Sadly official: The Simpsons may never die

Frankly, I never saw the draw to begin with. I always thought that show was kinda juvenile - and got worse later on.

But now they are getting into the cross-generational fan base thing, so it doesn't surprise me that they are gonna continue to pump it. My nephews watch it now, and they weren't even born when the Simpsons premiered.

Love the Simpsons, besides all the in jokes only Americans would get. Long may it reign over us.

Although the show has changed I still find it entertaining, just in a different way. Even though many may feel that the show has run its course, I see no compelling reason that it should be cancelled when its numbers are fine and many people still watch it.

I haven't watched the series in years but I really enjoyed the movie last year. I'd go for another one of those.
I enjoyed the movie as well.

One of my favorite things about The Simpsons has always been the marriage between Homer and Marge, so I really enjoy when they give them a semi-serious problem to deal with.

In a new interview, co-chairman of 20th Century FOX Teleision said this, after saying they are renewing TS:

And as far as “The Simpsons” goes, that show can probably stay on the air as long as Jim Brooks and that cast continue to want to produce it. It continues to deliver great numbers and feel creatively alive.
JUST LET IT DIE ALREADY!!!

It's been an empty ant eaten husk for over a decade. They couldn't just let it die, oh no, they had to cuts it a thousand times and let it bleed slowly. They they poured ants on it. Then they pissed on the bones. Right now they are humping the eye sockets.

The SImpsons has been on so long now, that it will be hard to imagine a world without it on the air. Even when the show ends, we'll probably see The Simpsons in syndication forever.
Isn't it second only to Gunsmoke now as the longest running US series of all time? They'll try to beat at least that record before they end the show.

I haven't watched a new ep in years, but if people still enjoy it, as others have said, more power to em.

I am curious...when one main cast member wants to leave/retire/whatever, will they cancel the show? Or just replace the actor. Like, if the voice of Homer feels that he doesn't want to return, but all the other cast members do, will Fox recast? I suppose it is not out of the realm of possibility, but it is an interesting thing to think about.

The only downside to the Simpsons going on this long is that when it reruns in syndication, they tend to favor the newer episodes. So the odds of me turning on a Simpsons rerun and happening to catch a good episode have dwindled down to almost zero by now. And I'm not motivated enough to go out and rent DVDs of the earlier seasons.

Similar to Law & Order on TNT. We only see mostly newer episodes. The oldest really goin back to the 8th season (sometimes older). But still thats a stretch.

I have The Simpsons Seasons 1 to 9 on DVD. My favorite years are in there, because I grew up watching them from premiere to now. My personal opinion is that around Season 10, they lost some of their mojo. I think it was because of Matt Groening's jump to Futurama, and left The Simpsons in other hands. The shows are still funny, but completely predictable at this point. That being said, there are times when a real gem shines through, and I inhale it like a breath of fresh air.

The Simpsons can keep going because they have so much to draw upon. Plus, there's something magnetic about them, that draws me to them. Even though I only wanted Seasons 1 through 9, now I'm considering 10 and 11, the latest ones out on DVD. I don't have as many enjoyable episodes as the previous seasons, but there are some great ones in there, and I will probably buy them. To save money, I buy them used and only pay about $8 a season on average. Of course, I got Season 1 for $1.99. That was awesome.

I lost interest in Family Guy after their 3rd season, as it was wholly predictable and wasn't even cutting edge anymore. The show's just "meh" for me now. King of The Hill is still a decent show, but I pretty much stopped watching after Season 5. American Dad you can keep. After the first season I couldn't stand it anymore. Futurama is still fun, but I'm getting a little worn on it.

Anyhoo, The Simpsons is still solid, even if predictable, and I will continue to watch happily. Believe it or not, I care for the characters, and wish they'd do more heartwarming episodes rather than the more callous ones they've done the past couple of years. Has anyone else noticed that?

That being said, if you don't like the show, don't watch it. It's not like they're holding you hostage. There are lots of shows I don't like, but I know other people get enjoyment out of them. I like the show Firefly, but it was cancelled after less than a full season. Total bummer, but what are ya going to do? That said, I don't want anyone to have to see their favorite show cut short. We like them for a reason, even if you don't like that reason. So don't worry about it. Chill. Not worth getting worked up over. It's just a television show, and that's the point.

Simpson's has had it's ups and downs, flashes of brilliance and moments in the gutter, but it has remained consistently entertaining for 2 decades.

As long as there are stupid situations for stupid guys to get into they can keep making it. I hope they go on for another 2 decades.

You have to watch the Simpsons in the same way that a sports fan still watches his favorite team, even if they haven't won a championship in years.

I mean, ask a Red Sox fan about loyalty. They can give you a much longer explanation than any Simpsons-watcher can.

But it's the same basic idea.

Peaked when Conan O'Brien was part of the staff. That was forever and a day ago.

Still has rare moments of cleverness. I too watch out of tradition. I think the Simpsons movie was weak.

If they wanted to shake things up, they'd age the kids permenantly (as opposed to those "glimpses into the future" episodes. They never will; they know what happened to the Flintstones!

Who cares?

I got tired of it around 1999... so I stopped watching.

Others do still enjoy it. More power to them.

Don't you understand ANYTHING about TrekBBS? Successful TV shows that you don't watch are a more serious threat to your life than terrorism!

Simple solution for all:

If you still like it, watch it.

If you don't, STOP WATCHING IT. Don't turn it on, don't come back here to bitch about it, let the people who do though enjoy it in peace.

Kudos to all of you (and anyone who expressed similar sentiments). I was all set to come on here and do my patented "You have the power to cancel any show you don't like by simply not watching it" rant, but y'all beat me to it.

:techman:

Sox have won twice in the last 6 years if I'm not mistaken. But I see your point, maybe Cubs fans would be a better example ;)

If given the option of terrorism or a new episode of the Simpsons, I choose terrorism every time.

Wow, I had no idea you were one of those type of posters on here. :(

Well I was going to give your family a bunch of Simpsons DVD box sets for Christmas, but now I'll have to send them anthrax instead.

they seem to have rebooted the simpson's background recently to set them in the 90's instead of the late 70's early 80's
