Wasn't the Galaxy class one of the biggest, most powerful ships they had?
Not to mention that losing one would have to be a serious psychological blow, if they ALL had lots of families aboard the way the Enterprise-D did...
And besides, the luster of the Galaxy class had been lost somewhat by the time DS9 was in its 2nd season.
I'd say it wasn't untill after Sisko's mission in The Search that Starfleet truly stepped up its defensive posture, though probably at rather slow and steady pace.
Remember, the Federation knew next to nothing about the Dominion in The Jem Hadar, and while certainly the Dominion had shown themselves to be quite agressive and technologically advanced with the destruction of the Odyessy, Starfleet's intel on their fleet strength was practically nil, as they'd only encountered three ships at that point.
After The Search, Sisko probably brought back enough intelligence on the Dominion for the Top Brass to be truly spooked.
That ship had a very bizzare bridge...just thought I'd throw that in there...
I think Starfleet did pump up its defenses prior to the Odyssey incident because of the Borg scare and Wolf 359. I actually think they were already in the process... Remember many ships like Akira, Steamrunner, Sabre, and Defiant class vessels became far more common and saw extensive combat in the later DS9.\
And besides, the luster of the Galaxy class had been lost somewhat by the time DS9 was in its 2nd season.
I'd disagree with that. Galaxy-class were the primary battleships of the Dominion War! The only ships in the fleet that can outgun it are the Sovereign and Prometheus-class vessels, which were extremely rare and it was only their quantum torpedo launchers that had the Galaxy completely outclassed. Neither of them were even commisioned until 4th Season (Sovereign), and 6th Season (Prommy). Really only Akira and Nebula class starships can match the firepower and defensive systems of a Galaxy-class during that time.
Did the Federation/SF go onto a war footing?
