One, I think that all "space based" military operations should be placed under a new military service, the "United States Space Force".
Cool, still....why?Second I think that NASA should have an "officer corps" like the NOAA and PHSS do. These are not military, but uniformed civilians.
Na, they need to get rid of it and open space to private enterprise.
I'm talking about a uniformed service, not another armed force under the DoD. That's why I specifically mentioned that it be like the PHSCC and NOAA Corps. To create a separate uniformed force responsible for space, that's why.
Why would we need that? Our military has got enough branches as it is (possibly even too many).

Smells too much like the militarization of space which would be against the Outer Space Treaty signed in 1967 which specifically prohibited the use of outer space for anything other than peaceful purposes and does NOT allow military maneuvers.
If you do it then everyone else does it and we really don't have the money to spend on making space "ours".
Then everyone else will do it too. China wins.
Not if another nation nukes us from orbit.

Expansion into space means everyone wins.
no. no no no no no. NO. Horrible idea. As someone currently serving in the Army I can say without a doubt that such a move would be a disaster. Culturally, the branches are way to different to work properly as a unified force. Right now the branch that is the closest to the US Army is the USAF and even then there are just too many difference (from living condition standards to how to conduct physical training). I should also add that the creation of the one branch Canadian military was hardly a popular move. I can just imagine the clusterfuck created by the unification of the branches *shudder*One, I think that all "space based" military operations should be placed under a new military service, the "United States Space Force".

Like I said, that would mean having *too many branches*. We should start to think about doing what the Canadians have done - create a military with only *one* branch. We should simplify things, not make them more complicated.
From wikiAnd while we're at it we should not have any branches that "sound" military but really aren't. Is there any particular *reason* that the PHSCC and NOAA Corps are uniformed services? What does that accomplish? I'm not saying abolish the organizations, of course. Just stop trying to make them 'paramilitary'.
