MLB Chatter 2008

All I can say about last nights So.x game, is all the players came out with their A game on both sides, and Joba Chamberlain was excellent. However, the home plate umpire in that game was the WORST I have seen in years. It was absolutely disgusting to watch, for both sides.

Agreed. Home plate umpiring was atrocious. That said, how lovely that the Yankees have won 2 in a row at Fenway.

Maybe Sox fans can explain something about Manny. Early in the game he hit a fly ball into center field. It looked like an easy catch and it was. Thing is, Manny didn't even bother to trot to first base; he just stood at the plate and watched the ball being caught. But what if the ball had been bobbled - we've all seen botched easy plays. The announcer said Manny frequently does that.

I'm honestly not trashing your guy - I'm really curious. Doesn't he get some flack for doing that?

^ "Manny being Manny." I honestly don't know what goes on under the dreadlocks, but he can get away with many of those antics because he's good at what he does--but he never seems like a true "team player" to me. Ortiz, on the other hand, seems like a more grounded and all-around decent guy, and I like him more.

It seems like the last few Yanks/Sox games have had some really bad umpiring. Fortunately for the stripes, it's all gone in their favor. I guess George and Hank had those microchips implanted in the umps' brains after all. ;)

If I were the Sox, I woulda rushed the mound yesterday when Joba did his little Roger Clemons impersonation, but other then that Joba had a good start. I have a Red Sox coworker who practically cries everytime Joba does something good, because the Sox passed him up in the draft.

Yeah, I have no clue why Joba has it out for Youk, it is odd. Evidently Francona had to grab Josh Beckett and drag him back into the dugout cause he was ready to go give Joba a talking to.

On Manny, I usually like the guy, and he can produce, but I am starting to think it is time for a change. I would love to see Matt Holliday in LF either this year or next year, through a trade or something.

Yeah, these two games have been rough unfortunately. Hopefully Lester can give us a much needed win tomorrow. He has been the stopper this year.

So why did Manny just decide not to play on the 25th? He sat out the game against the Mariners because of his knee, then was supposed to start in the Yankees game but at the last minute told Francona that he wouldn't be playing. I caught bits and pieces of the commentators talking about it and they implied that Manny could have played (i.e. his knee had healed), but just didn't want to.

Well according to ESPN, the Sox have made it known that for the right deal, they would consider trading Manny. Can't say I am shocked at this point.

I heard that on Metsblog a couple of days ago along with Roy Holliday wanting to be moved as well. I`m pretty sure the Holliday one is bull, but I think I`ve heard that Manny wants to reunite with Pedro and I`ve been wanting to see him in a Met uniform since he was in Cleveland. As long as no player of any real talent goes to Philly or Atlanta, I will be a very happy camper.

Well actually, I was thinking about Atlanta. I would love for the Sox to somehow get Matt Holliday to patrol left for the next few years, but I could also deal with Mark Texiera at first, and moving Youk to left, he cant be any worse then Manny is defensively. Does anyone know Atlanta's outfield situation, I have not followed them closely this year.

Edit: After looking over Atlanta's outfield, good lord, they could use a power bat out there.

Well here's one for the funny papers.

Randy Johnson, who in his heyday was throwning 100+ MPH GAS, today chucked an EEPHUS pitch so slow that the radar gun at AT&T Park couldn't even pick up it's speed.

It was called a strike. :)

I saw a replay. That's one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Evidently before the pitch, a horn went off and he just lobbed one in that Lewis took as a strike. There was no emotion or anything afterwards. Great stuff. :guffaw:

After seeing his performance tonight against the Yankees, Jon Lester is quickly becoming one of the premire left handed pitchers in the game today...and it is fun to watch.

Yeah...Lester's definitely got the stuff. Nice to see Ortiz go yard and even have Ellsbury and Varitek hit decently. Hopefully the Sox can ride this momentum into what will be a tough series hosting the Halos.

Speaking of premire lefty pitchers, I was at big Shea last night as our lefty threw a complete game gem against the Cards, and my voice is shot. Nothing like seeing Beltran steal a homer in person, and too bad Phat Albert didn`t hit his shot to center as well, so Beltran could take that one away too. So far I got to see Johan in person twice and both times, he has been as advertised. The first in Philly on 7/4, when they shoulda threw him out in the 9th and yesterday. Of course it seems like every single game I go to this year it rains, but when my team has dominant pitching performances, I don`t notice the rain as badly.

Jon Lester pitched a terrific game against the Yanks last night. Sox's offense on top of game too. As for Sidney Ponson - oy. And he's (supposedly) starting Friday against the Angels. Shoot me now.

that's what you get when you pick a pitcher off of someone else's scrap heap and put him on the mound for a 200 million dollar team, I guess. Lucky to have gotten as good a performance as you have out of him, thus far. He sucks...

Actually the rumors I am hearing are CHAD TRACY for Mark Teixeira, not Conor Jackson for Mark Teixeira.

I don't think I like that one either, to be honest.

Dice K tonight. He's been on fire! Hopefully we can find a way to score some runs.

Or not. Dice K's stats are good only because he walks so many people--and that came back to burn him tonight. The bullpen will probably proceed to widen LA's lead.

At least it's looking like the Sox won't lose any more ground tonight in the AL East.
