Star Trek costume advice

Kirkman1987

Halloween is approaching and I have decided to be a starfleet officer this year round. I've never done this before, and was wondering if any of you could offer some assistance or tips. What's the best place to buy? I know Ebay is good but is there anywhere else?

I haven't chosen a specific era officer to be, but would generally like to keep the price for this under $100.

Buy a $10 sweatshirt. Apply black ink to the collar. Purchase the starfleet insignia. Get some giftwrapping ribbon for the stripes. You're done.

That's not a bad idea, considering the officially licensed Captain Kirk tunic I got a couple of years ago for about $30 wasn't all that accurate, being basically a sweat shirt with an insignia and braids ironed on.

Ditto.

This was made in a few minutes way back in 1980. An existing, old favourite, red velour sweater, with the Lincoln Enterprises' insignia conveniently covering a moth hole that had made the top unwearable, and the metallic gold "ric-rac" braid (found in a haberdashery) covering a second moth hole, hence the braid is a little high - but I was contemplating removing the ribbed cuffs.

I'm also wearing a black turtleneck, long-sleeved T-shirt underneath. In later years, I cut the black collar off it and had it sewn in place on the red shirt.

See... I knew the new two-piece tops were canon. If Therin of Andor wears it... IT IS CANON!

Those of you that have used the "real" braids, could you post a pic of a length of it with a ruler next to it? I'm re-working the 4 AMT model kit vinyl figures and need to re-sculpt the braids for proper scale and detail.
