FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

where can one obtain the naughty nightwear? and i didn't get far before i had to return it, does this game have an ending ending, or do you finish your Father's work and you can continue in the DC wastes with a non-irradiated Potomic?

I found the nightwear in a dresser in a house at Arlington cemetery. If you're evil, I suppose you could kill one of Dukov's girls as well.

As for having a "real" ending, the problem is that... well, depending on your choices, it's literally impossible to keep playing after the game ends.

hmmm, looks like this wasn't the original version of Fallout 3

and I wonder if this will be either expanded on into a wicked MMO (and a drop of the level limits) or used as a platform for a console Fallout MMO

Not really, there are ways out of it. There are plenty of irradiated people throughout the wastes. This is a science fiction game. There are people in it who survived a nuclear explosion at ground zero. The problem I have with the ending is that Fawke could have done it and no one would have any issue.

Interplay retains the MMO rights and they're throwing the meager resources that they have left to try to make it.

As for the ending, it just makes it less meaningful if you just go around doing stuff after it happens, regardless of whether you are good or evil. I suppose only the neutral ending is the open ended one.

Yes, the alien weapon is great. It will take out a deathclaw in 1-2 shots.

Just FYI, I found a Gatling Laser called the 'Vengeance' in the Deathclaw Sanctuary, in a bloody pool of water. It's pretty sweet.

I have been stalling with finishing the game in favor of exploring all of the unexplored locations on my map (I used the Explorer perk to show all of the Wasteland's locations). I am going to finish the last part tonight, so that I can start CoD5.

I looked for the alien gun in the north of minefield without success. Do you remember where is it?

Here is a map that will help a lot.

Also the ship is pretty big. When I went hunting for it I expected it to be tiny for some reason. You can also use the strength of the alien signal to find out where the ship is.

I think I've pretty much done all the non main quests at this point. I guess it's time to go to the Jefferson memorial and save the world.

Yeah, I found it last night, very handy against Deathclaws. I only have 120 rounds of ammo though, so I think I'll save it for when things get dicey.

Great game, loving it so far, and I'm up to level 16, but I've ditched the main quest after gaining access to the citadel.

Anyway, the thing with the character build, is that a lot of choices seem stupid now.

First of all, never EVER take the perk "Here and now". It gives you a level, but I read it as all the good things of a level rise, i.e. skill points and a perk without level rise, but you actually just rise a level, de facto meaning you've just lost a perk. Since you only get 19, of the chosen ones that is, that's a big deal.
Furthermore, if you're gonna be hardcore gaming, forget all the perks that raise your skills. There's a total of 25 books per skill, and with the "Comprehension" perk, that's a whopping 50 skill points per skill, that you can get without leveling. Puts some strategy into the level 20+ game.
Get the "Educated" perk as well, that's 3 more skill points per level, totalling 54 extra skill points.
And also, there's a bobble-head for every skill, putting the total extra skill points for every skill, not counting the points from perks, at 60 skill points in total!! Sweet!
I'm not sure about the level all the skills start at, but I'm pretty sure this means that you can max almost all the skills in the game, if you do some serious searching.

Considering there's also a bobble-head for every S.P.E.C.I.A.L., you can get away with a lot of interesting perks.
As far as I know, there's two quest-gained perks that raise you S.P.E.C.I.A.L. One for your Endurance, and one for either Strength or Perception, so in combination with the bobble-heads, you should never make your End or Str/Per higher than 8 from the start or by the Intense Training perk.
Furthermore there are several quest-related perks that give you skill points, so try never to max any of your skills be leveling. I did it, and I feel stupid everytime I found the corresponding book. Sigh.

Forget the perk giving you more XP, that's just stupid, you'll get plenty of XP, and that perk'll just shorten the game for you.

The way I see it, a strong way of going is the following:
Must get perks:

Comprehension (2 skill points per book read instead of one)
Educated (+3 skill points at every level)
Silent Running (Movement speed doesn't factor in at enemies' detection when [hidden] - great!)
Strong Back (Lets you carry 50 pounds more, regardless of your strength)

Action Point related invaluable perks:

Action Boy (+25 action points!!)
Grim Reaper's Sprint (If you kill someone in V.A.T.S. all your AP are restored when exiting V.A.T.S.)
Mysterious Stranger (A film noir detective shows up and helps you in V.A.T.S.)

