Accelerating with respect to what?

You know, that map stretches linear distances in Antarctica by an unbelievable amount. If you wanted to walk along the coast between, say, the Amery Ice Shelf and the Ross Ice shelf (to pick a couple of easy landmarks), the round-earth model puts it at what, a few thousand miles? That map puts it closer to 25,000 miles. It should be pretty easy to prove to a Flat Earther which theory is correct, assuming he's willing to make a trip to the Antarctic.

Charles Johnson isn't still alive anymore, is he?

 

You don't even have to walk Antartica. Just try to sail from Terra del Fuego to Australia. It would take months instead of weeks. New Zealand is no longer just offshore of Australia. It's now like Hawaii is to California.

You know what's great? Going back and re-reading the first three sentences of this thread.

No. See, this is the problem, people work under false assumptions that they just accept. You are working under the assumption that gravity on the Earth IS. If the Earth did have gravity and the sun and moon were caught and trying to escape leading to them revolving, that would be orbit. This is not the case.

In the "accelerating upwards" model, the stars, sun and moon are also accelerating upwards. Though we can't be certain of the exact cause, a big bang might cause such a movement. And I know that no one here can consider this far fetched since this is also what most scientists believe.

As for the speed. Well, it's possible that Einstein got it wrong but let's say that this isn't the case in regards to the nature of relativity. The equations of Special Relativity prevent an object from accelerating to the speed of light. Due to this restriction, these equations prove that an object can accelerate at a constant rate forever, and never reach the speed of light.

Antarctica is basically ice covered land. If it were to melt, the water would still remain on the Earth.

 

All those pictures from outer space make the flat Earth look almost ... spherical. It's amazing. ;-)

But have to poke a hole in the falt Earth theory: while you can sail in circle and not go over the edge, but the dumb reasoning, if you keep going stright thew the ice, you'd have to reach a boundary where you can go no further. And you'd see nothing but stars. And since people have explored Antarctica across and in other directions, we know it's not like that.

 

Again, that's what They want you to believe.

The real question isn't "is the Earth flat," it's "what's on the other side?"

 

This whole thing seems to stem from Microsoft's attempt to liken anyone who finds Vista unacceptable to Flat Earthers, which can also be taken a backhanded slight of an OS whose mascot is from that surrounding ice barrier at the edge of the flat Earth.

Except that I've been to both hemisphere and the moon looks tipped on its side when on the horizon in New Zealand or Australia as compared to America, and that only works if you're 90 degrees around on a spherical surface. Nice try, tho...and here's some lovely parting gifts...

 

To continue with your game, I have a few more questions.

1. How can it be the middle of the night in Russia when it's the middle of the day in the United States?

2. Why does the length of the day vary depending on what part of the disk you're on?

3. What mechanism causes it to be significantly colder at the center of the Earth and at the edge of the Earth than it is in the space between the two?

Oh, he's definitely pulling our leg. I'm just playing along.

The reason I didn't use the sailing example is that if you took a Flat Earther from South America to Australia on a ship, he could accuse you of sailing in circles to make the trip longer. If you walk the coast of Antarctica, the ocean is always on the same side and there's no question that you are where you say you are-- and that it only took a fraction of the time to traverse the distance.

#3 could probably be explained away by some quirk of Flat Earth geography, but #1 and #2 are very simple and very hard to refute.
