Gosh. A massive attack by cybernetic-biological beings that leaves only a ragtag fleet of surviving vessels? I think I've seen this show already.

Seriously though, I can't imagine that would be the case. You can't manage a galactic entity the size of the Federation without starships to actually get between planets. Not to mention that it would kill any diversity in the post-NEM line-up, since all eleven of those starships would be continously pressed into service intra-Federation, to try and upkeep collapsing infrastructure or fend off incursions from neighbouring species who suddenly have the upper hand in terms of the balance of power. And we did the 'not enough starships' thing already in the Dominion War and post-Dominion War periods. Otherwise what was all that talk of doing 'exploration' storylines again, at least with ships like Titan?

That said, there might be a real big battle somewhere that leaves only eleven starships intact out of all the original combatants.

    Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

That's why I'm thinking it has to be a misquote (hopefully).

I bet it's not a misquote, just a reporter taking a facetious/hyperbolic answer far too literally.

After catching up on this thread, I am most definitely looking forward to the "Destiny" trilogy of novels.

Regarding the trilogy itself, I'm not surprised that the Borg Collective would now view the Federation as a bona fide threat to its continued existence, especially after the events of the "Voyager" series finale. Heh. It's no longer an option to attempt an assimilation of the Federation — it's proven itself to be far too dangerous, and must be obliterated, no matter the cost! Let's make the galaxy safe for all Borg-kind!

Most likely the Excalibur would survive as well.

True, I forgot about the Excalibur - and possibly the Trident too. So, that's possibly seven of eleven ships if those rumours are true, which they seemingly aren't completely.

The actual quote was "six starships," and it was one of my editors, Margaret Clark, making a joke. Lighten up, fer cryin' out loud.

Obviously she isn't a great joke teller, since the person writing the article didn't really seem to get that it was meant as a joke.

Data could tell that joke and it would be obvious to any thoughtful observer that it was facetious. Reporters are often so busy transcribing the answers to their questions that they don't stop to listen to them.

Yeah, and knowing that I'm not sure if it was a good decision by Margaret to tell this joke. Aren't there enough rumors and supposedly false informations about the trilogy out there already, without one of the editors adding to it in front of "the press"?

It's a given that inane rumors will propagate no matter how conscientious we are. If we avoided making wisecracks for fear that someone would misinterpret them, we'd have to give up humor altogether.

Besides, as reactions here demonstrated, most people could tell it wasn't true, because it's just so obviously absurd. Reporters don't always think about what they hear, but that's exactly why the public needs to think critically about what it hears and reads in the news.

Yes, shame on her for not being the 100% serious businesswoman while addressing a room full of Klingons.

The problem isn't with there being too many rumors. It's with there being 1000 times as many nitwits who immediately jump on the internet and cry "O NOES!!11! der wil bee unly !! ships OMGWTFBBQFUBAR!!" and then build the echo chamber up to a deafening volume for months before the books are even published.

Indeed. This happened in the regards to the John Barrowman/Captain America "news." I saw the story and believed it as fact until js (author Jill Sherwin for those who don't know), who was in attendance for that panel, pointed out that Barrowman was joking in response to the question.

How can Starfleet, and the Federation, survive with the fleet being decimated like this? The Dominion War wiped out hundreds of ships, Before Dishonor had an outrageous number "absorbed" by the supercube, and now Destiny comes along to destroy even more.

If there's going to be another long arc featuring one antagonist, will you tell us at the beginning? The Star Wars folks said that the New Jedi Order series would be about outside invasion and go on for 4-5 years and that Legacy of the Force would be about Jacen and go on for another few years. But with this Borg saga, info about each book was released one at a time, leading to the "Great, another Borg book" posts.

First of all, "decimated" is entirely the wrong word since more than one in ten ships will likely be destroyed.

Secondly, just wait for the damn books and read them. I think that after the Destiny trilogy and the aftermath books next year, we'll likely not see the Borg again. Just wait and read the books.

Hear, hear!! There's speculation and then there's hysteria. I think the discussion regarding this trilogy has, over its course, degenerated into hysteria territory on several occasions based upon rumour and half-truth.

I have to say, looking broadly at this thread, I feel a little sorry for David Mack, having to confront this kind of hysterical pressure about what will happen when all we have is two book covers and some half-finished synposes.

I just have one question - has David Mack let us down yet? (My answer is certainly no!)

Has Pocket Books done anything thus far to really screw up the Trek Universe, particularly in their last decade? (I can't think of any examples.) In fact, I think almost all of their major decisions have been pretty damn good - the Relaunches, The Lost Era, 'A Time To...', the trade paperbacks... He certainly hasn't let me down!

I, therefore, have faith in both Pocket Books and David Mack about Destiny. I don't have any reason to doubt them until I read the books. I may, then, be disappointed, since anything's possible, but I certainly won't get hysterical before I've read a single page.

this thread was hysterical as soon as it was started and the word 'Borg' came up...

    TBH, it's quite embarrassing...

I completely and totally agree with everything you've said here. That's the one problem with the internet, somebody says one little joke or makes an unscripted comment and everybody imediately assumes that it is completely true and starts having a collective freak out. I don't know how many times I've seen this with things like Lost or Heroes, and very very rarely do things turn out as bad as everyone assumes they will. Personally, I never take anything I read second hand on internet as completely true since things are almost always misunderstood in some way. The only time I ever actually take something as completely true is when it comes directly from the person involved.
