I don't believe that situation would arise, since if there were only MMPBs available, then presumably the ENT and NF books would have been worked into the schedule, so that we might only have one each of a couple of the things we have two each of.

    I'll agree with that.

Sorry I'm not falling all over myself praising every single aspect of the upcoming schedule. I didn't realize this was the sycophant thread.

they should do a book every 4 weeks not every calender month. then they'd get out 13 MMPBs a year...

Sorry I'm getting myself tied in knots here. I'm not criticising people for preferring one format or another, my own OCD will probably wind me up when the NF hardbacks don't line up, especially if it's in the smaller trade format used by Mirror Universe rather than the larger one used for No Limits and others.
And I don't want to be the guy who says "look we have it so good we shouldn't criticise at all" as that defeats the point of a message board.

Just that Pocket wants to do 12 and only 12 MMPB books per year. If we want more stuff, it has to be trades. And if we don't want more then something else would have to be dropped to fit it in.

I'd rather have the books, in any format, next year rather than have them in MMPB in 2011 and at the expense of Vanguard 8 or Titan 9.

The point being, Pocket definatly aren't going to put out more MMPBs. So it's not a choice between getting these books as trades or MMPBs. It's a choice between getting them as trades or just not getting them.

Interestingly the OED doesn't have it, But Chambers have some forms of it http://www.chambersharrap.co.uk/cha...ery=whinge&title=21st&sourceid=Mozilla-search
though it seems technically it should be whingeing.

thefreedictionary.com define it as "To complain or protest, especially in an annoying or persistent manner." and give the whinges plural form. They do note that it's chiefly British though which explains it. I had no idea I was being so obtuse, I'll be posting in cockney rhyming slang next...

Do we know that? There are plenty of times where a book really does work better as a TPB like the MyrU books or the MU books. Do you have any idea how huge those book would have been as MMBPs.
Personally, I'm glad that they are going to be starting to release more book in TPB size rather than HC. Yeah, Trades might not fit in with the other books in the series, but they're also $5-$10 cheaper, and if you ask me that pretty much trumps any other problems the format may have.

I always figured "whinge" was just the British version of "whine."

I'm a librarian - and I've never cracked a spine on a personal book yet.

Down Under in the PC-free 40s-70s almost any British-accented person we met was assumed to be "a whingeing Pom". Even if he or she was not particularly known for being a whinger or having a whinge. It was like a term of endearment. ;)

We Brits like to whine as well though. It's like how Eskimos have 50 words for snow.

This discussion has been interesting to follow but I'm with Deano2099 here in this one. I would rather have more Star Trek than less Star Trek and if more Star Trek means me buying TPB instead of MMPB then I am all for that!

I think Pocket has done an EXCELLENT job in selecting what titles should be in a TPB form thus far and I am sure that a LOT of thought has gone into what deserves a TPB release. We used to get two MMPB titles a month and the occasional hardcover and TPB titles thrown in. I am really impressed that Pocket is willing to "go out on a limb" and release so many TPB books next year! Would I like to so more hardcovers instead? You bet I would but that's my preference. I know that most people who prefer MMPB may have budget problems that restrict them from investing in more expensive formats, and that is totally understandable but please do not force your own economical preference on the rest of us! I like TPBs and Hardcovers but I will buy whatever Pocket releases because I love Star Trek books, and also because I collect them. I apologize if this seems harsh or uncaring over other people's plights or financial conditions but that's how I feel.

I will say however...I am a little disappointed that the Crucible trilogy is coming out in hardcover after the fact because I would have been one of those who bought it in HC if it had originally been released that way. As it is Pocket will likely lose their very first HC sale from me on this title. I loved the McCoy entry but the other two....UGH!!!

Well, even we have more than two.

But I heard it was Inuit shades of white, not consistency of snow.

I'm with you. I started collecting in December 1979, when I first left teachers college and was facing four years of uncertainty as to when my permanent job offer would come, and when regular money would start flowing, but I scrimped and saved whatever I could and always seemed to find enough to feed my ST book buying/reading habit. (Mind you, my Bantam and Ballantine collection is mostly second hand).

Maybe the reason I chose never to own a car, or start a family, is why I continue to collect today. Because I can afford to, and because I was so busy collecting that I missed other "Sliding Doors" opportunities and did other things with my personal life.

I remember being in two minds when "Spock's World" came out. It was such a big deal! Most of the time ST hardcovers have pleased me by being better-than-average stories but now that I have almost one entire bookcase of only ST hardcovers and TPBs, with all the hundreds of MMPBs in several other shelving units, I often think about how much i could have saved had the hardcovers been MMPBs instead.

My relatives know never to try to buy a ST hardcover as a gift - mainly because I've already bought and read it - but I can see that these books are usually attempting to serve a different demographic to MMPB ST fiction.

^ Another issue is the highly synthetic nature of Inuktitut as a language. Those different permutations for types or shades of snow are small morphemes which are then agglomerated into larger words, which will sometimes be the equivalent of a sentence in terms of the information it packs (like an extreme form of German, I suppose). Because you can create all kinds of words usign a number of smaller parts, those who didn't understand the way Inuktitut works thought there was a bewildering array of terms designating snow, when it fact there was a more conventional amount arranged in different ways and combined with different descriptors into single 'words'.
