Mr. Orci gave me some examples from past Treks which give some precedence( I don't know if I spelled that right) for what is happening with this movie.
Here is his exact post to me:

And he's got a point. I can think of several other episodes in the Trek canon where the timeline is altered in some way.
I'm not entirely convinced to part with $8.50, but I will say that I'm a little less hellbent against this movie. I'll need to hear more about it.

I sent him a reply asking if we'll get an explanation on why the Enterprise looks different. I wasn't looking for spoilers, just a simple yes or no question.

Matt, I told you before that I hope you find your answers. I'm glad to see it is happening. Either way I still wish you peace.

I read an article someone did on Tom Green years ago where he paid for movie tickets for him and the reporter then, as if he felt guilty, went back to the box office and made some excuse to get a refund and snuck back into the theatre.

That's £17.50 for me and my wife, that's nearly $26 so no more complaining about ticket prices where you live.

I live in Edinburgh god knows how much London ticket prices are nowadays.

Kurtzman and/or Orci said this once before, back in January when the teaser came out. However, I haven't heard anything like this since then, so I started to believe that there really was no in-universe reason, and the only "reason" the ship looks different was simply because they were "changing the look" (and, by the way, I was OK with that.)

This new information seems like a re-affirmation of the original "in-universe" reason for the change in look.

How do they explain the fact that the crew is now all magically the same age? How does THAT work?

I'd honestly give this movie more of a shot if they would just have the balls to admit it is a reboot. I'm not opposed to a reboot. I even think Trek NEEDS a reboot. But this whole is it or isn't it a reboot debate annoys me.

Orci insists it isn't, yet Abrams says it is. For me, this movie will only work if I forget every other Trek I've seen. That's hard to do when Orci (who is the only "real" Trekker on this film's staff) keeps insisting it fits into continuity.

Neither Orci nor Abrams have insisted anything. Both say that this will honor the continuity of the Trek universe while adding something completely new. Neither have said reboot. Why is that so hard for some of you to accept?

Abrams HAS said it's a reboot. Tasked, I can't of course find it now-- he didn't use that term specifically, but he was very clear about going in his own direction and not worrying too much about canon.

Again, I have no problem with that. My problem, and what I can't "accept" is that it is wishy washy. It's all marketing. They want a reboot, but the want to keep fans so they are afraid to say reboot.

In my mind, you either start fresh and clean, or you work with what is concretely established. The problem is that if this movie IS canon, it's taking liberties that cannot be explained, no matter what Orci says. (Again, I bring up the relative ages of the crew.). If it ISN'T canon, they need to stop pretending it is. I honestly feel like they are afraid to admit outright that it is a reboot.

Will it be different? Sure -- I expect it to be different. I never once thought it would be a continuation (artistically and dramatically) of the original movie franchise.

Does that necessarily mean it will be a re-boot, thus changing the entire factual history of Star Trek and change the personas of the familiar characters? No, not at all (although this is yet to be confirmed or negated).

...and how do we know the characters are all the same age? For example, Pegg is 7 years older than Quinto and 9 years older than Pine -- but that is irrelevant since the actors may be playing older or younger than their actual age (just like Walter Koenig played younger in TOS).

I'm thinking Kirk and Spock are slightly older than Sulu and Uhura, and McCoy and Scotty are older than Kirk and Spock. That fits in with TOS, and it fits in with the "looks" of the actors.

haha.. I really don't want to be THAT kind of Trek-fan... but...

This movie implies that minus Spock and Scotty, they all graduate at the same time, and get assigned to the Enterprise together. All the grown ups die, and they take over as the crew.

TOS first season had Kirk at 31-32, Uhura at 24, Sulu 28, Chevok at 20 and McCoy at 38.

Again, I'm not the nerdy guy here who is crying causes continuity is violated. If the story is great, screw continuity. I just wish that if they want this movie to be canon, they'd they'd really do their homework-- or conversely, if they weren't interested, then to just do what they want and not bother saying it fits.
