Yeah...I'm used to "blog" and "bloggers". I'm not really sure why. Just some vernacular I picked up some time back. Old habits die hard.

This has been said before, and I'll say it again --just because the characters are true-to-the-period rascist, doesn't mean that Diane supported the internment camp thing. Just because she's white, doesn't mean she intended to give a rascist message.

Hey, Rush, I'm sure you haven't noticed it, but there are a whole slew of professional writers here on this board. Try to keep that in mind the next time you feel like lecturing here about how writers write.

This has been said before, and I'll say it again --just because the characters are true-to-the-period rascist, doesn't mean that Diane supported the internment camp thing. Just because she's white, doesn't mean she intended to give a rascist message.

Have you read the story? The way it's structured leaves it pretty clear that she's not trying to depict racist characters. Racism is built into the story from the ground up.

Of course, the Japanese, Germans, and Italians did far worse to their prisoners just before and during World War II, but still.

This would seem to be something similar to the Guantanamo Bay controversy. No comment.

Sigh all you wish, Rush. It won't change my opinion. Considering what I've read from her and about her, your first statement about her intentions doesn't convince me. Also, several other posters have given me reason to believe that ours is the more proper opinion concerning that novel. This is one of those times where we will have to agree to disagree. -- RR

Also, several other posters have given me reason to believe that ours is the more proper opinion concerning that novel.

Again, I agree to disagree. I'm sure you are aware, as I am, that truth is not necessarily determined by majority vote. Look at TOS. The majority seemed to not care for Star Trek until the 70's. TOS was a great show, nonetheless.

Also, prior to the civil rights movement, the majority had a serious racism problem. (Dramatized in the Crucible: McCoy novel)

And, no, I did not read the EL WWII story. I was simply playing devil's advocate, as it were. Trying to defend the other side. You understand.

If I ever do find a copy, in the store, of the EL anthology, and find in Carey's tale a truly intentional pro-rascist message, then I will be quick to announce my utter dissapointment (to put it mildly...) in her. But until that happens (if it happens), than I will continue to defend her.

Interesting points. Again, not convinced Carey isn't one of those people who's so pro-U.S. she is incapable of seeing the errors the U.S. has committed in its more than 230 years of existence. Ciao! -- RR
