E3 2008 - Discuss!

Wow, that was the Big Three's E3 conference?

Really?

Well, Microsoft certainly fared the best with FF XIII and the Xbox Live enhancements but Nintendo and Sony were just outright disappointing. I don't have a PS3 but it's still exciting to see new games coming out. This was the first year I didn't watch the presentations (just read the summaries) and I'm glad I didn't... ouch.

Of course we've all known E3 has been headed this way for some time now and as someone already said upthread many companies have their own events now (Nintendo and the Tokyo Game Show, etc.) My guess would be that they're probably holding off on bigger announcements for 2009 and beyond away from E3 as it seems it has nothing but a horrid stigma attached to it. I've been reading left and right that this may prove to be the last E3 and I can certainly see why.

Oh, I almost forgot. What did people think of Sony's President making that comment about Jack Palance being dead and him being alive? It was very awkward. I thought I heard some people in the crowd boo at it.

Classless and lame. Some of the minute-by-minute reports mentioned uncomfortable silence and booing as well.

That's gotta be a joke. I'm sure there are pinheads out there who actually think that way, but the video is just too over the top to be real.

Ah! I love the goons at SomethingAwful. Maybe I can talk one of 'em into doing a similar video mocking the NMA whackos...

Fallout 3 was the only thing from e3 that even remotely interested me. Even that I'm a little skeptical about. I'm not sure how the hybrid fps, tactical shooter thing is going to work out in the end. The really specific area based damage could be fun if it's in the game for anything more than looks. Like being able to blow a guys leg off to facilitate an interrogation or shooting off a guys hand to use in a palm print scanner or something along those lines. If it's just high tech gibbing, then I'm not caring as much.

Everybody's watching online, eh? G4 has a bunch of live coverage this week, so I just set the DVR to record it all. Watch it as I have time and FF through anything I'm bored with.

Loved the Monday Microsoft presentation. Looks like some pretty sweet stuff coming.

:guffaw:

Yeah, the Nintendo one was a waste of time to watch. I should have known it when the best way they thought of to start the thing off with was the vice president of us sales talking about falling and breaking her wrist which she conveniently had a picture of. I mean who takes a picture of a woman lying in the snow with a broken wrist.

Was that drummer a famous drummer from some band?

The Nintendo conference was on at about 2am E. Australian time. I went to bed at 11:30 and set my alarm for 1:50. I hit the snooze button twice and finall got up at about 2:20am. I went to IGN's Livewire broadcast, saw Iwata-san dribbling on about his sales figures, then went to bed. Apparently I didn't miss much.

What I don't understand is this WiiWaggle Plus thingy. I mean, I know it's going to be as half-baked and generally crap as the Wiimote itself, but I thought they'd at least try and make it a big deal. Instead, all they show is WiiSports 2? It's like the N64 RAM expansion cart all over again.

Yeah their new vice president was not someone to focus on during the press conference. Her stories about her broken wrist, how much her kid loves her because she works for Nintendo and how cute the puppy is in the Frisbee toss minigame have no place when your audience is gaming press and hardcore gamers.

Anyone catch the interview with Reggie on G4 after the press conference? When asked where the hardcore games were he said they had Animal Crossing (basically confirmed for months and at best a casual/hardcore hybrid title) and Grand Theft Auto for the DS (which we only saw the logo of). Sadly Reggie did not kick ass and take names at E3 this year. :(:scream:

I'm wondering why he gives a shit, he doesn't have a current gen console, and he seems to think sequel=the same game.

For most part they are, and I care because I live in a free world where I like keeping track of games. I haven't bought any of the consoles this gen (thank god) because yet again they show me that none of them are worth it and they rather just retread the same ground.
Fallout 3 is a totally different type of game to the other Fallout games. A lot of sequels build on previous games, so usually aren't the same game, only cash-ins and shovel-ware tends to be the same game again and again.

And you can't honestly argue, with what we know about Fable 2, that it will be "the same" as its predecessor. For a start, they've removed fences. And death.

Personally, I think this is the best generation in a long time. Tons of worthwhile games.

Agreed 100%. This year alone has already been fantastic, and the run up to christmas is going to be even better.

But I guess since you haven't played any, you wouldn't know.

He clearly enjoys spraffing about that of which he knows bugger all, as evidenced by his "Final Fantasy is up to 20" (it isn't) "and they never add anything new" (apart from a completely new universe, characters and battle system almost every time...)

He love spraffing about anything though seriously if he has no intention of getting a next gen console, why the hell come into an E3 thread.:wtf:
