MLB Chatter 2008

I do agree with you there, Johan is the ace, its his job to go out in the ninth in situations like this. Ironically, watching the game on Gameday, right as Sanchez loaded the bases, a little headline pops up above the game with, "Mets confident Sanchez can close." I just started laughing.

Whew! Hansen almost blew a three-run lead in the 12th to the Mariners, but got lucky. This guy's doing a great job of "bending it like Gagne." Time to let him go.

Buchholz was good but not great, but Masterson was excellent in relief. With Ortiz back in the lineup on Friday, maybe the Sox will snap out of their recent funk.

I'm starting to think that Micah Owings needs a vacation in Tucson to get his mind right.

We were still in the game up until he came in relief. :(

That trade the Brewers made to get Sabathia is beginning to look like the steal of the year so far. Last night he not only won his third straight game, but his third straight complete. When was the last time a started did that?

Last year. Brandon Webb had three straight complete game SHUTOUTS on August 5th, August 11th, and August 17th.

Sorry to "One-Up" you. ;)

Actually, I really wanted to know when it happened, because it doesn't occure very often.

That's true. It really is a big deal. I honestly don't know if any other starters have gone nine innings in three consecutive starts in recent years.

Heck these days it's tough for a starter to even go eight innings, and that's with a possible shutout in action!

With pitching having become more specialized, it's no surprise that complete games are going the way of the passenger pigeon. You have middle relievers, set-up men, closers... guys brought in to throw to one batter. Plus there is more science involved in studying pitch counts, etc. I think that was part of why Manuel pulled Santana before the 9th inning the other night.

Do you remember when Orel Hersheiser threw that record shutout inning streak? How many games was that spread over?

Well, in terms of fantasy, I'm glad he finally started to show Cy Young Stuff. Earlier, I was thinking how bad it was that I picked him up in the third round. Of course that could be said about the entire fantasy line-up but I guess patience, even though I'm last, is finally paying off.

Mets beat the Phillies today and the Phillies are back where they belong, in second place in their second rate city. Ollie and Heilman pitched well today and I can`t believe it but I really missed Billy Wagner. I`m actually happy to see him take the mound now instead of scared as I used to before Tues. Speaking of people I`m happy to see, Big Pelf is gonna take the mound tommorow against Cards and take over for Pedro Martinez who had to fly to the Dominican cause his father died. RIP to his dad and I hope he takes as much time as he needs. Somethings are more important then baseball.

Jeez, somebody takes these games way too personally. The Phillies offense is definitely slumping. We definitely squandered a good start by Moyer. Personally, game two bugs me far more than game three, since the Phils offense won't be in a slump next time they play the Mets, but Brett Myers might still suck at pitching.

Great game in Baltimore tonight.

Man, The Angels are leading a charmed life so far this year.

Let's hope they keep it up, shall we??

:techman:

I have no problem with that. The Angels play a style of ball focused on fundamentals, and I like that.

I will say one good thing about the Angels, I've always liked Mike Socia. I think he's one of the most underrated managers in the entire league.

All I can say about last nights Sox game, is all the players came out with their A game on both sides, and Joba Chamberlain was excellent. However, the home plate umpire in that game was the WORST I have seen in years. It was absolutely disgusting to watch, for both sides.

And a very inconsistent strike zone from the home plate ump today, though Wake's been off and the mid-relievers let the wheels fall off the wagon.