Perks great for shooterbuild-characters:

Bloody Mess (funny death scenes, +5% dmg)
Commando (25% better chance to hit any body part in V.A.T.S. with rifles)
Finesse (5% higher chance to score critical in V.A.T.S.)
Sniper (Increases head shot chance in V.A.T.S. by 25%)
Better Criticals (All criticals do 50% more dmg in V.A.T.S.)

If you want a bad ass killer, take all the perks mentioned above, and top those off with 7x Intense Training and you're a pretty dangerous shot out there. Your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. could end up something like this, counting the two quest-related perks:

Strength 6
Perception 10
Endurance 6
Charisma 6
Intelligence 10
Agility 10
Luck 8

That's the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. of a no-nonsense sniper/shooter who can take just about anyone in V.A.T.S.
Nevermind your "low" endurance, you can always just use Stimpaks, or even Blood Packs after you get that certain quest-related perk.. ;-)

If you go for the Bobble Heads, you really only need to level up to 9 on your stats. With the books, outfits and the Bobble Heads, you can probably get by with getting to 70 with skills and pick up the rest in game.
Silent running is good because it gives you 10 to Sneak while giving that movement bonus. I would also say that the Cyborg perk is worth it as well, but then again I'm in love with the laser rifle. :)

I would argue that a high luck, high intelligence character is better though. I must admit, extra AP is good for agility, but I've been getting so many critical hits that in VATs that it's absolutely hilarious.

Also, remember that the Well Rested perk gives you the same XP bonus and it's absolutely free. It's a must to get a home early into the game.

Damn, forgot about all the Bobble-heads..
Then, that's like 60 skill points for every skill through books and bobble-heads, and it's another 7 points for S.P.E.C.I.A.L.
I think I'll just edit my post above. Haha.

Yeah. The only problem is getting to them early in the game.
In hindsight, I'd do my best to get to 50 lockpicking as soon as possible.

Agree.

Lock picking and hacking are pretty important.

Repair also helps in maxing out your weapons.

Yeah, repair probably makes up for the lack of money in the game, since high quality gear is worth more money.

I think mid range you want to go with sneak, since those sneak crits can be devastating.

Yeah, as I mentioned in earlier posts the vast amount of choices wasn't really my thing but I've gotten used to it pretty quick and I kinda like it now.

I'm not really having an issue with money/caps as I figured out a pretty good system.

I basically sell as much of my found goods as possible.
I notice cigarettes, scorpion venom and some meds brings about a good amount of caps.
If a vendor doesn't have a lot of caps, I first buy a ton of ammo and stem packs from them then sell them all my crap to get my caps back.

I also find it saves a lot of time and money/caps to install the med and chem labs in your lair.

Some tips for new comers is to save all the scrap metal, Pre-war books, Sugar Bombs and Nuka Cola Quantum you can because folks will pay you some serious jack for them.

Try to get the finger/ear perk early as well.

I have yet to find anyone who wants the pre-war money though and I have a ton of it.

And if ya have fun blasting folks, the Bloody Mess perk is off the hook!

I always stock up on pre-war money and darts since you can sell them and they don't weigh anything. That and looting on a cost per pound basis have been my main source of income in the game. I kind of wish investing in shops would have done more than just increase inventory so you'd actually get a cut of the profits. You could even help by clearing trade routes or negotiating free passage or something. Passive money ftw!

Speaking of the mysterious stranger, if you've ever wondered what it would be like to be be as deadly has him, grab a trench coat and type:

player.additem 00050F92 1

It's a game breaker though so I wouldn't keep the gun, it's rediculously powerful. A magnum pistol that shoots .44 ammo and does damage per shot in the thousands.

Well finished the game last night, I liked it.
Sure it had it's glitches but over all I had a lot of fun playing it.
It took me 104 hr.53 min to finish it doing all the quests/side quests that I could find.
The only 2 (achievement wise) quests I didn't do were on the evil side.

I started an evil character last night and it is a lot different game , a lot more people shooting at me now. :guffaw:
