This is JJ's vision - it won't be called the Enterprise - it'll be called something else.

JJ canon applies now and he can trace the lineage of the vessel all the way back to 1998 when it saved the earth from an asteroid.......

The film will open with....

SPACE - it's closer than you think - these are voyages of the Starship Freedom - we have the force of 10,000 nuclear weapons. It happened before. It will happen again. It's just a question of when.

Anyone worried?

Some thoughts:

1. I am not too sure about angry Spock and angry Kirk fighting. It just seems so odd to see that from two characters who were best friends in TOS fighting like that. Of course, it is years before TOS and people forget that Spock is half human, half Vulcan, and I believe that has been mentioned that at the Academy Spock took a while to find himself. I want to see where it goes.
They fought on TOS about 3 times. I love Kirk Vs Spock fights.
Also I imagine Spock is unahppy about
Vulcan going bye bye. Remember that the death of a Vulcan effects other Vulcans. Imagine what the destruction of their planet would do to him.
If this spoiler is true it's a major one that should not be read.

Trailer sounds great to me. When I read about the rebellious Kirk bit, I immediately thought of Shatner's Collision Course novel. That story has both an anti-authority Kirk, as well as a difficult beginning of a Kirk/Spock friendship. It can work.

Being surprised by something used to be part of the reason you went to see a movie
I don't believe I've ever gone to a movie so I could be surprised by the look of things. I don't necessarily want to know too much about the plot, or the script the first time, but a good movie can hold up under repeated viewings where there shouldn't be much surprise at all.

Having said all that, the description of this trailer doesn't excite me all that much, but I also know it wasn't made for people like me, who would go to see this movie even if it had no advertising.

---------------

If they show any vintage corvette without a stick shift it is a crime against humanity. Besides, Kirk driving a muscle car with an automatic transmision .....
It's not the driving that bothers me, it's where he drives it. :(

---------------

I am just waiting for someone to bitch about Kirk driving a vehicle that uses GASP...fossil fuels.

23rd Century - It'll probably be using a different kind of engine, with a clean-fuel system, possibly even a mini-fusion engine.

Also, it's possible it won't have a Clutch ;)

(Nervously waits for the inevitable arguments to arise about registry numbers, various irrelevant minutiae)

Kirik can't drive stick! It's canon! If that Chevy isn't an automatic, I'm going to be very upset.

Quantum has actually been running for a week here - imagine my disappointment when the only trailer they ran before it was for Twilight of all things.

Gah! Cedric Diggory has become Emo!SparklyVampire!

Anyway, let's wait and see, I'm not too sure I believe this is for real.

I am a supporter of this film - I hope it will bring something to the screen we've not seen before and I hope it will embed within the franchise a blockbuster ethic that relates to what we see up on the big screen and provides a handsome return for the studio thus ensuring that we see more.

However, I am not fan of the 'teen angst' thing, I am no fan of the 'my parents don't understand me' school of entertainment.

The nature of such things leaves me with a worry that I can't articulate or easily express - sometimes we need to accept that things are what they are and ten minutes of fleshing out why James T Kirk is James T Kirk might seem a little empty and lacking in depth, ten minutes of this might just be ten minutes wasted. If it's aimed at the lowest common denominator (vacuous teenagers, armed with knives and guns, high on crack while busily recreating themselves with females of dubious and loose moral standards) then this could be a disaster while adding nothing to the story other than an emotional hook for stupid and vacuous people.

Hope I'm wrong but..............

The voiceover quotes indicate that his kin DO understand him, and understand that he has more in store.

It is not hard to believe that James Kirk would have a troubled upbringing, being rebelious, independent minded, and very smart.

To face down all of those other cadets to become the captain of a ship, he'd also have to be highly competitive and ambitious, which is what would lead him to cheat on the Kobayashi Maru test.

In Generations, he tells Captain Harriman that "risk is part of the job.", and there is also the "risk is our business" speech from the Original Series.

He has the Hubris to make quick, risky decisions, to throw away the rulebook to do what's right, and the determined tanacity to get things done.

what ails him in youth is part of what makes him a great Captain, and why he's in that chair.

Sir - have I offended you in some way?

Has my less than teutonic sense of humour troubled you in some way?

Two world wars and one world cup - doo dah - doo dah.......

Yeah, Best Destiny also portrayed an anti-authority Kirk (but was lacking a bit on the beginning of his friendship with Spock). I think any starship captain has to start off as a bit anti-authority. Original thinking and a rebellious spirit many times go hand-in-hand.

Right. Even Picard had his wild days. Kirk's relationship with his Starfleet father may be what fuels his own wild behaviour.

Maybe he didn't enjoy Armageddon. I know I had a hard time sticking with it, but as with all things, YMMV. Let's just leave the world wars out, if it's okay with you; they don't really have any bearing on the movie.

It's official, these people don't know what they're doing!

Okay, that's bullshit - I just wanted to get it posted and save anyone else the trouble. This actually sounds like fun. :)
