Not being able to get back to Earth was not a problem premise for "Voyager." In fact, there were no problems with the premise of the show. Once a series gets going, most people only pick apart the premise when the show stops entertaining them.
^^ No, it was more a dig against Atlantis than Voyager. Voyager's premise was sound, it was just the execution that was the problem. The problem with Atlantis was that it was a big song and dance about them being cut off from Earth with no means of contact/travel with/to the homeworld, only for both of those obstacles to be overcome pretty early in the show's run. Just hoping that Universe doesn't go the same way and that they're controlling the ship by the first season's end.....
Stargate Voyager will have the same effect has Star Trek Voyager did, it will be the beginning of the end of Stargate. TAKE A BREAK PEOPLE!!! And the fact this one dumb ship uses the 9th chevon is just really lame.
Ugh. I really wanted to see the franchise take a rest for a bit, but so much for that plan. I'm surprised that no-one has pointed out that this premise sounds very similar to Space: 1999 - Our Heroes are stuck onboard a ship/Moon that periodically passes by inhabited planets, but cannot make any long-term vists, and are (theoretically) searching for a way to get back to Earth. It could be interesting, but considering how poor the last two seasons of Atlantis were, and how quickly Atlantis's original premise was jettisoned, I just don't have much faith in the execution.
Am glad there will be SG on in 2009 but I do believe new writers should be brought in. I refuse to compare it to VOYAGER until I see it though I would love it to have the best of BSG and early VOY with the tone of a SG show.... but thats asking too much. So I guess 5 seasons for SGU
I doubt very much that SGU will last 5 years, I give it 2. Then Wright, Cooper and Mallozi can get lost.
I thought MGM canceled Atlantis so they could use their operating budget for Universe. I thought I read where SciFi wanted to renew it, but MGM didn't offer it. Or was that fan speculation?
^^ Just fan speculation as far as I know, but it seems reasonable. I really, really don't know about this show. Atlantis was more dramatic, tense, and interesting when it was cut off from Earth, but the writers clearly didn't know what to do with that premise, so they killed it after only a season. The show hasn't been nearly as good since. How long will it take them to jettison the idea on Universe? And who will be part of the cast? Will they port over a guest star from Atlantis or SG-1 (a la McKay and Weir), or try and go in a totally new direction? And will every planet in this distant (and getting even more distant every episode) include the Renaissance Fair and pine trees? Will the people speak English? Will they be human? And how will they be able to string together continuing story-lines when every first meeting is essentially the last? It all sounds like Stargate: Voyager to me, and Stargate has already been under a serious brain drain for 4 years. I'm very cautious about this new series.
My picks are either Zalenka or Keller(they are going for a younger vibe) nah five years at most or four if your Enterprise jeez they couldn't wait a month to announce this but a mere two days after canceling atlantis The "younger vibe had me thinking of this scene from "200" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwyIMzfzz8o Sad enough they even ape that and then go ahead and do it.
Who wants to bet that the team will meet a strong warrior type alien like Tealc or Ronon who will join the team because he is ostracized from his community?
Or the warrior has nothing left back on his planet(probably the first stop in premiere) There will be a brilliant scientist probably geeky at first then later on can carry a p90 Smartass leader
Not too keen on the premise or that its said to be aimed at a "younger audience". Is it going to be like that clip in the ep "200" with them young kids on there phones and such?
Wait, where does it say its skewered towards a younger audience? Stargate already is geared towards teens and adolescents, more or less.
^ http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080822/tv_nm/stargate_dc_1 as I pointed out above it makes me think of the stargate 200 spoof with teen sg-1
