I'm sure there will be a lot of modern references that the 70s characters won't get. Of course of they do use British culture references, we'll be able to sympathize.

My bet is that this one will do decently in the ratings and actually hang onto its audience. I doubt I'll be part of the audience - I'm just not seeing anything that appeals to me - but there's something about the tough-guy 70s milieu that I think will appeal to men in particular. Having actors like Keitel and Imperioli won't hurt, either.
I think this show will lock in a young-ish male audience based on the well known tough-guy actors and "cool" 70s milieu. The audience won't be into the coma/time travel/girlfriend angle, tho. I wouldn't be surprised if they soft-pedal that after a while. The real strength of this show will be the style (works for Mad Men) and the fact that there really isn't anything comparable on TV. They could do just as well to drop all sci fi connections and make this a cop show set in a historical context.
For whatever reason, I'm more interested in seeing the ratings for this sucker than in acutally watching it.
I'll watch it just for the record, at least the first episode.

As the thread title indicated, it's on tonight, 10/9.
I thought this was midseason and Very Very risky by ABC because every single show with the exception of CSI (debut tonight) which has aired late in the season has saw poor starts. However with Grey's Anatomy as lead in the show should get double figures but don't expect a good rentention. ABC have a chance to have a must see Thursday come 2009 with LOST, Greys & Life on Mars. Of course Life on Mars be most likely replaced by LOST and Ugly Betty will keep the 8pm slot but if ABC were smart move LOST back to 9 to get all those DVR viewers back.
I don't have a thursday night show and being a fan of the UK one, I think I will give this a chance.

Just watching the first act... they really sped it up and dumped him into the 70s pretty quickly. Also, since this is New York City, they did the requisite WTC shot. If it's good enough for Spielberg...
Me likey and Lisa Bonet. The WTC shock was the sort of smack in the face Americans need to figure that we ain't in Kansas anymore.
As much as I do like the concept, I really think they could have done without the Sci-fi element altogether. If they wanted to do a gritty 70s cop drama, do a gritty 70s cop drama.
As much as I liked Colm Meaney, Harvey Kaitel really works.
I wonder if they'll do other stuff the UK version did like use the 70s ABC graphics or find some way to have a Sam Tyler Muppet on Sesame Street.
I do like the change to New York city, There are so many things you could do with that in itself. Was this around the time that the stuff in Serpico was going on?

I'm just not feeling the show right now though. The new Annie isn't charming, the cops just feel off and Sam... isn't Sam enough.

Never saw the brit show, but I am liking this one...

Sam finds out why his father abandoned him and tries to stop it. In fact, that's one of the main character arcs of the first season. But he doesn't try to stop major events from happening.
The ending of the pilot is drastically different and it makes me wonder if they didn't leak the LA pilot on purpose to try to get some feedback. For the US series, it's definitely a stronger ending. It makes me want to watch the series just to see where they go with it anyway.

I haven't seen the British original, but I liked what I saw tonight. Harvey Keitel was great, and hopefully they'll use Michael Imperioli's character more. Looks like I've got some new "appointment" viewing.
