I'm done with Vista

You can put the search box in the start menu in vista. I also have Tweakvi which adds a lot of functionality to Vista like Tweakui used to for pre-Vista. I'm still very happy with Vista, my computer has never been more stable.

You want to reply to this thread. Doing so may change it and effect it's course. Are you sure you wish to continue.

Yes.

Vista sucks...

You are pointing out flaws in Vista. Doing so may undermine the operating system. Do you wish to continue.

Yes.

It's just a pain in the ass I see little improvements in it. I use my XP machine far more than my Vista one.

I wish Vista will just go the way of ME.

... AWAY

RAMA, I've gotta tell ya...

I've run 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP and now have spent lots of time with Vista, and if Vista is the most stable your computer has ever been... what kinds of programs were you running before? Just... anything?

Equally as stable, I could see. But I would honestly take ME over what I've seen of Vista.

I actually think Vista is better than XP.

Micro.soft has been going way South since 1999, and got taken over by cokeheads when Gates stepped down

No this ain't a fabrication

MS needs to hire an office full of guys who spend all day streamlining windows code BEFORE IT COMES OUT.

Microsoft streamline code? You haven't been working long with compiuters or in the IT industry. MS doesn't streamline code - they often fatten their linked code libraries as hardware performance improved because then, they can crank in out faster.

Microsoft...streamlined code...:guffaw:

(And I've been working with computers since Junior High back in 1975 before Apples or PCs were on the market - I in fact laughed when Apple announce it was going to offer a programable (high level language) computer that fit on a desk).

I like Vista and have become used to it's little quirks.
I see the potential for a massive, powerful OS, but to me it looks like form won over function, if only a little. I hope the Vista OS will be utilized and improved upon, because I really do think it's got a lot to offer.

So. . . your point is what exactly? That because they don't do it, they shouldn't bother starting?

I think his point is that MS hasn't been streamlining code since, oh, about ever, so they're not going to start now just because we want them to.

Once you neuter all the "PC for dummies stuff", it's actually a very powerful OS.

Ditto.

I like Vista.

I've only had a few crashes since Vista (I switched to Vista in Feb 2008).

XP crashed on me several times per week.

Win 98 crashed on me several times per day.

Vista is relatively stable, and so far seems more secure.

I can ever remember this being a pattern back in the DOS days. Even then, it was common to stick to the previous version at first.

What were you doing to your computer that it continuously crashed to begin with?
I use XP Pro and got crashes rarely (in extreme cases if the hardware like my overclocked CPU overheated when pushed too much which would reset the computer or an extremely resource hungry application like 3d studio Max hanging up due to it's own bugs unrelated to the OS) and no BSOD's.

Seriously, I have to wonder what people do to their computers, and if they heard of basic maintenance for cleaning up the registry, garbage and defragmentation that will keep the computer in shape (not to mention decent anti-virus/anti-spyware software like Nod32 and Spybot) and of course not installing all sorts of things from the internet and reacting to every 'your computer may be infested with spyware' ads.

I had XP Pro installed on my computer for over 4 years before deciding it was time to reinstall (because one of the rare games I played messed up the codecs section upon installing and system restore did not work).
Up until then it was working fine with occasional quirks (nothing serious) ... most of which were not related to the OS and it was (still is) stable.

I have to agree with that. I was having problems with my 98SE installation toward the "end", mainly because I like to muck around and experiment with things and had probably bloated the registry to hell despite regular maintenance. Any problems I've had with XP (Pro) have similarly been my own doing. Aside from that both were / are, in my experience, perfectly stable and reliable OSs - XP especially - so it's always interesting to read about XP being "unstable".

If Vista works for people, great, but I've yet to see a single compelling reason to "upgrade" to it.

^^ Of all the computer owners in the world only a minority is able to actually do the little maintenance that a PC requires to run reliable..

As for Linux, great stuff, there's a distro for every need imaginable, I even got a Pentium 133 wth 64Mb RAM and a 2.1 Gb drive online, capable of browsing, IM and IRC all running at the same time while doing things like text editing and quite speedy as well by using Puppy Linux:bolian:

As for Vista, its so very meh... it doesn't do anything more then NT4/Win2K or XP and what it does it needs enormous amounts of resources... :brickwall::rolleyes:

I've been running Windows Vista pretty much since RC2 in the fall of 2006 and it's as stable if not more so than XP. It will run ok on any computer with more than 512MB ram but really shines with 2GB+. That being said if Vista isn't to your liking then you'd be fine sticking with XP until Windows 7 comes out in 2010. XP will be fully supported until 2011 by Microsoft I do believe.

I'm sure the problem was the registry, I did run registry repair programs, but I am not an expert enough to understand exactly how to fix registry problems.

From my point of view though, a decent OS should pro-actively fix registry issues without the user having to worry about it.
