VERY disappointed in the TOS Season Two remaster dvd set

Not only are the tops of the discs devoid of any labeling(they are blank silver), but of the 3 sets i've gone through so far all have been scratched, full of finger prints, and the disc platters have been broken on all of them.I'm bringing back my thrird set to Best Buy(AGAIN!), tomorrow and am going to speak to a manager about getting a refund.I DID want the set alot, but I refuse to spend $55 on a set that is supposably new but repeatedly has come in VERY poor condition. If they don't want to give me a new set, i'll make them keep opening sets until I find one that's in the condition new dvds should be in when you buy them, though I doubt such a set exists,if the three i've ha so far offer any indication of what to expect.

Paramount quality control obviously has gotten EXTREMELY poor if it even exists at the Mexican plant where these things are made.Whoever came up with the disc and package design also ought to be fired for using such cheap materials in a set they are asking so much for.Anyone thinking of buying this set, i reccommend you either buy one of the TOS non remastered dvd sets or hold off until Paramount hopefully redesigns the discs to have silk screening on the disc tops, otherwise you stand a pretty big chance of going through what I and quite a few others i have read about are going through with the horrible quality of these sets.

I was disappointed at the lack of disc art myself. I'm pleased it's not double sided, but the HD set was better, picture wise. However, I am happy they didn't put it out in Blu-Ray, since I'm not ready to commit to that format. Star Trek made my decision to choose HD, but at leasr HD was a LOT cheaper than Blu-Ray for the same picture.

The reccommended MSRP on this set is still $99(ALOT when you actually can find the first set HD-DVD/DVD for about $50 new online).I'll find out shortly how everything turns out when I go up to BB for set number 4.

Amazon has it for $60 - and since I have Amazon Prime, that MEANS $60..plus I'll get it by Wednesday.....:techman:

If you buy more than 10 movies/CDs and books a year, you'd be NUTS not to get Amazon Prime - FREE two day shipping - which in my area means ONE day about 50% of the time!

I have bought ZERO from Worst Buy the last three years, unless I get a gift card..

I'm a little confused by these 2 quotes. These are DVDs w/ content on one side, yet the other side doesn't have any graphics or title at all? That's weird. The second thing is what ssosmcin wrote: "...the HD set was better, picture wise..." I have the season 1 HD-DVD set, and because they're HD/DVD combo discs using both sides, there is no picture on the disc at all.

You realize HD-DVD is now a dead format; trotally abandonded by Toshiba and its other backers. If you want HD (1080P) picture quality, Blu-Ray is not it for disc media. Since TOS-R was supposedly made to make the series viable to continue in syndication as HDTVs penetrate farther into the cunsumer base; it's (imo) ridiculous that Paramount hasn't redone the TOS-R Season 1 sets in Blu-Ray format; and also ridiculous that they didn't release a Blu-Ray version of Season two and Season three; and have only announced standard DVD versions of these sets.

But again, as far as HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray; FYI - Blu-Ray won; and any HD (1080P) format discs for new films will only be in Blu-Ray format.

But they will. You know they will. They probably had other things in the HD-DVD production line, and retooling for Blu-Ray may be a slow process for a behemoth like CBS/Paramount.

I'm very confused by these seemingly contradictory statements.

LOL!

What format ARE you going to commit to? Black and white VHS?

As for high def, there IS no other disc format besides Blu-Ray!

DOH! - Did a bit of editing on the fly in the original and didn't read what I changed through totally (that's what happens when you post at work).

"Blu-Ray is not it for disc media" originally read something like:

"HD-DVD is not it for disc media, Blu-Ray is..." and I thought that was a bt long winded. Mea Culpa.

To clear up any confusion, the tops of the discs of the TOS second season remaster set do not have ANY type of graphic/silk screening at all(they are totally blank, except for the disc name and number in tiny lettering on the inside of the spindle as was done in the season 1 set).I went through ALL 8 sts my local Best Buy had and 2 sets at my local FYE and ALL the sets either had 1.extremely dirty/dusty discs with dust and/or fingerprints all over them 2.cases that were broken/broke in 2 as soon as you open them(including 2 that broke in 2 as soon as the Best Buy associate opened them)3. any number of discs that were full of scratches (a combination of scratches on both sides of the discs).Usually Best Buy doesn't usually refund the payment for dvd/dvd sets but once the store manager saw the quality of all 8 of the TOS season 2 remaster sets we had gone through, he had no problem refunding my money. He said he had never before seen such consistant poor quality used in any dvd or dvd set at any price point.

I've NEVER seen a set from ANY studio put together so cheaply with so many defects with such a large retail price as i've seen with the last two remaster sets.I suggest anyone still thinking of buying these sets either hold out for the eventual BlueRay editions, buy the original TOS nonremastered boxed sets, or dload the episodes off Amazon or XBL Video store instead. If you absolutely MUST buy the TOS remaster sesaon two set, MAKE SURE you open it at the store before you leave as you more than likely will also receive a set that's defective in some way.I've got suspicions these discs were repacked at some point and obviously with very little care. It's too bad because the remastered episodes themselves are EXCELLENT.It's painfully obvious that CBS/Paramount SERIOUSLY have been gettign worse and worse over the past few years regardign the quality and pricing of their Trek dvd sets. After this mess i'm hoping they fire whoever has been handling set/disc production for them, and select another entity that has FAR SUPERIOR quality control standards.

I'm afraid to ask these questions but I will:

1) - Kurgan, how did the discs play? Did you have any problems that way or were all of your objections cosmetic?

2) - Out of the 8 sets at Best Buy, could you have assembled one good one to keep?

Agreed! Since BR is now the only full HD format, Season 2 should have switched to this format.

Why?

Because those of us with regular DVD want to see the new CGI SPFX (especially internationally, where no non-US TV station has shown the new versions of TOS), and all those people who bought the DVD/HD Season One set would be screaming that they would have to buy a either a Blu-Ray player for Season Two and Three, or buy Season One again just to keep their set complete.

CBS is obviously doing all three new-CGI seasons for DVD first. Then, when they're ready, they might tweak the eps (or bonus features) again and do a Blu-Ray release - maybe after ST XI? I believe Paramount Home Video is planning a new all-10-movies set about then, too.

I likely could have pieced together a decent set out of the 8 copies that the BB associates and I went through(all the while hoping to find at least one decent set, but with no luck), but I really didn't feel like taking the chance considering even the cases were falling apart on some sets as soon as the plastic wrapping was removed.By that time I was disgusted and didn't want to spend my hard earned money on a set that was obviously of bad quality throughout it's production.Whoever is handling CBS/Paramount's Trek disc fabricating has some VERY serious quality control issues.Shipping a Trek set with an $80 MSRP the way they did is beyond disappointing.Even the plastic trays the discs were on were chipped in almost all of the sets.

I've written CBS Home Video a long email(with pictures of a few of the sets I took with my cell phone)expressing my disappointment and concern that whoever
was handling their Trek dvd fabricating obviously has very serious QC issues.Hopefully they'll look into it and do whatever it takes to correct the issues.I'd hate to see the eventual Bluray sets end up with poor quality as well.

BB provided customer service? Man, you must be living in an alternate universe.

Seriously, the disk condition sounds beyond questionable, more like outrageous. Then again, I remember seeing a 'collector's edition vhs' of TREK from Columbia House that looked like a double dupe when I played it against the same ep as it aired. So maybe the quality control has always been bad.

You and I are two different people. Back in the vinyl record days, when I'd return maybe a quarter of my records as noisy, warped or just bad, I'd regularly have to piece together two or three record sets to get one album that was good. SOP for me.
