OK, I'm all excited about this movie now, and I started reading the manga again!

It could be totally incorrect but the way I understand their copyright policy for imported shows, the royalties from Funimation's release of it here go to the copyright holder of the anime series, in this case Toei Animation not the creator of the story. Toriyama only has rights to his manga, which is how Toei was able to make Dragonball GT without his involvement or consent I imagine. Since this live action movie is being made by us, who have a policy for royalties and the fact that it's a completely new adaptation it's highly likely he could get a cut if he wanted but I'd talk to a legal expert if you really wanted to know since I can't say anything for certain.

In fact, he made character concepts for Dragonball GT. Pan is his creation for Toei to run with. SSJ4 is his creation - he made several and Toei picked the one you see on screen.

I've also specifically read that whan people have asked him questions about GT he's said only that he was not involved in it and couldn't answer.

So no, Toriyama own's the copyright for Dragon Ball and all derivatives, and he gets a cut. I wonder if Toei even gets a single dime from the movie. Now the manga publishing company that Toriyama was affiliated with when he did Dragon Ball though, they undoubtedly get a piece of the pie, as since he worked there they partially own it.

Don't know who you've read, but I have this odd idea that you've read people who so do not like Dragon Ball GT they attribute they're opinions to Toriyama. Toriyama has said that he's okay with it, that it isn't horrible. He (as anyone with a brain) also knows it isn't as good as the original, but he's mostly neutral about it.

toryama did a whole number of charater designs for GT, and he wrote the ending makeing Toei promise to bring the dragonball series to an end afterwords, i believe he originally wanted DBZ to end at the frieza saga

I disagree, I think he headed towards parody more. A little bit with the Cell Saga by introducing Mr. Satan, then he almost went the whole hog with the Majin Buu Saga. Just check out Gotenks the wannabe Z warrior with all his special attacks which turn out to be pretty lame or the fushion that makes him really fat

Well if it had ended at the Frieza saga then we wouldn't have ever had my favorite part, The Cell Games. That's the only part of the series I've seen fit to own.

Take all the things that annoyed you about DBZ and multiply them by a factor of 3 and then you'll have GT.

The story didn't drag as much as in DBZ. I just had the feeling the writers were making shit up as they progressed, with no particular direction. The Tsufuru back story was interesting but something was definitely lacking: a purpose.

The beginning of GT was a bit of a Drag when they turned it back into a quest series. Things moved on quickly when they got back to Earth and with fewer episodes they wrapped things up faster. This could also be due to the fact that it didn't have any Manga to follow unlike DB and DBZ. They didn't need filler to slow things down while the Manga went on ahead.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who was so annoyed by this. i loved dragonball (the original run) with the young goku. it was funny and the action, whatever there was of it, lasted 1 or so ep only.

if you're doing an anime based on a currently running manga series, befor you proceed, you will have a contract that states you will have to take liberties in the story else the manga maker will have to churn them out as fast as the tv series. you DO NOT take one fight scene and make it last an entire season. well i guess it was made for kids and kids really don't know any better lol. like the people who are rewatching the show now, that they loved during childhood, and are finding out how silly it is because it was made for children.

i guess it's really not fair complaining about a show when it was made for a different demographic lol. i just hope they don't make the movie like they did dbz because i will just not watch it.

This argument makes no sense whatsoever. ALL network cartoons are made for children, with the exception of the first season of Batman TAS, which aired at night. Why would any of you expect it to retain it's greatness to you, once you grew up? Transformers was great, but now it's unwatchable. G.I. Joe was great, but guess what, now it's unwatchable. Remember Voltron? Yup, unwatchable.

In any case, I LOVED Dragonball Z. It was the best in the series, a fact supported by its ridiculous popularity. Deny it all you want, but that part of the series got it noticed in America.
