Who is the competition?

ancient

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I'm trying to think what 'blockbuster' movies are supposed to be coming out next May/June. But I can't think of anyone else coming out that early.

So, who does Trek XI have to beat, if anyone? Is there any competition at all?

5/1/09
The Hannah Montana Movie
X-Men Origins: Wolverine

5/8
Star Trek

5/15
Angels & Demons (DaVinci Code Sequel)

5/22
Night at the Museum 2
Terminator Salvation 4

Trek is in good shape as it has a weekend to itself. There is no such thing as getting two weekends without a big movie during the summer.

The only ones that I have heard of are the Wolverine prequel to the X-Men films and Angels and Demons, the prequel to The Da Vinci Code.

The Hannah Montana movie concerns me the most, but I have hopes we can weather that storm...

Honestly, I could see that movie actually making a lot of money. But it's at least a different audience, so it won't hurt Trek. Wolverine would have slightly more of an impact, so we'll have to see about that one. If that's really all the movies coming out, Trek will have a decent shot of doing well.

isnt there some chance both are going to be delayed due to how long it took to get restarted due to the writers strike.

Trek looks pretty well positioned.

As for "Wolverine..." the luster is off of that franchise and while the movie may do very well it's not likely a giant killer.

Wolverine will provide some competition, but Trek is likely the biggest movie of May. XMen 3 had a 67% dropoff for its second weekend, which is pretty big...and lost out to a comedy (The Breakup).

It is still likely Trek will only get one #1 weekend with the DaVinci sequel. However that is pretty common. Last summer's Transformers made over 700 mil world wide and had only one #1 weekend for example. Sometimes you get lucky like with Iron Man. The buzz on Speed Racer was so bad that it didn't provide competition. Proving that the quality of the film is probably the biggest variable.

So lets hope that the Angels and Demons looks like crap!

I'm sorry but my obsessive compulsive nature got the better of me and i had to fix this:

1/5/09
The Hannah Montana Movie
X-Men Origins: Wolverine

8/5
Star Trek

15/5
Angels & Demons (DaVinci Code Sequel)
Bruno

22/5
Night at the Museum 2
Terminator Salvation 4

Much better.

^ those dates are unlikely to even apply in Britain, you realise that? ;)

I can only see X-Men Origins being competition of those movies, the rest don't stray much, or at all, into Trek's genre. And I don't see it being that much competition. I wish it was coming out after though, if its lame, which it almsot certainly will be, might put people out of the movie going mood the next weekend.

He did say something about "obsessive compulsive nature", though. ;)

I didn't check the other titles, but the date for Star Trek at least seems to be correct.
