What would you like to see in the 2010 SOTL Calendar?

There seems to be yet another design there in that little sketch in the corner. The crew module (for lack of the correct term) is vertical in that one, and the nacelles are at right angles to the ones in the larger drawing. Is there a more detailed drawing of that idea?
Yes.

But this thread is going all over the place. Nevertheless,... here you go:

Andrew-

Y'know, flip that on its side and that's a pretty nifty design, too....

That is soooo mean... ;)

A quick little idea mockup, along the HW/Chariot sort of lines. Not totally sure on the vertical saucer thing, since the decks would have to be real narrow or oriented differently from the engineering hull (Unless the saucer is just one big powersaw blade ;)).

The first thing that occurs to me when I see something like that is WHY is the secondary hull vertical? Yes, in space there's no aerodynamics, etc., but the precedence of all the Starfleet ships seen before with secondary hulls whose longest axis from bow to stern implies a design reason for that, even if it's not clear to us. For a ship to so radically differ begs some logical explanation, especially if your impulse engines are so far removed from the center of mass.

Plus, it looks like a its got a pistol grip. ;)

Frankly this configuration is intriguing to me and certainly seems doable with slight modifications.

I agree that the impulse engine should be lower, toward the center of mass but the warp engines should, for the same reason, be a bit higher and I wouldn't have that hull piece extending aft into the warp field. The only other issue would be the warp core and matter/antimatter containers. In this design, I would propose having them in a horizontal orientation... probably in a reinforced 'cross' section to which the forward sections of the warp engines would be attached.

The vertical secondary section would be perfect for a research vessel, allowing various research departments/disciplines (stacked vertically) direct access to space... each department having it's own pertinent sensor arrays.

Andrew-

I think deg3D's excellent take on the TOS Enterprise should be in the calender. He even already has a bunch of art shots using it that are all based on scenes from the show. :techman:

I would sure make for a lot of long, narrow decks. What would be the reason for long, narrow decks?

Well... I'm all for more concept work. I want to see more ships of 24xx, and... more timefleet ships. Isn't it also possible to have a corridor shot from, say, a Wells class looking out towards another ship, like the new Enterprise? Or her punishing the Romulan fighter which we've seen are bugging the Kelvin! Either way, seeing ships do regular work stuff, like unloading and loading, fighters getting ready for battle, stuff that depicts a "regular" day at work but still would look so ultimate cool to us 21st century meatbags ;)

Mister Probert, is there any way you can post more (unfinished) concept art? I'm always very intrigued by your designs :)

I would sure make for a lot of long, narrow decks. What would be the reason for long, narrow decks?

No more so than your typical office building's corridors feel long and narrow. If the ship was designed for science, as Mr. Probert suggests, it makes sense. All you need is a turbolift and a straight corridor down the middle, with science labs along each side.

As much as I enjoy Trek stuff, I'd like to see Trek artists ditch the saucer/engineering tube/nacelle rut and do a calendar of original, non-Trek designs.
