Synopsis: Special Agent Dana Scully is partnered with Special Agent Fox Mulder to validate his work on a special project called The X-Files. While he is a believer in the paranormal, fuelled by a lost memory where his sister was abducted by aliens; she is a scientist and prefers to look for rational, logical explanations.

Rating: 8.9

My View: What a beginning for such an amazing series this pilot is. Mulder is an interesting and solitary subject with an inmense desire for finding the truth. This involves going against the status quo and the people above him in the FBI (well and sometimes against agent Scully). Scully is the opposite of Mulder, she has to verify everythig and have evidence or else she won't believe in anyhting. What a great couple? I love it, they are the perfect combination. The ending scene in this episode is just incredible. One can only wonder what things lie in all those boxes at the pentagon.

I really enjoyed the pilot on DVD. I think the Mulder/Scully scene in the cabin perfectly captures how the two characters relate to each other. And I love the Raiders of the Lost Ark warehouse ending (and it's nice seeing that warehouse revisited in future episodes).

I'm sorry to have offended you. I didn't relise there was a thread to do with science fiction and from tomorrow I shall post these topics in those forums from now-on, I'd like to say sorry about that.

As for the actual title... well thats the name of the episode...

But I shall see about putting in "The X Files" in their somewhere.

I tried doing this on startrek.com and its not really gaining much of a response, its been a disaster actually. Hopefully I'll find some x-files fans around here, and I can continue these reviews because I love hearing what others have to say about these type of shows.

I'd always liked this episode since I first saw it, infact this was the first episode I saw, and I really got quite hooked onto the thing, its very addictive storytelling.

When I rewatched the pilot after seeing the original years ago, I was mainly struck by how fully formed Mulder and Scully's personas were right away. No ramp-up needed.

Funny, that's what I think whenever I see the name for this episode. I know WHY it's called "Pilot" and nothing else, but it still feels weird, given the cool, bizarre names many of the episodes have.

The end scene, with the pentagon warehouse, is still one of my favorite scenes of the entire series - visiting it twice in the first season pays off so nicely, when Mulder finally breaks into it, several years later.

I just watched the pilot today and I found it really solid. I didn't like the guess actors which hurts a show like "X-Files" because when you got two regulars they are usually very important to the success of a episode. The chemistry between Mulder and Scully though make the story work plus I liked the creepy scene were they loose time while driving in their car during rain and pull over next to that X painted on the cement that Mulder had put their earlier in the ep.

Also I got to say I really liked the aliens in the first season when they were more of a mystery and limited to being the more traditional greys from alien mytholgy. This ep played into more traditional concepts about aliens and alien abductions(well excpet the part of using comatose teenagers to do their dirty work for them).

I don't remember the pilot that well, despite having recently (last 18 months or so) finished a trawl through the entire seasons. I do remember though, thinking how young Gillian Anderson looked when I watched the show again, and as Temis points out above, the lead characters did seem well realised from the get-go.

What's even cooler is that it happens again, 9 years later and the "X" is still there!

I too loved the pilot...watched it when it originally aired and fell in love with the X-files from that moment. I never missed an ep
