The bridge shots (large images)

Re: The bridge shots

Wow just noticed witht he uniforms that those are acully thousands on deltas in the uniform to give it it's texture.

First impressions everyone?
Me?
It seems to be very crowded and cluttered, not feelin it right now. Of course I'll have to see later but as of the moment, not a fan
It's awful.

It seems to be "busy just for the sake of being busy." The ... what, the "yeoman's console?"... is ludicrous. It lacks any sense of being well-thought-out, or having any cohesive style.

The absolute worst element of it, however, is the "circuit board trace" element all over the place. For crying out loud, why not just put VACUUM TUBES all over the freaking thing?!? That's the sort of thing that someone who had no real grasp of technology does because they think that printed wiring boards are somehow "uber-kewl."

Plus, there's the fact that it's damned near pure white. Have any of you ever spent any considerable amount of time in a brightly-lit, all-white environment? I sure hope that Dr. McCoy keeps plenty of aspirin in his medical kit...

Fortunately, we have a trend of the movies redoing the bridge set every time around, and with luck, they'll start over if they do another movie and give us something that is more functional and less "dood, let's put more Mac-ish junk all over the place" in feel.

I really LIKE the look of the early SF ship, by contrast, and I'm reasonably happy with the effect of the uniforms, though I still think that the fabric patterning is just stupidity unleashed.

One thing I noticed in the article was that they make reference to the barrels of the phasers rotating to switch between "stun" and "kill" settings. Am I the only one who's picking up a hint of the "Pike-era laser pistol" in that description?

I rather like the bridge, looks rather good.

The uniforms on the otherhand make it look like a comedy sketch parody of 60's Star Trek.

I'm not really feeling the deltas-on-the-tunic thing. From a distance they look great, but up close... not as much. In close-ups I keep being reminded of the TOS Romulan material. Of course, I'll still be there when it opens. Perhaps on the big screen it will look better.

Too much like Supermans suit in "Superman Returns".
It's nonsensical, non-functional, and at BEST won't be noticed at all.

If the audience is paying close enough attention to the fabric to notice that... doesn't that inherently mean that the PLOT has failed to do so???

This is something to throw money away on (this wasn't off-the-rack fabric, they had to have it made, which means that they spent money from the budget that could have better been spent on other things!). The best possible option is that the audience won't notice it, because the film will be good enough that they won't be BORED ENOUGH to pay attention to that.

Re: The bridge shots

I think the texture in the new uniforms makes them look like higher quality materials than the old ones. The texture gives it this advanced-future-fabric kind of look. It gives the uniforms depth, as opposed to being just a flat color and material.

Re: The bridge shots

Captain's chair shot: What happened to Kirk's hand? More to the point... white bandages? What happened to spray-on skin and other 23rd century medical care? Maybe that's why McCoy is brooding in that shot. He's feeling guilty over letting a patient leave sickbay with a fabric bandage wrapped around his hand.

Re: The bridge shots

Hm. I'm rather impressed by the BRIGHT LIGHTS SHINING IN EVERYONE'S FACES. Notice the wall stations? No wonder TOS closeups of people's faces seems to have spotlights on 'em - they were EVERYWHERE!

You should now from being a member here that trekkies will over anylize this film to death. Also gives current HD technology and the latest digital cameras this film will be the most highest def trek product out there, So plenty of stuff for people to pick up on.

Re: The bridge shots

I think all the "pure white" talk is a bit overblown. Yeah there appear to be some bright lights shining down on the center of the bridge, but the surrounding areas look a lot more muted, and frankly not all that much brighter than the TOS bridge.

Hell, Sulu almost looks like he's in shadow.

Besides, the bridge is the freakin epicenter of the ship. It SHOULD look bright and active.
