BSG didn't, though the actors seemed to be humming the Hendrix version, which didn't go with the source music in the final production.
Very good original version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu0LBldIlts White hot, stellar, never to be beaten cover version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvBCmY7wAAU&feature=related
I may catch some shit for these, but I like Pantera's cover of "Planet Caravan" or Sabbath's version, I know, heresy. Van Halen's "You Really Got Me" over The Kinks RATM's "How Could I Just Kill A Man" over Cyprus Hill Foo Fighter's "Down In The Park" and Fear Factory's "Cars" I was just never a fan of Gary Newman's voice. Ok, here's the big one, I love Blue Oyster Cult, but, Metallica truly owned Astronomy. And I'm sorry, but seriously, GnR's version of Sympathy? I was just cringing at it the other day when they played it on the radio, even Slash is on the record saying "This is the sound of the band ending."
Ellen Foley's cover of "Stupid Girl" was superior to the Stones. I'll probably be burned at the stake for this, but who cares: With the exception of "Hurricane", I prefer pretty much any Dylan song as performed by anyone other than him.
"Supernaut" by 1000 Homo DJs (a Ministry side-project). Better than the original by Black Sabbath. The legendary banned version of "Physical" by the Revolting Cocks (another Ministry side project). Better than Olivia Newton-John's original. The Sisters of Mercy did a terrific cover of "Gimme Shelter." I'm not sure if it was better than the original, but it was very, very good. And an obscure German punk/metal/hip-hop/reggae group called the Freaky Fukin Weirdoz does a great cover of Gene Vincent's "Be-Bop-A-Lula."
I'm not a fan of Jeff Buckley at all. In fact, I don't get what people see in him. If he hadn't died young but instead had simply quit the music business to go be a tailor in Bolivia, I don't think his music would be anywhere near as well remembered. That said, his cover of "Hallielujah" is brilliant. Here's another great cover: The Dickies - Nights In White Satin. I'm a huge Moodies fan but The Dickies take 5 minutes of overblown pomp and distill it down to 2 minutes of shrieking piss and vinegar.
Just looked up the Travis version on Youtube, thanks for mentioning that I like it My contribution: "Breaking the Law" and "Walk this Way" by Hayseed Dixie. Neither "classic" song I can stand in their more popular versions, but this country-version-of-AC/DC band make them fun and good to listen to.
