E3 2008 - Discuss!

I really wasn't impressed with the Fallout 3 presentation. It felt like Oblivion with guns, and that doesn't strike me as a good thing.

I hope their talk about making the world more "alive" is more than lip service. Random NPCs walking around saying the same lines of dialog to each other isn't exactly the most exciting thing in the world.

The Fallout 3 footage looked fucking awesome.

Fable 2 finally gets confirmed for October - I may cry. And that "purple orb representing your friends" thing is all kinds of brilliance. Seriously, that's one of the best lobby-less mp ideas I've ever seen. Actually I think it's the only one.

Molyneux, you've actually done it.

Also - FFXIII on 360?

What?

What?

WHAT?!?!??!?

FUCKING YAS. Square Enix just saved me £300 quid, and screwed Sony in the process.

AWESOME.

This has been a VERY good night. :D

I did my own little liveblog of the Microsoft conference. Fun times.

Fallout 3... oh god, Fallout 3! This could be the Game of Show right off the bat unless we see something pretty huge tomorrow. As an old-school Fallout fanatic and a gamer in general, this has probably become my most anticipated game for 2008. Can't wait to see the whackos at NMA go ballistic over this. :D

I wonder what kind of grounds Square and Sony are on at the moment. Heh. Guess all the Sony/Square Axis fanboys out there know what it's like now to lose the exclusivity, maybe not as badly as the Nintendo fanboys back in the day, but damn. That's gotta hurt. I love it!

Oh dear god.

I prefer the blades.

From majornelson.com:

Major Nelson said:
Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.

Best of both worlds--I get a spiffy new interface and you keep your blades. :D

i was also impressed by the orb thing until i gave it a bit more thought. sure in an e3 demo, all the 'friends' will be in roughly the same area that happens to be right next to you... however, i'm assuming that the orbs move and update based on your friends positions...

i figure in the real world, the feature won't be very handy beyond the first week the game is out. friends will wander off to various chunks of the world and you wont be there, so you can't invite them, except for using the old fashion way (which isnt bad, and may be quicker if you dont want to search for the exact purple orb of your friend).

now maybe they have a map that will show you where all your friend orbs are at, and then you can fast travel or warp to the position to invite them to your game (hoping that they aren't in the process of warping to your spot to invite you)...

again, this assumes everyone is playing at the same time...

and i'm assuming that the orbs are showing your friends as they play fable. but it could just be the orbs represent your friends online (in any game). they dont update, they are in your town, or always near you (essentially it's a more game oriented friends list). if thats the case, it doesnt seem any more special than hitting the guide button and sending a game invite to a friend.

Well, doesn't every form of Co-op play? :vulcan:

Thing is, I can arrange to play with someone outside the game, and we don't have to dick around with lobbies or invites or any of that nonsense. Just be in Bowerstone at 8, I'll go into your world. Boom. Done!

And, although I guess the likelyhood would be diminished in the real world, I love the possibility for random encounters with your mates. I might not be planning to do any co-op, but hey, if I run into a friendly purple orb and they say "dude, geez a hand wie this boss, ya prick" - ahahahhaha I love it.

The more I think about it, the more fantastic an idea it seems. YMMV.

No, that's definitely not the impression I got from what he said. Also, the orbs were moving independently of his character.

According to Eurogamer's hands-on...

These look a little like pearls, and move politely about the world of Fable 2 as if minding their own business. And they are minding their own business: every orb you encounter is somebody on your friends list who's independently playing through the game. The orb shows their position, allows you to chat, gift them items, compare stats, and even boot them out of your world. It also allows you to invite them in to join you properly.

So it doesn't seem like an orb represents someone on your friends list playing Halo 3. They have to be playing Fable, and it sounds as though the orbs approximate their position in the game world.

I think all the momentum Sony built up with BR winning just went out the window with FXIII.

And the Netflix thing sounds awesome. I might have to get a larger HD now.

that is my point, you are already going to have to make arrangements to meet up with people. i guess getting rid of a lobby is nice, but to me, it's not that impressive. it eliminates a couple of screens... and may save time (assuming there is a quick travel method). if there isn't a quick travel method, a lobby would be faster if the person is far enough away (think getting together with someone in an mmo and not having people that can summon)

its certainly nice, but again, i'd say that in the real world, a random run in with a friend, in your immediate area is going to be pretty tough beyond the first week the game launches.

hopefully they've taken steps to limit the amount of griefing a friend can do to your game (or you do to their game). i'm also curious if your friend can pop in and dump gold and items on you...

i'm curious about the game, but it certainly didnt blow me away

Nintendo has announced the Wii MotionPlus accessory. It will plug into the bottom of the Wiimote and provide more accurate motion controls, including 1:1 motion controls. I can't wait to see what Nintendo shows off using this new accessory tomorrow.

My favorite part of the Microsoft conference was Resident Evil 5. The co-op looks like it's going to work really well.

The avatars look okay, though I wonder if people will be able to make a bunch of them like you can with Miis. Right now I have at least 50 Miis and I love seeing them in games like Mario Kart.

I also like the Hard Drive install, I may have to upgrade my 20 GB hard drive.

I, on the other hand, think an Oblivion with guns set in the Fallout world would be awesome.

Agreed, Oblivion's been my game of the generation so far, so I'm willing to buy Bethesda's next sight unseen.

FFXIII on 360? Complete megaton, absolutely did not see that one coming. Probably the best conference MS could have had.

Same here. Oblivion gets alot of flak, and I'm not blind to its flaws, but it continues to impress. It's probably the most ambitious and immersive game I've ever played.

If Fallout 3's gonna be Oblivion with guns, well, that's just fucking good for Fallout 3. :D

I suppose I just don't see that as any kind of issue.

Not just that. It acts as a portal into someone else's version of the game world. I wanted GTA to do something like this, seamless multiplayer/single player, but alas they went with a more traditional route (and fucked it up imho).

With a game world as "dynamic" as Molyneux promises (we'll wait and see), that adds a whole other dimension to Fable 2's co-op. If it's true that everyone's world will be at least slightly different, then that's awesome.

Wasn't this what Crackdown promised, but never actually delivered on?

I never followed the hype for Crackdown.

Although I did pick it up, it became little more than a pleasant distraction until GTA4 hit. By the time I got round to playing it there was nobody on LIVE to do co-op with :(.

Silly game anyway. I didn't like how it completely did away with any kind of coherent plot. I can see what they were trying to do but it failed to grip me for that very reason.
