I don't care anymore, and neither does anyone else.

You know how in team sports with a clock, when your team is getting the crap kicked out of them, the other team is being disrespectful and insulting by running up the score? But if your team is the one running up the score, they're just allowing their backups to play because it'd be disrespectful and insulting to tell your players who never play to slum it?

That's sort of the way it is with the "Star Trek is my way or the highway" people.

When you're producing something that is part of a larger franchise, you have an obligation to be true to the rules of that franchise. If you're going in to overturn the entire applecart and start over, you also have an obligation to be upfront about that.

Everyone involved with this project has lied to us, plain and simple.

They said it wasn't going to be a reboot, but those pics, and the plot details that have been revealed to this point, confirm that this thing can't be anything BUT a reboot (unless there's gonna be one big massive reset button hit at the end, in which case, at best, it'll be one big colossal waste of time).

It might get a big opening weekend.

But since this movie consists of one big $150 million middle finger to the long time fans, it's gonna make Speed Racer look like Citizen Kane.

Mark my words, kids, we're talking one big warp driven Butterball turkey coming down the pike.

I for one, love a good Thanksgiving Turkey.

Re: I don't care anymore, and nobody else cares (that I don't)

Why do you outright proclaim that this "isn't for Star Trek fans" and is instead for "movie fans?" That's demeaning, especially for a large group of fans who've kept this franchise going for arguably far longer that it should have.

Statistics and experience have shown Paramount that "Star Trek" fans make no more than 10% of a typical cinema audience. Avid, hardcore ST fans supposedly only make up 1% - and completist ST collectors are only a fraction of that 1%.

They know this from merchandise sold after the first ten ST films.

Re: I don't care anymore, and nobody else cares (that I don't)

Is that correct? That's interesting if so.

I don't feel lied to. Not at all! Those pics look exactly as I imaged from the fragments we'd already been told.

Kirk is cigar-smooking female?

Spock is an angry Klingon?

Nero doesn't have at least one pointed ear?

Chekov's not the youngest looking regular crewmember?

Uhura doesn't wear her iconic ST earrings?

Re: I don't care anymore, and nobody else cares (that I don't)

I've heard those numbers quoted by people like Susan Sackett, Richard Arnold and the Pocket Books editors.

ST fans often have an inflated idea of their importance to the box office take, although they are very important when it comes to word of mouth reviews. If too many ST fans are annoyed by a ST movie, it tends to affect wider audience interest in seeing it.

Attendances can also be affected by the fact that avid ST fans go back to see a good ST movie over and over and over. But no ST film can perform well if it only appeals to ST fans.

I've seen TOS. I loved it. Same with just about all other Trek. We don't need SAME. We need NEW. We need DIFFERENT. We need UNEXPECTED.

We need NEW, DIFFERENT and UNEXPECTED Star Trek, not NEW DIFFERENT and UNEXPECTED ... something else. It's not like they haven't made this mistake before (I'm looking at you, Archer & friends!!)

Re: I don't care anymore, and nobody else cares (that I don't)

I care.....

And I'm nervous about what They've done to Trek also (based on the little bit given so far), but I'm still open-minded enough to at the very least, give it a chance (meaning at least one viewing in the theaters).

The comments by Capt. April above, ring true to how 'WE' have been treated by TPTB at Paramount in the past.
I'm not saying that this is definitely the case this time around, but...

The EW article does have a lot of OFFICIAL COMMENTS by the Folks making this movie using the word REBOOT.

And that is something that WE have been told up to this point on several occasions by Other's involved, would not necessarily be the case.

I don't see, based on these pics alone, a Total Reboot being the case.
But Their OFFICIAL COMMENTS do give me cause to worry.

Much as I respect you, I've gotta disagree. I've been following this movie as long as anyone, and I don't feel lied to on any level upon seeing these pictures. I expected visuals along these lines, and its exactly what we got. Moreover, they don't "violate the rules of the Trek universe" in any way, shape, or form.

Even if it does turn out to be a reboot - so what? Worse things could happen than the Trek universe starting over fresh with a sea of unexpected adventures to enjoy.

It's the fanbase that goes out and sees a movie multiple times. A casual audience member only sees it once, if at all.

That's why franchises live and die by their fanbases. Why Paramount thinks Star Trek is somehow immune to this is anyone's guess, but in a not-very-long time from now, they're going to be taught a very cruel lesson of life.

This sucker is gonna tank, big time.

^Umm...I feel like I'm watching an episode of Conan's "In The Year 2000".

You've seen the future, eh?

As pointed out, only 1 percent of 1 percent of 10 percent actually give a shit about how the way the bridge looks will effect their overall impression of the film.

I think you're misguessing the reaction of most fans.

Re: I don't care anymore, and nobody else cares (that I don't)

I can't wait for the film, but i admit to being a bit worried. I always am when they seem to be almost contradicting themselves..is it part of established canon or is it new? It reminds me of the "vague history" that Superman and Superman 2 were to provide for Superman Returns.. I was excited about this months before the movie's release, because i love the "Donnerverse" but as I got closer to the film's release it just seemed like they didn't know how to write a film that could either truely embrace the spirit of those films or be on its on but instead languish somewhere in the middle. That made SR the most disappointing film I've ever seen.. dissappointing because after so many years it should have been awesome.. instead it was stale boring and lifeless, and yet not bad enough to really hate it.

I am hoping that after many years without Trek this will be worht it.

See, I didn't look on Enterprise as new, different, or unexpected. It felt very much the same, and that was the problem. It should've been wildly different, but was only marginally so in a few Treknological details.

Agreed.
I like ENT but it was just TNG/VOY with other actors.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed what was done for "Superman Returns". I thought it was a great way to merge the stories, characters and styles of three films that were decades apart in their productions.
