Repetitious phrases

At the moment, I'm coping with an ulcer, caffeine withdrawal, an upcoming surgical procedure that requires me to fast, an insurance-paperwork fiasco, juggling three projects, trying to line up next year's paying work, and struggling to meet the deadline for my first original novel.
I can't figure out if now is the time to mention the Mack-centric dream I had last night (seriously, I'm not making that up). Hey, it cheered me up. Oh wait, are there minors on this forum? :alienblush:

In any case, Dave, best of luck getting through all that. Quite frankly, in your case I think it's the caffeine withdrawal that scares me the most. For the rest of it, kick its ass.

my only problem with Mack's writing is his use of 'picayune' three times in Harbinger.

i'd never heard it before, but now, for some reason, i fucking hate that word...

but, the book's still made of win.

This observations seems ... nitpicky? trifling? of little value? I know there's a word for this...

It was dark.

Too dark.

So dark that even Stygians stood around and said, "Damn, it's dark."
:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

The Stygians are the group I enjoy playing most in Civilization II: Test of Time. I'm going to have to add Damn, It's Dark to my list of Underground City names.

Respectfully, this sounds a bit defensive to me.
"Respectfully," why should I give a fuck what you think? At the moment, I'm coping with an ulcer, caffeine withdrawal, an upcoming surgical procedure that requires me to fast, an insurance-paperwork fiasco, juggling three projects, trying to line up next year's paying work, and struggling to meet the deadline for my first original novel. And I log on yesterday to find a thread in which I'm being taken to task over individual fucking words in my dozen or so books? I'm sorry, but "respectfully," give me a fucking break. :scream:

Wow, what a... Stygian response. Don't worry, dude... I was not trying to insult you.

I'm reading A Time to Kill right now, and I want to thank you for it. It's the first really good book in the whole A Time To... series. Your novel is redeeming the time I spent wading through 1500 pages because I have to finish what I started. I was starting to wonder if the series would ever find its sea legs, and you were the one to do it, so major props.

I wish you well with all of your problems and annoyances, even if I am apparently one of them.

Am I the only one who doesn't know what stygian means anyway? Seems very.. obscure.

http://m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?Stygian
Main Entry: sty·gian
Pronunciation: \ˈsti-j(ē-)ən\
Function: adjective
Usage: often capitalized
Etymology: Latin stygius, from Greek stygios, from Styg-, Styx Styx
Date: 1513

1 : of or relating to the river Styx
2 : extremely dark, gloomy, or forbidding <the stygian blackness of the cave>

You learn something new every day. I'd've thought "of or relating to the river Styx" would be "Styxy".

This thread makes me laugh. Well, except for the parts where David Mack is going through Stressful Things - that makes me sad, as someone who's going through Stressful Things himself at the moment. Hope things get better, David.

As for the actual topic, I do remember that Michael Jan Friedman used the phrase "plus," at the beginning of sentences, so many times during the Brother's Keeper trilogy that it eventually started making me laugh out loud every time I read it.

Belated apologies for my previous "nuclear option" response. Today was the first day that the caffeine-withdrawal symptoms hit me full force, and on top of my angst over having all of my creature comforts taken away following an excruciatingly painful weekend, it was just a perfect storm.

But again: Sorry, Star Treks and Xeris. You guys just happened to find the bullet on this round of "David Mack Russian Roulette."

And Amy? Feel free to e-mail me the details of that dream any time you feel like brightening my day....

No probs, life just sucks sometimes. Just you've done Destiny so we'll just pepper you with praise later, that'll perk you right up - and maybe you'll get that vaunted spot on the NYT bestseller list.
