ground, the nacelles break off, then the yard master says something like, "I told those jackasses we shoulda built it in space!"

Oops, sorry did not now we were being picky about youtube links to the trailer, does not make sense though, since trekbbs threads are littered with links to all sorts of copywriten material on youtube, but i guess in regards to this film this site wants to play nice so they dont lose there news links on startrek.com or something, got to love the politics of it all ...:)

Indeed.

So instead please enjoy a trailer for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, featuring a voiceover by Orson Welles:

Actually watching this and seeing the brief shot of McCoy makes me see quite a resemblance with Karl Urban 's McCoy

Just watched the crappy version of the trailer ... getting more excited about it. Hopefully it will be shown here with QoS.

I thought it was trite, especially Kirk jumping from the car in slow-mo. I was half-expecting to hear Berlin's Take my Breath Away playing as he drove.

Mind you -- as I said, I thought the rest of the trailer looked great. I do understand the desire by the creative team to connect Star Trek with our familiar world, but I just wish they didn't do it be using a scene that looks like it came straight out of a bad 1980s action flick.

I don't know, to me it looked like the kind of sexy and stylishly shot scene you'd find in one of today's Bond movies. It's not like slo-mo car chases went out of style in the 80s.

My only problem with the scene is the way Kirk somehow travels slower than the car once he jumps out. So much for the laws of physics. lol

He positions the car sideways, driver's side facing safety, and accelerates his body in the opposite direction ever so slightly in leaping out, cancelling out a very small part of his 80 mph speed toward the cliff. But this still means he stops his, say, 75 mph trip over the edge with nothing but his fingertips. So you're right... physics-wise, it's BS.

This is where the concept of "suspension of disbelief" comes in. Well, here and in the whole, FTL spacecraft, matter transportation, sentient alien lifeforms part.

Just saw the trailer. This movie looks like a giant steaming pile of garbage. I had high hopes for it. I really was looking forward to it. Then I saw it. In a desperate attempt to appeal to a wider audience J.J.Abrhams has destroyed what is Star Trek, instead he is going to turn it to just another one of these shitty hollywood movies about explosions and fucking. I'm going to miss you Star Trek, I really am. Instead of being about a hope for a brighter future you will be about a hope for a sexy explosion filled future. Everything Star Trek stood for in the past, is now being blown to bits just like all the stupid fucking explosions that are going to happen in this movie just to appeal to the 13 year old kids. I'm going to ask you, fans of the old star trek, is this really worth it?

I'm going to have to disagree with this. It's clear from the trailer that it's about Kirk and Spock, who they are before they meet, and who they become.

The rest of it is window dressing.

You're right.
I usually am. :)

...cancelling out a very small part of his 80 mph speed toward the cliff. But this still means he stops his, say, 75 mph trip over the edge with nothing but his fingertips.
And the friction of his body dragging across the ground, and his initial impact. Probably dug his toes in too. Implausible still? Yes, but less so than if he'd done it merely with his fingernails.

Star Trek has always played fast and lose with the laws of physics. They're simply adhering to canon!

Is it just me, or is there a glimpse of the new transporter effect...the first shot of Quinto in his uniform...looks like a swirly white bit there. I'm thinking transporter.

You saw correctly. Spock beaming in somewhere.

I'm also hoping that somehow that too-serious young Kirk that was mentioned in TOS will still be respected in canon. I like the notion that Kirk was not a hell-raiser or a partyer when young, and only when he started to achieve things in life did he loosen up and get that stick outta his ass. :rommie:

I think a lot of people consider that unrealistic (opposed to the other way round). I thought so too until it happened to myself!

I wanted to wait but finally broke down around midnight. Damn you, YouTube!! Anyway, I have the sense that I'm going to love this movie up and down and all around the town. Just wish it wasn't so damn far away :D

Star Trek's cool again! Pay attention, nerds!

The TNG episode "Relics" is good because it cofronts this issue head on: People can become relics, not just inanimate objects.

And evidently a fair number of fans. ("Uh oh! A girl in a BRA! Shield my eyes, Mommy!")

I saw the trailer without knowing what the hell it was until the kid gave his name. I think this is exactly the kind of hook the FRANCHISE needs to replace all the fans bolting because Ford Mustangs are still as cool in the future as they were when they were first offered. I'm looking forward to gauging the audience's reaction since the reaction here was so predictable.

Bottom line for me: Nothing I've seen is discouraging me from seeing this movie opening weekend. If anything I'm embracing the change even more.
