The bridge shots (large images)

Re: The bridge shots

Hate it. Hate everything about it. If they're gonna try and pass that off as the bridge of the Enterprise, they might as well go the next step and say that Lassie is a boa constrictor.

Open your eyes, people! The Emperor is walking around town bloody starkers!
You're entitled to your own opinion. It doesn't make mine or anyone else's invalid or any less thought-out, however. I know, like, and respect the old designs as much as you do. The Pike-era bridge is my favorite out of all Trekdom. Yet somehow I'm still excited.

Exactly how would you have had it look? What elements of the old bridge would you have kept, and what would you have updated?

Start with the same design, increase the detail of the control panels, use materials that look like sturdier stuff than the old set (which was fiberglass, btw, not plywood; 'nother topic).

What they've done here is give us a lot of happy talk about how they were "respecting canon", while they were taking the original design ethic and chucking it out the window.

We've already seen what the Enterprise bridge looked like during the original series. We've seen what it looked like when Pike was in command.

What we've seen from JJ ain't even in the same hemisphere.

Re: The bridge shots

I like the Cage era bridge better than the gaudy technicolor one from the series.
Given the show used gelled lights to distinguish rooms and sets, a gray bridge would have been totally out of sync with the other sets. Personally, I found Cage bridge dull looking, albeit I did like the black around the upper screens.

Re: The bridge shots

looks like an excellent place to buy my iPhone. Does anyone have the number, so I can find out if they have a black 16GB one in stock?

Re: The bridge shots

As I've mentioned in other threads, if Gene Roddenberry, Matt Jeffries et al were alive today and charged with making a big budget blockbuster Star Trek Movie, the bridge would not look anything like it did back in the 1960's.

I am 100 percent certain of that.

Whether it would look like this, I'm not sure - but it wouldn't look like it did 40 years ago on a budget of $10 with jelly buttons, tin foil and plywood.

Re: The bridge shots

As a fan, I wish they'd been a little more faithful, but I understand their desire to not look like a 60's tv show.

Still, this new bridge really looks like it's overcompensating.

I have to see a better view before I decide if I like it or not.

Re: The bridge shots

^ At the moment, it looks a little too bright and busy for my own personal taste, but I'm going to reserve judgement until I see it under filmed conditions with sound effects etc.

Bob Orci was banging on about the red flooring in an interview I read somewhere, saying that was the best bit.

Must be some floor

Re: The bridge shots

Everyone's also assuming that young Cadet Kirk isn't doing a little time-traveling of his own...

Actually, that's brilliant. If, say, a 25 year old Kirk finds himself thrown 6 or 7 years into the future, it would allow the filmmakers to take advantage of the iconography of the original series (with the freedom to change whatever suits them) while still telling the story of young Kirk before he was the Captain. Then, at the climax of the film, he gets to go back to his own time and save the entire universe and become the Kirk we all know and love. After that, they could just throw in a little '6 Years Later...' tag at the end with Kirk coming aboard the Enterprise as the Captain.

Gold.

Agree 100%

That's my thing, I think they could have "had their cake and eat it too" by keeping the general layout the same while updating the electronics and look of the equipment. The picture makes the bridge seem radically different, at least to my eyes.

But as you correctly point out, we really need to see more of it.

He really said it was red? It kind of looks like wood in that one shot. I can't wait to see sickbay.

Well, he definitely said something along the lines of "wait till you see the floor". It looks a reddy brown to me in those pictures.

Burgandy maybe?

Re: The bridge shots

The floor? THE FUCKING FLOOR!?! THAT'S WHAT THEY THINK IS THE FUCKING SELLING POINT OF THIS CRAP!?!

I hope this thing tanks so badly that Paramount forces JJ to reimburse the studio.
